Po18Guy,

I would answer your late questions and assertions, but they have all been answered many times in these threads about LDS beliefs. You have misstated many things in one short post. You show me that you do not read. It would be a waste of my time to answer you.

If others have questions, who have been willing to put in the brief amount of time to read, then I suppose I would answer if they asked sincerely. You will chide and chortle, but so what? You have exactly what you want in the truths you have. Keep those truths, and enjoy the light you have. Read the Book of Revelation again. It will answer your question about being a joint heir with Christ and receiving His grace to be “a ruler over many things.”

I did a google search on this, especially on the first question: “I am aware that your name is affixed to the testimony in the Book of Mormon that you saw the plates?”

The only places this is referenced is on LDS apologetic sites.
Would you expect it to be referenced on catholic.com? Or any other christian site? They tend to ignore it.

Here is another reference:

John Whitmer

by Elder B. H. Roberts

The fourth of the Eight Witnesses (See Book of Mormon Witnesses), John Whitmer, was twenty-seven years of age when he beheld the plates of the Nephite record. He was a young man of considerable promise, and upon the coming of Joseph Smith to his father’s house, became not only his enthusiastic friend, but rendered him considerable assistance in writing as the Prophet dictated the translation of the Book of Mormon. John Whitmer was Church Historian for a number of years; for a time editor of the Messenger and Advocate, the second periodical published by the Church (Kirtland, Ohio, 1834-1837). He was also prominent in the affairs of the Church in Missouri, being one of the assistant presidents of the Church, his brother David and William W. Phelps being the president and other assistant respectively. He endured the hardships incident to the persecutions of the Saints in that land. When settlements were being formed in the new county of Caldwell, John Whitmer was prominently connected with the land. purchases made. Indeed it was largely owing to some irregularities connected with the business, and some misunderstanding with the Prophet and other leading brethren in the Church, that finally resulted in his excommunication, in March, 1838.

After the expulsion of the Church from Missouri, in the winter of 1838-9, John Whitmer purchased the greater part of the townsite of Far West, which soon reverted to farming lands; and here John Whitmer continued to live, making farming his principal occupation, until his death in July, 1878. Though his relations with the Church were severed John Whitmer, up to the very close of his life, continued to bear witness that his testimony published in connection with the Book of Mormon was true. From it he never deviated. It was his testimony when living; it remains his testimony now that he is dead, unimpaired in its force by any word of his, though he was much offended at the Prophet Joseph, and for forty years had no standing in the Church. One can but regret the events which resulted in his severance from the Church, but one is compelled to admire his fidelity to the trust imposed in him by the Prophet when he made him a Witness for the existence of the Nephite record, in the presence of temptation to take a different course in the hour of his great darkness.

With these guys, you need to be short and sweet. They generally do not read nor care what you write, especially if it does not fit into their own self-imposed world view. I think that I handled them quite well in the few posts that I just posted and I did not waste much time. It is from my experience of at least a couple of years on this forum.

Jesus never appeared to anyone in the Americas as there were no great cities with people in them. He appeared at one time and at one point in history. The bible is proof of that. .
What does this verse mean to you?

And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Right on cue! You have read the standard Mormon manuscript reply to challenges to its teachings. See how the argument is twisted to make those with questions into the problem? When things get sticky, always insult the questioner and make them the problem. Thank you, brother!

Instead of just blowing the questions off, I would much rather that you respond to them. You apparently do not feel strongly enough about the LDS to stand and fight for it. Or, do you?

This is a flawed argument. The Catholic Church is very upfront in stating that it doesn’t believe in Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone). The Church is very upfront in stating that it accepts Sacred Scripture as well as Sacred Tradition.

I don’t believe there is a book that is published by the Catholic Church that states “this book contains the FULLNESS of the everlasting gospel”? I could be wrong…

However, when you compare teaching of the Catholic Faith (i.e. Sacred Tradition) that isn’t mentioned in the Bible to mormonism’s “continued revelation” you stand in error.
Sacred Tradition as accepted by the Catholic Church doesn’t = so called modern revelation.

