“Alyssa Lies”…it’s a country song about a little girl who tells her father about a girl in her class named “Alyssa” who lies about her abuse by her parents, “Alyssa lies to the teachers” in the end of the song is how Alyssa is no longer at school because “she lies with Jesus now”. :crying: I can’t remember who sings it, but it makes tears come.

Some great songs here! Saturday in the Park…love Chicago (or CTA for Chicago Transit Authority as we used to call them) and Blood Sweat and Tears. I got to see both groups way back in about 1969 or so at the Mississippi River Festival on the campus of SIUE in Edwardsville IL. And Janis Joplin, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Iron Butterfly.

A song that’s very meaningful to me is Always. It was my parents’ song. They danced to it at their wedding and their 50th anniversary. Someone even sang it at the funeral parlor before we left for my mother’s funeral last summer…after almost 57 years of marriage. It was just the right song for them, and the kind of marriage I wish for other people.

I’m especially fond of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel. It was played at my Uncles funeral and now I can’t listen to it without tearing up because he was one of the few positive influences on my life as a child and he meant so much to me.

Also the reprise of “I’ll cover you” that they sing at Angel’s funeral in RENT is an amazing song, theres so much emotion packed into it. Its a beautiful song but you’d have to watch the scene to really feel the power behind it.

Candy Says - Velvet Underground (for crying over what was, and what might have been…everyone needs catharsis now and then)
Friend to the Friendless - World/Inferno Friendship Society (always refreshes my sense of purpose)
pretty much anything - the Ramones (was there ever a voice at once as funny and sad as Joey’s? Guitar as untechnical yet commanding as Johnny’s? or lyrics as stupid/brilliant as DeeDee’s? RIP, guys, you are profoundly missed)
Life On Mars - David Bowie (it’s just beautiful…plenty of his work is)
Miss America - David Byrne (this one moves me…to dance like a loon :o )
 
Ok this is slightly off topic but I have got to post this here. There is a secular artist named Patti Griffin, she has a song called “Mary” on her album titled Flaming Red. Anyone who has the ability to go online and listen to this song, it is a must. I post this here because although it is a religious song, she is a secular artist and this song seems to have come out of nowhere. It came out before the Passion of the Christ but the words are very mysterious and will certainly bring images from that movie to your mind…you will be brought to tears if you listen closely enough.
 
Going through some old records (yes, the vinyl discs with the grooves), I found my “Rubber Soul” by the Beatles. One song, which I liked then, really hit some 40 years later:

I LOVE that song to…I pretty much love all the Queen songs. Have you guys heard “No-One but You” by Queen? They sang it in tribute to Freddie rigt after he died and all those who die before their time. It makes me think of a few people I’ve loved and lost and makes me want to cry every time I hear it.
