What do you think of the Pope's response to the current scandal?

You’re right. I sense he’s waiting for something, no idea why i have that hunch

Th man at the center of the homosexual scandal. He was sanctioned by Pope Benedict for his behavior towards seminarians.

Where did those come from? 🤔😐

I hope that he tells church leaders to release any and all document pertaining to accused priest sexually abusing others. The church will only start to heal once it is transparent on this issue.

what truth?

catch up man, we have archbishops on prison terms here for covering up child abuse.

its time your country started doing the same

all talk and no action or blaming the big man and ignoring the little people just isn’t cricket

I’m fine with the silence. Silence was Jesus’ response to his critics
This, combined with Christian charity, respect for the Vicar of Christ and the fact that the information we seek isn’t public knowledge, as well as the previous point about scandal seekers, makes me think silence is probably prudent at this time.
Any statement he’d put out right now would likely be twisted and mangled to fit any number of agendas.
I don’t think there’s any doubt about that 😦
the victims,
Sexual abuse (cynically and tragically) doesn’t surprise me. What surprises me is how people, eager to discredit this Pope and/or the Church, will turn on the victims if they don’t do things according to mob mentality. It’s…disturbing. It’s one big take away I’ve had, as well as the need to stick very closely and with vigilance to the reforms put in place.
Surely, the truth will not be silent forever.
Nor should it be. It will be revealed in it’s time and place.

Don’t be so quick to get in trouble by trolling. There are a lot of very nice people here. So, I encourage you to take a deep breath, be calm and stay. 😎

The transparency you mention is a foundational principal when it comes to fighting abuse and protecting children. In fact, emphasis on NOT remaining silent is always part of the programs adopted by dioceses to protect children. Here’s and example…

I didn’t realize the Pope was so distant from the affairs of his Episcopal Conferences as you describe. Since the highest juridical authority in the Catholic Church, which will be needed in matters as this, resides in the Apostolic Tribunal of the Roman Rota under oversight of the Holy Pontiff, perhaps the opposite of your claim is true. Indeed. For a global Church, this problem cannot be rightfully treated as merely a national matter.

You may not realize this, but only the Vatican has the power to apply canonical penalties to bishops. Episcopal conferences, such as the USCCB, have no such authority. No doubt, the USCCB is awaiting a response from the Vatican regarding the final disposition of certain bishops under accusation of wrongdoing.

By the way, if any Bishops (I’m doubtful) are in prison around the world for covering up the abuse children (as you claim), then that was accomplished by civil authority, not ecclesial authority. The Catholic Church no longer operates ecclesial prisons outside the Vatican.

So, as you see, I’m all caught up. 😎

I don’t know what to think. I feel as if shame is driving all sides and shame is the root of this scandal so it is only getting worse. Shame fuels the desire to cover up, hide, lie, and deny unpleasant realities. Shame clams people up so they don’t want to speak, but then that silence is also used to shame the other party. That’s why the “silent treatment” is so detrimental in relationships. Not “saying a single word” because “it would do you good” to uncover the filth yourself comes across as arrogant, not humble silence. It also comes across as buying time to possibly get rid of evidence. This is all so sad. I hope that God will reveal the truth because it seems He is the only one who will. I pray for Pope Francis. I don’t want him to resign. I do need answers and guidance though. Where is our Shepherd when we need him most?

I have no doubt the Shepherd will intervene with His Divine graces. We may see that quite soon. Though human beings fail us, God will not.

So - be humble and silent ?
That’s a good description of many Catholics today.
Glad Jesus wasn’t that - as he stood before all the Pharisees and Saducies -
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” 14 But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor. Matt. 2:12-14

What I don’t like about the Pope’s answer is that he is claiming silence but at the same time he is basically saying Vigano’s goal is to cause scandal. He is attacking and discrediting while claiming holy silence.

Now I think Vigano’s testimony reads like the wild shouting of a man who has snapped after having seen and heard too much. It may very well be a mix of truth, exaggeration and imaginings.

All the clergy and lay employees of the church that I have talked to see all these accusations as conceivable and are heartbroken. Silence just kills their faith in the bishops more.

I’m very conflicted about this. The faithful are tired of being left in the dark. I think he should tell the truth: 1) admit his fault and ask the Lord and victims for forgiveness, or 2) defend his innocence by denouncing Viganò’s allegations and praying for his enemies. We want an end to this culture of abuse and homosexuality that has plagued the Church for decades.

If he denied it, I don’t see people believing him anyways.

The sad thing is that here in my neck of the woods in Iowa, most non Catholics believe nothing the Catholic leadership including the Pope states as true.

We need to pray more than ever for our priests and a purging of the evil that has haunted this Church and for victims that were sexually abused at the hands of our clergy and victims of sexual abuse at the hands of anyone…

Lord, in your Mercy hear our prayer.

i described no such thing. do what we are doing, we have an archbishop on a prison term for covering up child abuse. and that is through the secular court system. we have priests in jail for child abuse. we have a cardinal going on trial for alleged child abuse.

we are not relying on the church to charge its own. we are doing it through the correct legal channels.

I am not claiming it, I am saying this is what we just did. google the Archbishop of Adelaide.

catch up! Its a legal matter, and should be treated as a legal matter. No one is above the law.
