What secular songs move you emotionally?

**I haven’t read through the thread, but I hope you can help…

there is a country song (sung by a male) that is about a little girl who is in a volatile home and eventually sees her dad shoot her mom and then himself. She is taken in by another family who then sends her to Sunday school. When she sees a pic of Jesus or the Crucifix, she says “I know that man. He was with me when i was hiding behind the couch the day my dad shot my mom” or something to that effect.

Please tell me you know what I’m taking about!!! What is it called and who sings it?:confused:

You should hear John Michael Montgomery sing that in concert. Talk about sending chills up your spine! We saw him last July 2nd (our 18th anniversary). He got a standing ovation after he played that and he got too choked up to continue for a few minutes.

It is a very powerful song!

I will concur about Dan Folgelberg’s “Leader of the Band.” That song will turn me to complete mush each and every time.

“My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man.” Those words just kill me, for I love and admire my dad very much, who has since passed on. My life has indeed been a poor attempt to be even one-percent of his great character.

And when the part is sang, “I don’t think I said ‘I love you’ near enough,” I just lose it, like right now as I type! My dad was very old-school, and you just didn’t say that to him, for it would have made him uncomfortable. Still, he knew I did and I knew he did. I miss him each and every day.

I think I caught his spirit later that same year
I’m sure I heard his echo in my baby’s new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years.

I could have written those lines myself, except for the time frame – my baby who bears my dad’s name and his good temperament was born twelve years after his death.

He died around Eastertime in 1974. Dear God, I still miss him so much.
 
My husbands always cries (and I mean really cries) during “Butterfly Kisses”

“Streets of Heaven”- I really don’t like country music and the first time I heard this song, my friend kept trying to get me to listen and I tried but the words went right over my head. I heard this song several times after and I kept tuning it out when finally I did hear it and I couldn’t believe it.

It’s about a mother praying to God while sitting by her 7 yr old daughter’s hospital bed whose fighting for her life begging God not to take her. Every time I here this song, I see my mom begging God not to take her 7 year old daughter’s life. 😦
 
I haven’t read the ENTIRE thread, so these may be duplicates…

I agree that “In The Ghetto” by Elvis Presley is very emotional.
“Cat’s in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin always chokes me up.

I really love “One Of Us” by Joan Osbourne.
I am not clear if this is a parody on Catholics or if she is sincere, but I love the line about What would you ask of God if you just were allowed one question.

I’d love to but would probably become so much of a blubbering mess as to cause anyone with me to deny that they know me, lol.
another song that gets me everytime is the one where a girl has cancer and has to go to prom with a bald head so her boyfriend shows up with his head shaved too. The words have something to do with dancing, but I am terrible with song titles and artists:o Anyone know this one?

I like Fortunate Son too, and pretty much all CSNY and Neil Young songs. I never heard of Coven.

I also love “Last Kiss” by Pearl Jam. I know it’s a cover, but I’m not sure who did the original.

Talking about “Leader of the Band” and “Living Years” reminded me of other “dad” songs… notably Reba McEntire’s “The Greatest Man I Never Knew”:

How was I to know he thought I hung the moon.

Then the last verse kills me:

And the last verse of “Alone Again Naturally” where he talks about his father dying at age 65 (as mine did) and his mother never recovering from it until her own passing, despite encouragement and love from her grown child. I can’t even quote that one without falling apart, because I could have written it myself! 😦