There never was anything mentioned in Sacred Scripture or Tradition that says man can become a god. Nor does Sacred Scripture/Tradition state that man will populate worlds with his own spirit children, nor does it state that HF was once a man, nor does it state that HF had a god over him, and a god over that god, and a god over that god (ad nauseam)…etc.

These, unfortunately, are all modern revelations (i.e. fables invented by JS and/or his predecessors).
Thanks for taking the time to read and to respond to my post.

If your post is suppose to indicate how my position was flawed, I’m not seeing it. It appears that you have changed the subject matter. My comparison was not to equate “modern revelation” with Sacred Tradition. My comparison was used to illustrate that both religions have multiple sources of doctrine. Also, I illustrated that doctrine and gospel are not necessarily the same thing, just as dogma and doctrine are not necessarily the same thing. In short, I think you’ve committed the logical fallacy of missing the point. Please, let me try and put this another way.

Both Mormons and Catholics believe in multiple sources of doctrine. When speaking of the gospel of Jesus Christ, you aren’t necessarily speaking about all of the doctrines. This can be illustrated by looking at Catholicism. The Bible contains the gospel of Jesus Christ, according to Catholics, but it does not necessarily contain all of the doctrines of the Catholic church. All I am saying is that this same scenario exist when speaking about the Book of Mormon. It contains the *fullness of the gospel *of Jesus Christ, yet it does not contain all of the doctrines of the LDS church. All gospel is doctrine, but not all doctrine is gospel. The gospel is the “good news” of Jesus’ atonement. The Mormons understand the fullness of the gospel to be: 1. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. 2. Repentence. 3. Baptism for the remission of sins. 4. Receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost. 5. Enduring to the end. With this definition of the “gospel” it becomes clear that the Book of Mormon contains the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ, even though it does not contain all of the doctrines of the Mormon church.

You made the statement that the Catholic church is upfront about the fact that it has multiple sources of doctrine. If by this you are implying that the Mormon church doesn’t, then I simply don’t agree. First, it is no mystery that the Book of Mormon does not contain all Mormon doctrine. Further, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints makes it abundantly clear that we have different sources of doctrine. It is a major declaration of our religion that we believe in multiple sets of scripture and also in modern revelation. This is taught by the missionaries, it is posted on our website, it is declared in our Articles of Faith. I would almost say that if there is anything that people know about the Mormons, it is the fact that Mormons don’t just believe in the Bible, but they have other scriptures too.

As far as arguing points of doctrine, that wasn’t or is it my objective here. I understand that there are differences of beliefs between Catholicism and Mormonism. I respect your right to have and to live by those beliefs. My objective isn’t to say that your faith is wrong, but rather it is to help correct misunderstandings and misrepresentations made about my religion. 🙂

Kind Regards,
Finrock

To the extent that you continue to teach a false gospel you are in danger of God’s judgment. Whether that will take the form of an eternity in hell or a long time in purgatory is God’s decision, but you will fall under the judgment of God for teaching error.
Now of course, you are condemning my children to hell, right? And my two children, who are now young adults are wonderful christians attempting to live the word of god. So far, they are chaste, attempting to obey the other commandments and they pray often to their heavenly father. I would put them up to any catholic their own age…and even the nuns that have met them have said that I have wonderful daughters. But they are going to hell according to the catholic faith…and yet, catholics on this forum are stating that christ is love??

Try re-reading it, he didn’t condemn you or your daughters to hell.

Are you sure that you are not actually zerinus, or BDawg? Your snarky, cut and paste LDS response is almost word for word what they have posted when backed into a corner with no apparent answers. We are all waiting for LDS answers. This is Catholic Answers, so we have them.

