Paul didn’t say you had to fill up anything. He was speaking of himself, and in respect to the ministry commissioned to him by Christ, not in respect to Christ’s work on the cross and salvation. This he states clearly is entered into only “by grace through faith…not as a result of works” (Eph. 2:8-9).
Yes, he does. Paul states:
1 Corinthians 11:1-2 "
Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and
keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you.
Why must we “obey Paul and
work out our salvation with fear and trembling?”(Philippians 2:12)
We cannot meet the Lord on Judgment Day with our hands and hearts empty and expect Him to save us. They must instead be full of good works/fruits in order for us to enter eternal life. We must do the will of His Father and His will is that we do the works that He has prepared for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
We were created in Christ Jesus (saved by Him through Baptism) in order for us to do the good works that His Father had prepared for us beforehand. If we do not do these good works which are the Father’s will for us to do, then we will not be saved. (Titus 3:8, Titus 3:14)
Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall
enter the
kingdom of heaven, but
he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”
Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you
present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and
perfect will of God.”
Why were we created? We were created to love God and our neighbors and to live with them in heaven for eternity.
Luke 10:25-28 "And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher,
what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “
What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” 27 So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 And He said to him, “
You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”
We
love God by obeying/keeping His commandments and producing good fruits. (1 John 5:3, 1 John 5:2, Titus 3:14)
We
love our neighbor by providing him with spiritual direction and providing for his physical needs such as shelter, food, clothing, and companionship. (1 John 4:21, Matthew 25:34-46)
“
But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?” Dead faith does not save us. “
You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.”(James 2)
James 2:22 “Do you see that
faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?”
Galatians 5:6 “For** in Christ Jesus** neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but
faith working through love.”
Matthew 7:19-20 “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20
Therefore by their fruits you will know them.”
Every person who does not bear good fruit is thrown into hellfire.
Revelation 3:14-16 “And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write,
‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “
I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then,** because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth**.”
Good works
prove that our Faith is a saving faith.
Hebrews 11:7 “By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”
If Noah only had
faith that God would save him from the deluge, but chose to not build the ark (his
work in obedience to God’s command,) then he and his household would not have been saved. It takes both faith and works in order to inherit eternal life.
First, we believe, and
then we obey.
Revelation 2:10 “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that
you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days.
Be faithful until death, and
I will give you the crown of life.”
2 John 1:8 “Look to yourselves,
that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.”
Revelation 22:12 “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me,
to give to every one according to his work.”
After our deaths, because we came to Jesus with our hands and hearts full of good works as proof of our love of Him, we pass the “test” of stewardship and He then approves us for our crowns of eternal life. (1 Corinthians 4:2, 1 Peter 4:10, James 1:12)
Matthew 25:21 “His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’”
