As I’m sure you have all heard Ireland has passed the same-sex referendum yesterday. I’m a young Catholic and my faith is important to me I can’t help but wonder what of Ireland now? I have nothing against gay people each to their own but in my heart of hearts I cannot be supportive of same-sex marriage. It is offending God and I can’t be part of it. I know we are in the end times and I feel more suffering will be on the way down the line I can see it now! Even throughout the referendum if anyone apposed to it they were bullied and criticised specially on social media. I can’t help but feel in the future practising Catholics will be persecuted it already feels like so many want the church out of Ireland I fear for the future.

Dear therese11–

We’re told in scripture that as followers of Jesus, we’re not given a spirit of fear.

I understand why this is scarey, nobody wants to be hated or or dog-piled on in social media or become shunned by friends and family in real life. But I want to challenge you to take courage.

We’re also told in scripture that perfect love casts out fear! I think this might be the key for how we are to respond. The early Christians were known for how they loved one another. It was attractive to the outside world. Quite frankly, there’s nothing attractive about the gloating and snide, ugly remarks the pro SSM side makes about the issue–it shows a complete lack of love. We are not to respond with sarcasm of our own, but with logic, gentleness, and compassion. You won’t “win over” everybody, but it’s the right thing to do, and some people will notice.

Also, don’t be too quick to make predictions for the future–yes, Western civilization is pretty much a dying or dead thing. ( I personally think we’ve gone beyond the tipping point. I think Western Civ is pretty much unrevivable at this point). However, our culture is not all there is to the world. There are places where Christianity grows and flourishes.

I’m also curious to see what happens in the future. Once upon a time I thought the biggest problem with widespread acceptance of SSM would be a generalized decadence. I was surprised to see that free speech and intellectual inquiry were the first casualties…

Anyhow, sorry for the disjointed thoughts, I just woke up. Our job is to speak the truth and to love our fellow man.

It is a very bad time for Ireland and for the Church here but all we can do is pray and lead the example so perhaps the country can see the mistake they made in voting yes. Now those who are pro same sex marriage will want to legalize it here in the north of Ireland.

The can has been opened and the worms are out. In a very short time, Ireland will become California. The progressive liberals have been in charge here for some time and we are a mess. We have abortion on demand, same sex marriage and transgender bathroom/locker rooms for school children. Euthanasia is on the way. I don’t believe we are in the End Times, but I think we are heading for a chastisement; mankind is need of an attitude adjustment.

This is the ideological colonisation which the Holy Father warned about. The next colonisation will be by Islam.

It just seems, at least in my church, we never heard a word about it from the pulpit. And I know some Catholics, who are involved in their church, who, seeing the referendum as a '‘human rights issue’, voted yes.

Is there a lack of teaching in our church in Ireland today? Are priests afraid to speak out?
Yes, if people speak up, there will be persecution. But otherwise, won’t we be classified as being ‘‘Lukewarm’’, like the believers in the book of Revelation whom Jesus spewed out of his mouth? How can we respect the ‘‘rights’’ of man over obedience to God? Yes, '‘You will be hated by all for my name’s sake…’ (Matthew 10:22)

It clearly is an example of what the Pope spoke of, but it is important to note that “The next colonization will be by Islam,” is your personal opinion, and was never made by the Holy Father.

I point this fact out for clarity, so as your words are not misinterpreted and inadvertently put into the mouth of Pope Francis, as they are by many people, in and outside the faith.

Peace and all good!

When did I ever say that Pope Francis said this? I appreciate your attempt at clarification, but my original post was perfectly clear in and of itself.

Satan, and then Hell.

Unless some serious changes are made.

Yes priests in Ireland are afraid to speak out because they know they will be attacked! But I can’t help but feel it’s their job to speak out to speak the truth and the teachings Jesus taught no? They have to be strong and courageous and keep remembering they are representing Jesus. Jesus said “If you love Me you will keep My commandments” how is Catholics voting yes loving and following Jesus?

Chastisement. Coming either from natural phenomena such as floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, or from man-made catastrophes, such was warfare, disease, social upheaval, etc. The Creator won’t tolerate this for much longer. Such a public declaration against His clear directives will have clear cut catastrophic effects for Ireland.

God forgive us 😔

I don’t know what will become of Ireland. I am really sad. My dad’s ancestors were Irish who immigrated here in the 1860’s or 1870’s.
After 100 years they were more culturally Irish than Catholic Irish. There are a few of us who are practicing Catholics.
It is shocking to me that once Catholic Ireland is thumbing its nose at the Catholic Church.

There have been so many scandals here lately regarding claimed child molestation by priests and religious. So many people feel the church is being hypocritical, and they are unforgiving towards it. It reminds me of Romans 2:24 ‘‘You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God? For "The Name of GOD is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.’’

So sad that people can’t separate God and the entire church from the acclaimed actions of a few. May God have mercy on us all and forgive our sins.

Wait, God doesn’t like gay people marrying each other in Ireland, so he’s going to kill a bunch of random people in a disaster?

The priests in the west of Ireland DO speak out. And they are vilified for it.
The vote in the west, was NO. My in-laws are rolling over in their graves.

That’s good, I know my ancestors would be so sad

I watched a film about St. Patrick. In the film, St. Patrick has a vision and he is told God’s light will always shine in Ireland although for a time it will grow very dim…it will never go out and eventually be rekindled.

I believe in the end Ireland will turn back to God. St. Patrick is still watching over them from heaven. It will require much prayer on our part as well as for all of Europe.