Po18Guy,
I suppose that even though I answer such questions again and again, you want still another post to answer the same questions. I suppose it may be helpful to someone who happens along and doesn’t go back and read other posts, so here goes:
  1. God the Father was the Father of the baby Jesus, the Son of God, who was born of Mary, and Mary had conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost. Jesus was God the Son in the pre-mortal life, condescended to come to earth and suffer human pains and the infinite atonement in our behalf so we could receive mercy and His grace although we are sinful and continue to be imperfect. Both the Father and the Son have perfect love and are omnipotent. God the Father is the Supreme Ruler of the Universe.
  2. You asked, “So, how did “Jesus” condemn the “civilizations” in the new world, then? This contradicts your first paragraph. So, the LDS can have it both ways?”
I was asking questions to try and clarify what Catholic20064 had written and what Rebecca J had written in their posts addressed to me. The Book of Mormon spells out very clearly that when people have had their full and ample opportunity to repent and accept the Savior, and they fight against the Savior instead, then they are subject to being removed from the earth and sent to the spirit world, but this is only after they are “fully ripe in iniquity.” The Savior is very, very patient with people and their turning away from Him. But there comes a point in time when if a person has made their choice after being warned a hundred times or more in many different ways, then in due time they may suffer death and be brought to a place of accountability, and the Savior is in charge of knowing when that point in time needs to be.

Response
The critics’ attempt to argue that the witnesses only ‘saw’ the plates in a spiritual state, and then were allowed to heft a covered box. This flatly contradicts their own reports, and those of others.[1]

John Whitmer
Critics rely on one report from then-apostate John Whitmer and attempt to use this as the ‘smoking gun’ for a “visionary only” experience:

…all I know, you have published to the world that an angel did present those plates to Joseph Smith." Whitmer replied “I now say I handled those plates. there was fine engravings on both sides. I handled them.” and he described how they were hung and they were shown to me by a supernatural power. he acknowledged all. Turley asked him why the translation is not now true, & he said "I cannot read it, and I do not know whether it is true or not.[2]
So, the apostate Whitmer insists that he physically handled the plates, and attests to having seen fine engraving “on both sides.” The critics grasp at straws, and ignore the very clear implication that Whitmer (here a bitter enemy of Joseph Smith) claims to have actually seen and handled the plates. The “supernatural power” citation seems to be the imposition of the interviewers’ bias (it appears in none of Whitmer’s first person accounts or in the Testimony of the Eight Witnesses). It is also possible that Whitmer was insisting that Joseph Smith could not have showed him the plates without divine aid; this perspective is not present in any of his other statements, however. The Three witnesses likewise insisted on the physical reality of their experience with the angel, despite the supernatural trappings of their witness experience.

Why, then, did Whiter apostatize? He rationalized his choice to disbelieve the translation of the Book of Mormon (despite knowing that the plates were literal and physical) thusly:

I cannot read it, and I do not know whether it is true or not.[3]
Whitmer also published his witness to the plates:

I have most assuredly seen the plates from whence the Book of Mormon is translated, and that I have handled these plates.[4]
Richard Anderson has collected eight accounts of John Whitmer’s that confirm the reality of his handling of the plates.[5] The critics ignore much documentary evidence in Whitmer’s case alone, simply because his witness is inconvenient for their speculations.

Whitmer’s final interview is impressive:

I said: I am aware that your name is affixed to the testimony in the Book of Mormon, that you saw the plates? He–It is so, and that testimony is true. I–Did you handle the plates with your hands? He–I did so! I–Then they were a material substance? He–Yes, as material as anything can be. I–They were heavy to lift? He–Yes, and you know gold is a heavy metal, they were very heavy. I–How big were the leaves? He–So far as I recollect, 8 by 6 or 7 inches. I–Were the leaves thick? He–Yes, just so thick, that characters could be engraven on both sides. I–How were the leaves joined together? He–In three rings, each one in the shape of a D with the straight line towards the centre. . . . . I–Did you see them covered with a cloth? He–No. He handed them uncovered into our hands, and we turned the leaves sufficient to satisfy us.[6]
Lucy Mack Smith
Lucy Mack Smith wrote:

