What secular songs move you emotionally?

I almost forgot Kenny Chesney’s “Who You’d Be Today”. Both my in-laws and my parents lost a daughter in her early teens (I was nine months old when my sister died; my husband was 7 or 8 years old when his sister died) and that song just tears me to pieces, especially now as both sets of parents have seen their other children grow up and start their lives and their own families… they must wonder about the children they lost and “who they’d be today”.

And then there’s Christopher Cross’s song “Think of Laura”… I haven’t heard it in years, but I always remember the line, “When you think of Laura, laugh, don’t cry/ I know she’d want it that way.”

And then there is a song (in Spanish) that I cannot listen to without bawling my eyes out. “Amor Eterno” (Eternal Love) which is about a mother who lost a child. It was written by legendary Mexican crooner, Juan Gabriel, who composed the song for his friend, Rocio Durcal (another well-known Mexican singer) who lost her son in a drowning accident while she and her family were on vacation in Acapulco (if I remember the story correctly). Both artists have recorded the song (Gabriel dedicated his version to his mother), but Durcal’s has that broken-hearted longing that just rips my heart to shreds.

Okay, got to go find the Kleenex again…

Also:
Into The Mystic by Van Morrison
You Were Always on My Mind by Elvis

:crying: I didn’t even have to listen to any of these and I’m all torn-up! I’m at work and it was embarrassing - a co-worker came over to help me with something I had asked about earlier today, and I was sitting here, reading this thread, and my eyes were all watery.

This is why I listen primarily to country music - it hits straight to my heart and makes me get all mushy and cry. That and any song that has a memory attached to it…of course, being pregnant, I am now just crying at song titles ;).

Just about 98% of anything by Phil Collins gets me everytime.

Nickleback has a couple: Amen and Far Away

Top of my head

Auld Lang Syne

Send in the Clowns

Romeo and Juliet, Dire Straits

Cool Choices, but do you mean Auld Lang Syne (like Guy Lombardo on New Year’s Eve) or Dan Fogelberg’s Another Auld Lang Syne? Both are cool in their own ways. I’m a big Fogelberg fan.

“Grace” and “The West’s Awake” as sung by Anthony Kearns of the Irish Tenors.

“Across the Universe” by the Beatles. Many other Beatles songs as well including “In My Life” but I can’t think of them all right now.

The musicals The Phantom of the Opera and Jekyll and Hyde.

“Starry Night” by Don Mclean.

“And so it Goes” by Billy Joel.

“Kathy’s Song”(I think?) by Simon and Garfunkel.

So many others I couldn’t possible name them all… 🙂

Isn’t Fogelberg’s song “Same Old Lang Syne”? I don’t have my CD available (hubby’s got it in his truck) or am I thinking of another song?

And Don McLean’s song… Is it “Starry Night” or “Vincent”? The reason I ask is because I have this really cool travel mug that has Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” on it and when someone commented on it, I told them to listen to the Don McLean song “Vincent”… I hope I didn’t give them the wrong song title!

“Concrete Angel” by Martina McBride has me in tears every time I hear it, especially live–the audience is so quiet during this song that you could almost hear a pin drop, and Martina gets a standing applause every time…it’s a sad song about child abuse–sad, yet beautiful.

Other Martina songs move me in different ways.

God Bless,

Barbara

Another Martina McBride fan here:thumbsup: although my hubby is an even bigger fan!

You’re right; all her songs are emotional (it’s that voice!) but the song that she sings that just breaks my heart whenever I hear it is “Whatever You Say”, a song which captures the main reason why so many marriages and relationships fail.

And your sig line is one of my favorites: “Anyway”!

It had me curious too. You’re right. It is “Same Old Lang Syne” (I checked on my CD), a great song. And yes, it is “Vincent”, another great song (I had to Google that one). Did you know they have a movie called Starry Night?

Nostalgic/wistfully- “Our Town” by Iris DeMent
Spookily- “Ode to Billie Joe” by Bobby Gentry
Funny- “white Trash Wedding” by Dixie Chicks
Sad- “Cats in the Cradle” by Ugly Kid Joe, or
“Oh Very Young” by Cat Stephens, oh and
“The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers.

I like a lot of the others people have put.

‘Angels’ - Robbie Williams

The first 4 piano chords give me goosebumps

Josh Groban
  • To Where You Are
  • You Raise Me Up
  • You Are Loved (Don’t Give Up)
  • Vincent
Well, most of Josh Groban’s songs move me emotionally.

Most of IL DIVO songs also move me emotionally and even more so then do Josh’s songs.
  • Un Regalo Que Te Dio La Vida (Spanish version of “Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman” - some of the lyrics are different/better) - IL DIVO
  • Hoy Que Ya No Estas Agui - IL DIVO
  • Por Ti Seré (Spanish version of “You Raise Me Up” - lyrics are different/better) - IL DIVO
  • Solo Otra Vez (Spanish version of “All By Myself” - lyrics different/better) - IL DIVO
When it comes to those Il Divo songs I wish the whole world knew the Spanish language because the lyrics are different since it cannot translate exactly to go with the music. The lyrics are so much better in Spanish and I cry every single time I hear the songs by Il Divo in Spanish, especially the Spanish version of “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman,” it gets me every time.
Clay Aiken
  • Solitaire - Clay Aiken
  • Measure of A Man - Clay Aiken
Many other songs by Clay Aiken also, especially the ones from his “demo cd” which is not in production right now but I have them on my computer.
Those songs sung by Clay Aiken include;
  • I Will Be Here
  • For Having You To Love
  • I Know How The River Feels
  • Look What Love Has Done
  • Love Of My Life
  • She Said Yes
  • More To This Life (although you could say that this is a Christian song)
  • In Not Of (this is Christian though, but I’ll still count it in, I love it)
Just a few more songs among many many more;
  • Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman - Bryan Adams
  • (Everything I Do) I Do It for You - Bryan Adams
  • All for Love - Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart & Sting
  • Vincent - Don McLean
  • Crying - Don McLean
  • American Pie - Don McLean
  • If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot
  • Rainy Day People - Gordon Lightfoot
  • In The Ghetto - Elvis Presley
  • Always On My Mind - Elvis Presley
  • I Just Can’t Help Believin’ - Elvis Presley
  • Cats In The Cradle - Harry Chapin
  • You’ve Got A Friend - James Taylor
  • Fire & Rain - James Taylor
  • Shower The People - James Taylor
  • Handy Man - James Taylor

“Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” from Phantom tears me up.

“Kathy’s Song” – if that’s the one that starts “What a dream I had,” I’m with you!!!

I think I’m showing my advanced-can’t-remember-anything age on this thread. You’re right…Same Old Lang Syne.

AND you’re right about Vincent. I think Starry Night is just what people call it. Like The Pina Colada Song is really Escape.

Whatever we call them, I like them.

I can’t think of the melody of Kathy’s Song, but I was sure those weren’t the lyrics. I looked it up, and ti starts like this:

I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls.
And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies.

I think the song you mean is For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her. Did you know Tori Amos recorded this?

What a dream I had
dressed in organdy
clothed in crinoline
of smoky burgundy
softer than the rain…
