What Are You Doing To Promote The EF?

Our FSSP parish just received approval from our Archbishop to have a quarterly collection in support of our seminarians. We had our first collection Sunday-a wonderful way to support future provision of the EF.
May God bless our seminarians, our priests and our Archbishop. Amen.

He is saying that the Forms are not the same and this goes beyond mere superficialities. That is all.
I think that you are reading too much into it. He said that they are different and that you cannot vest one form to make it look like the other form. I think that he is quite correct about that and I am quite sure that it is why we are going to have a new form sometime in the future. Would you say that a form of the Divine Liturgy is superior or inferior to the OF/EF or that they are just different and no matter what you cannot pass a DL as an OF or EF Mass.
Thank you both. :tiphat: You’ve got it in one. 🙂

Definitely a good thing to promote.
Promote is what I do at work to make money. :hammering:

When we sing, I pray the Holy Spirit uses our prayer to open the ears and hearts of people at Mass and draws them back for more. 😃

Sounds nice, but everyone promotes on some level. Church websites… promotion. Church bulletins… promotion. Announcements… promotion.

And promotion can be used to evangelize. To go back to the topic of the OP, since the Latin Mass does appeal to some people, promoting it can also be the vehicle by which some who have left the Church, return.

this is a whole other discussion, I will just say I agree, sort of.

I am still wondering, if the difference goes beyond the form, what are those differences?
Readings, proper prayers to a large extent, proper antiphons to a lesser extent, EF has few options while OF has an enormous amount, EF rubrics are quite minute and specific while OF rubrics are very general and non-specific*, language permissiveness, lots of ritual action in the EF with comparatively little in the OF, etc.

*To explain further: I believe the EF assumes the celebrant priest has very little quality education in liturgy and so, as a sort of insurance policy, has very minute and specific rubrics. The OF assumes the celebrant priest has a lot of quality liturgical education and a deep understanding of Roman tradition, and so allows the priest more latitude under the auspices of assuming that he will make good liturgical decisions on his own. I think the post-VII assumption was that priests would receive more quality liturgical formation than before, which was, I think, a decently reasonable assumption. However, we know from common experience that this did not happen.

I’m jusy asking him to be specific if he can.
The reason you never see a real discussion of the differences (i.e. beyond superficial things like Latin vs vernacular) is because it’s not allowed here. For real answers, look elsewhere. Read the Ottaviani Intervention, for example.

EDIT: back on topic, I also invite people when they visit my town, to come to Mass with us, and we provide them with a handmissal if they ask, or just explain how to participate in the EF Mass on the drive down, and let them absorb it.

I don’t want to take the thread off track, but I’d just like to briefly mention that a bit of caution should be attached to the recommendation of reading of the Ottaviani Intervention, as it was originally a letter written to the Pope which was organized by Archbishop Lefebvre. My understanding is that Cardinal Ottaviani later distanced himself from the letter. The letter has also been misused by some to promote a more extreme viewpoint, though I know that’s not your intenion here.

Anyway, it’s good of you to invite folks to attend the Mass with you - what better way to understand the EF than to have a veteran next to you to help out? Good idea. 🙂

The reason there is no real discussion is, there are no -subsantial- differences, just differences in form, which is why there is no reply to the rhetorical question I asked.

Anyone willing to give there opinions why the EF has been discontinued or is poorly attended in some parishes ? I have no personal experience in that area, but I imagine a pretty good guess would be, No choir, No plans to start a choir, Everyone right out the door after Mass.