In a few days we were follow by Joseph and Oliver and the Whitmers who came to make us a visit and also to make some arrangements about getting the book printed soon after they came They all that is the male part of the company repaired to a little grove where it was customary for the family to offer up their secret prayers. as Joseph had been instructed that the plates would be carried there by one of the ancient Nephites. Here it was that those 8 witnesses recorded in the Book of Mormon looked upon the plates and handled them of which they bear witness in the [title page of the Book of Mormon]. . . . After the witnesses returned to the house the Angel again made his appearance to Joseph and received the plates from his hands.[7]
Hyrum Smith
Multiple writers recalled Hyrum’s testimony:

[W]ee wass talking about the Book of Mormon which he is one of the witnesses he said he had but too hands and too eyes he said he had seen the plates with his eyes and handled them with his hands.[8]
“[Mary Fielding Smith] bears testimony that her husband [Hyrum] has seen and handled the plates, &c.”[9]
Another writer heard Hyrum “declare, in this city in public, that what is recorded about the plates, &c. &c. is God’s solemn truth.”[10]
After being in Liberty Jail, Hyrum wrote:

I felt a determination to die, rather than deny the things which my eyes had seen, which my hands had handled, and which I had borne testimony to, wherever my lot had been cast.[11]
Samuel Smith
Daniel Tyler reported hearing Samuel Smith:

He knew his brother Joseph had the plates, for the prophet had shown them to him, and he had handled them and seen the engravings thereon.[12]
Conclusion
William Smith summarized the matter well when he said of all the Eight witnesses

that they not only Saw with their eyes but handled with their hands the said record . . . nor has either or any one of these witnesses ever to my knowledge Counteracted the testimony as given above Concerning the real existence of these Mormon tablets.[13]
The Eight witnesses consistently affirmed the accuracy of their published testimony, and the physical reality of their experience. The critics will have to seek elsewhere to support their speculations.

You also have “sure and pure knowledge” that you will be a god and have your own planet. Where is that in the bible that you hold so high? NOT. Why would you seek such power over other humans? How does this follow the teaching of your “savior” to “deny yourself”? (Matthew 16:24, Mark 8:34, Luke 9:23) It does not.
Po18Guy,

I think I understand where you are coming from since evidently Catholics think the word “adoption” distinguishes everyone else besides Christ from what He inherits, which for Him is a return to the same position He had with the Father before He came to this earth. But there are so many verses in the Bible that state clearly that what they who “overcome the world” are promised to receive is the grace that brings them divine sonship and becoming a ruler on the throne with Christ. If I were to deny that, I would be denying so many verses of Biblical scripture that I would be saying Christ and the apostles did not understand the words they were saying or writing. Of course they understood the words they were saying and writing.

Look at the parable of the talents with the words “I will make thee ruler over many things” in Matthew 25. Look at Paul’s epistle to the Galatians and his whole discussion about the Galatian saints needing to realize that they have an inheritance like Isaac and not like Ishmael. Look at all the verses in the book of Revelation that talk about what “him that overcometh” will receive in the hereafter. (2:17, 2:26, 3:5, 3:21, 21:7) Look at Romans 8:16-17. These verses are all explicit and clear about being joint-heirs and what it means to be a joint-heir. “Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord” means receive the joy that the Lord enjoys.

I don’t want to “rule” other people at all. But I accept the Bible teachings about this subject. And that kind of “rule” would absolutely be conditional upon perfect humility just as Christ taught, perfect love, perfect unselfishness, perfect desires to be one with Christ and one with the Father in allowing the free agency of spirits to progress by not forcing them in any way.

Po18Guy,
I suppose that even though I answer such questions again and again,
In a court of law, or a forum, your “answer” is non-responsive to the question.
(edited for the sake of brevity)
  1. God the Father was… the Father of the Jesus was God the Son in the pre-mortal life, condescended to come to earth…and the Son have perfect love and are omnipotent. God the Father is the Supreme Ruler of the Universe.
I did in no wise ask for a regurgitation of Mormon beliefs. Please, just answer, truthfully and directly, focusing like a laser beam, the following:
  1. Did your god have sex?
  2. Is your god only one of many in the universe?
  3. Are you on a path to become god of your own planet?
  4. Are you permitted to worship the man you call “Jesus”?
You can answer with only four words. Simple.
