Kind of a quiet day birding last Monday. Here’s one of our local specialties, an Abert’s Towhee. Not the most colorful plumage, but it’s personality makes up for it.

Another local specialty, Rufous-winged Sparrow. I seem to be a lot more common then they were when I first came to AZ. It took me a long time before I saw my first one. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

While cleaning and refilling the hummingbird feeder I keep out on the balcony, one of the bold hummingbirds flew inside through the open sliding glass door to examine the coleus plant I keep hanging near the window. He quickly flew back outside, and of course there was no time for a photo.

That’s always traumatic for me when that happens. Here’s my goldfinch feeder in the rain yesterday. They seemed to enjoy their little haven.

That’s the best “bird cage” I’ve ever seen, where the birds are free to come and go 😀

It keeps the big birds out and it freaks out the House Sparrows. They’re afraid to go in.

I have a friend who is a hen blackbird. It’s a strange relationship.
In the spring and summer every year for the past three years she’s had several clutches of chicks and I have to feed her more often at such times. She’s very brave and a real hunter and only comes to me when the weather is particularly dry and she can’t find what she needs. She’s a very good blackbird and has very much fulfilled her duty to The Creator.

She’s off somewhere else at the moment but that happens and it just makes seeing her again so much the better. Until then I have my other noisy friends, about thirty sparrows! Very funny, very cute, never a dull moment.

Your blackbird sounds like she has manners Lee 🙂
I have English blackbirds moving into my garden right on cue to eat the mulberries and cane berries each Summer and we can’t seem to come to an agreement 🤔

I had a similar problem when I grew a single strawberry plant. We watched it slowly grow and then it became bigger and turned red and then…she got it!

It’s the price we pay. They do love berries though don’t they. We have a June berry tree which is a wonderful ornamental tree really. After a lovely blossom it starts to grow red berries and it is full of huge wood pigeons for days. That’s a great tree actually because it’s leaves turn a beautiful copper and red right now.

I’ll look that June berry tree up 🙂 It sounds very nice .
I do have Sugar plum trees that I don’t mind the birds hopping into, that takes their minds off other things.
The Blackbirds sound really beautiful in the mornings at the moment, calling their song ,there’s a slight echo that gives real depth to their song
