What name will next Pope choose?

It’s been exactly 1,100 years and 145 Popes since Pope Lando became the last Pope to take an original name (John Paul I was only semi-original since he took the names of his two predecessors). So all those hoping for Michael, Patrick, Joseph, Ignatius, etc. etc. etc. are pretty much guaranteed to be disappointed.
Just as those expecting a non Italian pope were guaranteed to be disappointed after JPI died. 😛

I don’t like those choices. I would prefer a name not used previously by a Pope and one I can pronounce.

No, not Peter. I think I heard that cardinals have a rule that if elected their not allowed to take Peter bc of the significance of the name and of the man.
And who, pray tell, would enforce such a rule against the Pope?

LOL where is THIS rule written?!

It is amazing all the “rules” people think are there when really they are not. If you understand the Papacy you would understand why there could be no such rule.

Def. not Benedict, JP, John, Paul, or Pius! 5 names in 100 years. Time to give it a break… for now!

Would like something like Leo (been 100 years since the last one), Gregory, Ignatius, or Patrick.

Why not Peter? I am being serious what explanation does Church have for not allowing or not choosing the name Peter for pope and what would be the harm if the next pope is called Peter II? would somebody please explain this to me?
thank you

There is no such law. The supposed harm is superstition based on a false prophecy.

It is indeed superstition, but it probably would not be a good signal anyway in terms of the new pope’s self-image. Yes, they’re all successors to Peter but to call oneself literally the “Second Peter” is pretty presumptuous. And definitely not what we need. We need strength and humility.

I’m hoping for Pope Paul VII

I really don’t care about the name or nationality, etc, as long as those whining for sweeping grassroots changes are disappointed!!!

I think however, that JP or Benedict would be too much to live up to. And the Roman numerals need to go down some 🙂

I don’t think that’s going to happen - rather they will continue just in order. I think Cardinal Scola will be elected tomorrow and become Gregory XVII. With the candlestick.

Well, by going down, I just meant a name having a lower number attached to it. Mea culpa.

I know what you meant. And I mean that my prediction is Benedict XVI will be followed by Gregory XVII, so the numbers won’t go down.

There were too many to quote, but wanted to thank the authors of the humorous posts 🙂
They brightened my morning! 😃

Personal preference is for the pope to pick a new name for I feel the Church is moving into a new period in it’s history. (Just a gut feeling, not a change in actual teachings or beliefs).

But whatever name is chosen, I’m sure it will have deep meaning to our new pontiff - and said meaning will probably be hacked to bits by the media 🤷
