What do Jews think of the other Abrahamic religions?

I know, right! Time is flying faster every year. Remember when you were eight and next year took forever to arrive!

When I was a child I thought I would never live to be 15.

“It’s too faaarr.”

I know! High school took FOREVER…it was four years! The years speed by so fast now, I’m amazed I haven’t been flung off the planet!

I remember how long the interval between Thanksgiving and Christmas used to feel. It always took forever! But now it just flies by! Now it’s New Year’s! In a blink of an eye it will be Easter again.

Well, Abraham came out of Sumer and I remember reading that a remarkable proportion of Sumerian artefacts turn out to be the equivalent of shop accounts
Well, if they indeed settled down so that they could raise barley for beer, as some now theorize . . . you’ve got to have written accounts for when people enjoy too much product 😜 😱 🤣

In response to the “on the one hand…” post. Is it, then, more of a legal system, rather than a religion?

I suppose I was reflecting on what I saw as the difference between my experience of my late-teens to early 30s and that of my daughters (now in their 20s) who have always seemed a bit “ho-hum” about it and the fact that few people I know seem to have New Year’s Eve parties or go to them. On the other hand, moving to outer-outer, quasi rural suburbia means life is quite a bit less ‘immediate’ than it used to be.

Not that I was a great party-goer, I love a glass of wine, I love two glasses of wine, then I fall asleep.

I assume most of them don’t… very much. But what do I know?

Not that Judaism has Law but Judaism is Law? In a sense, yes.

As @Pattylt said earlier, what Jews argue about is ‘observance’, Judaism’s focus is on correct behaviour and whether an action is ethical rather than whether we’re believing something correctly.

(Over-simplifying a lot for effect) God gave us ‘the Law’ (Torah) and told us to get on with it, then people came along to tell us - usually - how we were doing everything wrong (prophets), we also picked up some extra pointers to how to live life (the writings - psalms, proverbs, etc).

And we’ve carried-on, carrying-on.

Thus, very similar to Islam with it’s Sharia law. Except that the Muslims believe in and worship God (Allah).

I don’t know if we have any actual religious Jews on the forum. Do we? I think we have a few ethnically Jewish folks here.

I know secular Jews don’t care much about it, they are just against religion in general, including Judaism. As for Orthodox Jews, it seems to differ. I know some are very much against Christianity and the Talmud supposedly says some very nasty things about Jesus and Mary. Other religious Jews tend not to talk about Christianity as much, if ever, preferring to focus on their own religion.

I used to think so too, but the Talmud actually barely mentions Jesus and never Mary. It’s just rabbis debating halakha or Jewish Law.

I was a very religious Jew. You are right that there are some Jews that aren’t at all pleased with Christianity just as you will find Christians that aren’t at all pleased with Jews. It’s not a tenet of the faith and we are not supposed to hate anyone and ask for Gods forgiveness when we do!

I might add that if you enter a Synagogue, you will often find people praying, talking and even arguing with God. Many Jews have a very upfront and personal relationship with Him. Piety exists in Judaism every bit as much as Christianity. Don’t ever mistake the focus on the obedience of the law as meaning Jews don’t worship God. It’s very much both.

Finally, I want to add that I have not read the Talmud…just bits and pieces. I’ve heard accusations of some very condemning commentary in it. I’ve never personally seen it but, the Talmud is commentary and opinion on thousands of issues with hundreds of opinions…often disagreeing with other opinions. I’ve also read some horrible homilies against Jews from ancient Catholic priests and leaders. I understand the times and context they came from. There was horrible animosity between the two faiths for too many years. We have all matured from then to now. If anyone knows of these horrible comments in the Talmud, I’d like to know as all I’ve ever heard are the accusations, not the evidence. Thanks!

Well, I’m a blue-eyed blonde but as soon as I arrive at an Italian airport, everybody assumes I can talk rapid Italian - which is (partly) because I really do just look like lots of other (northern) Italian women. Unfortunately, I only speak and understand Italian at moderate pace - that may be because, well, I’m a blonde with blue eyes. (all this ethnical stuff gets a bit difficult).

On the other hand, in my 13 years here, find one post inside the timezone of any shabbat or any feast, you won’t.

If you’re not careful, I might start making assumptions about your name and your view of Jews.

Don’t worry, I’m much more experienced than that.

I am really not sure how your responses relate to the parts of my message you have quoted.

I do get the impression that you are purposefully being vague though.

Anyhow, it seems your last comment was about how my name (being Polish) makes me anti-semitic?What that has to do with anything I wrote though, as I said, I have no clue.
