What in your opinion is specifically wrong with modern American Television?

It was funny in the way the office creep tells a filthy joke and you laugh nervously. And then ten minutes later you feel guilty for laughing.
Humor with no long lasting value.

A tree sloth is more motivated than Al Bundy.

His wife smoking while preparing a salad? Asking Al for sex, to which he replies: “Do we have to?”

What a miserable guy. Goes to work, hands out money. Sits on the couch and watches TV.

“It featured a dysfunctional family living in a fictional Chicago suburb.”

Just the kind of show that should be avoided by average people. The anti-role models.

Well never had an office creep so strike one. I found it great and will happily watch it in syndication.

So best to watch “The Vortex” and anything the Blaze puts out as quality role models.
 
Modern television is too broad a term. Some shows are decent some are not.

A lot of shows are a waste of time as they are so poorly made. Any show’s projection of reality can end up altering one’s projection of true reality. You just have to learn to be careful and balance your TV watching with other things.

I agree. I have missed a fair amount of modern TV. I have Hulu now to catch up though.

Very true. Our summertime viewing is sparse because we are out enjoying the weather or at some event or concert. At that time of year TV viewing is limited to local news.
 
The screens are too small and not bright enough, and don’t get me started on off-angle viewing.😉
 
My biggest problem with television: with the preponderance of reality tv and very graphically violent shows such as Gotham, there’s nothing much to watch.

I was very interested in the Amazon series “The Man in the High Castle” and watched a few episodes, but my interest waned. I tried watching “Mozart in the Jungle” but fell asleep on the couch (these days I find it hard to stay up much later than my kids’ bedtime).

How about that big lamp my wife must turn on that reflects right off the screen at the exact angle I am viewing.

That’s how I feel. Cutting off hands seems to be the new trend in “hero” shows. Not entertaining.

So TV is hit or miss for me. A “let me see for myself where it’s going” kind of thing. It stopped being “I’m so excited to see the next episode of this or that.” Today, it’s more like: “Oh, they’ve added a new bit of profanity or new bit of graphic violence or the hero just made a deal with a person only a notch or two above the devil.” Not to mention the totally gratuitous sexual scenes and scantily clad scenes.

Modern television rarely shows any good morals anymore. Sex, violence and other such things do not entertain me. Reality tv is just plain stupid.

I know! No TV in my house now, but I grew up watching TV so need mindless downtime sometimes. I discovered YouTube and watched all seasons of Route 66. Really liked it. Did all of Bonanza episodes a couple of years back and this past year have been seeing all the Rawhide shows. Seems like the early 60’s had some great shows. At least they tried to show the human condition in a realistic manner and incorporated moral and social values. Nothing like it now.

On the other hand, some reality shows like the ones where they redecorate or remodel homes and the one where they secretly take your junk car and turn it into a cream puff are kind of fun. I saw one where they were driving giant trucks on the Alcan highway, I think? Kind of strange but fun. And those ones where they haul themselves into the fancy bridal salon in New York to choose a dress are entertaining. I only see snippets of these reality shows when I am visiting someone who has a TV. That’s probably enough.
