Atheism is indeed the assertion of the abscence of a diety. Religion however, is how one explains the origin and purpose of the universe, and indeed life itself. Since everyone has some sort of belief about how the world came into being, and why it exists in the first place, then everyone has a religion. It is the answer to the ultimate “Why?” Now most people take this a step further and codify these beliefs into denominational groups. Christians have a certain set of beliefs, buddist another, Hindus, yet another. While atheism may be the most free ranging of these belief subsets, there still are some common tenets of atheist that could cause them to be consolidated into a group of believers with a common set of ideals. Hence, atheism is a religion, and one that is usually defended more rigorously than most other religious subsets.

You cannot be an objectively moral person if you reject God, as you have also rejected the objective standard by which morality is judged. In the old covenant, which was a material, physical one, disobedience to the will of God (the Law), had immediate, physical consequences which were spelled out in the Law. The new covenant is a spiritual one. Violating this covenant doesn’t have immediate physical consequences. The consequences are spiritual and eternal. But since you reject all this, who cares.
