Q: What moral values does the church embrace?

A: Mormons emphasize hard work, volunteerism, education and chastity; they oppose abortion, gay relationships, gambling and pornography. Family is especially important to Mormons, rooted in their belief that marriage and family relationships among the faithful are “sealed” and may continue through eternity. As just one example of this emphasis, the church directs members to reserve Mondays for what they call Family Home Evening, when families gather on their own for prayer and instruction, followed by fun activities.

I think that many catholics can agree with such moral values.

Not entirely true on abortion. This is a quote from the lds.org web site in the April 1973 edition on the New Era magazine under Policies and Procedures: Statement on Abortion.

“The Church opposes abortion and counsels its members not to submit to or perform an abortion except in the rare cases where, in the opinion of competent medical counsel, the life or good health of the mother is seriously endangered or where the pregnancy was caused by rape and produces serious emotional trauma in the mother. Even then it should be done only after counseling with the local presiding priesthood authority and after receiving divine confirmation through prayer.”

And, as this article points out,

(R)ead the fine print. The only way you can have your family with you is if each one of them has lived a sterling Mormon life. Otherwise, a spouse, parent, or child may be locked forever in a lower heaven. Indeed, the faithful Mormon wife of a lukewarm Mormon man will leave him behind in an inferior place while she goes on and is sealed to a more devout Mormon gentleman. These two will then beget and raise their own, new family.

This is rather amusing:
Latter-day Saints find the question itself insulting. Their scriptures include the Old and New Testaments. But Mormons also believe that authentic Christianity vanished a century after Christ and was restored only through Smith.
How can it be insulting to suggest that people who think historic Christianity is inauthentic are themselves not practicing authentic Christianity?

The whole idea that substantive statements about other people’s beliefs should be evaluated by how polite they are is silly. They should be evaluated by how true they are. Obviously we should not be unnecessarily rude. . . .

You beat me to it:Q: Are Mormons Christian?
Code:
A: Latter-day Saints find the question itself insulting. Their scriptures include the Old and New Testaments. **But Mormons also believe that authentic Christianity vanished a century after Christ** and was restored only through Smith. Smith revised -- and in his view corrected -- large sections of the Bible. Other sacred Mormon books contain Smith's revelations. And Mormons consider their church presidents to be prophets.
So THEY find it insulting when they are the ones who say the Church Jesus established flopped at the get go, that what we consider historical Christianity has been engulfed in paganism, and that the Bible has been corrupted this whole time…and THEY find it insulting. :tsktsk:Q: Do Christian groups generally accept Mormon beliefs?
Code:
A: No. The Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant group, considers the LDS church a cult and sends missionaries to Mormon communities to spread "the true Gospel of Jesus Christ."
OH are you still insulted? They go door to door saying we dont have the true Gospel?
I find this pretending quite insulting. They should come out and say it, Catholics (and Protestants) are not Christian, anything short is deception.Q: Why don’t Mormons drink alcohol?
Code:
A: Mormons follow a health code that Smith said came to him in an 1833 revelation known as the Word of Wisdom. It bars the use of tobacco, alcohol and hot drinks -- later defined as coffee and tea.

Cold drinks with caffeine are also forbidden.
This, though it is their right to believe what they want, is simply overboard in my opinion. That being said I wonder how Coke and Pepsi are doing business wise in Utah?

Caffeinated soft drinks are no longer forbidden in Mormonism. The LDS church now claims that caffeine is not the reason for the prohibition on coffee and tea.

You won’t find caffeinated soda at the COB (Church Office Building).

Are there any on-line sources for this statement. I’m only asking because I have Mormon friends who still think that there is a prohibition.

Back on mute

If you go to www.lds.org and search for “cola drinks” you will see that every article they link to “advises” or “counsels” against the use of caffeinated soft drinks. They say you should “live the spirit of the Word of Wisdom” - and I agree that LDS should do so if they believe it to be scripture. But it is apparently no longer “forbidden” because it can no longer keep you out of the temple as alcohol, tobacco, coffee and tea certainly will.

My LDS sister drinks Diet Coke by the case and was recently married in the temple (for the 2nd time, following her temple divorce).

My LDS nieces and nephews, both in Utah and Kentucky, also make no secret that they drink Coke, Dr. Pepper, Mountain Dew and other such stuff, and all those over 19 have temple recommends and the ones that are married are temple-married.

So it seems that caffeine is not the bugaboo now that it was back when I was LDS.

God bless,

Drinking cafeinated drinks such as Coke and Pepsi has never been sufficient grounds for barring anyone from going to the temple.

This is a sham. The Mormon approach is to say how much they look like Christians. They are charitable, they worship on Sunday, they are clean cut. The only problem is that their core theology is not at all Christian no matter how often they get a haircut or abstain drugs or porn. They follow a non-Christian religion that is posing as being Christian and sucking in confused people, often right out of real Christianity.

Not since you were born, perhaps. There are things that happened before 1990, you know. 😉

Coke and Pepsi have never stopped anyone from going to the temple ever since they were invented.

How can they insist on marriage being eternal, when Jesus clearly indicated this is not the case? They have often told me they follow the Bible. If Jesus Christ does not have the final word on things, they are not Christian.

Mormonism is true. It is the restoration of the original form of Christianity by revelation in our day. It is the only true form of Christianity in the world today.

Historical Christianity is apostate. It apostatized centuries ago, as prophesied in the Bible. It has no legitimate priesthood. It has corrupted and perverted the true doctrines and practices of Christianity, as taught in the Bible and in the early Christian church. It is a corrupt and dead religion, without any form of ecclesiastical legitimacy in the sight of God. Hence the LDS Church is the only true Christian Church in the world at the present time.

Scripture quotes would be nice. Where did Christ say that marriage was not eternal?

There are many instances, although none very clear that hint and talk about eternally binding something. In one case, binding something could be two persons in marriage. Matt. 16:19.

Matt. 22:28. “Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.” If at that time, they did not believe of eternal marriage, why would they ask about it? Jesus answers and says none of them, but this is not because the marriages are broken, it is because those marriages were not sealed, or bound. Once resurrected, marriage and such will not happen if you were provided with a chance while living. Thus the issue brought up earlier about a woman doing better and leaving a man behind in heaven and marrying another man is an awful assumption that you know the doctrine well, while in reality it shows ignorance in the matter, and a partial understanding.

Another issue I would like to address is the assumption that because mormons believe that they have the TRUE gospel, they think that all other religions are not Christian. This is utterly incorrect. Mormons preach no such thing. We acknowledge the existence of other Christian religion. (Yes I said that we mormons are Christian for if you listen to any mormon’s testimony, they will tell you that they believe (or know as the case may be) that Jesus is our savior and that his atonement can save us and that everything we have is a testimony of the truthfulness of Christ’s ministry.) We do not say that because you are Catholic, you are not Christian. We say that you are Christian although you do not have the true restored gospel. You do not have all the truth. No one will ever tell you that you are not a Christian because you are Catholic. No one will ever challenge your testimony of that. They will just say that you do not believe in our living prophets and modern revelation. So please, I ask of you, don’t judge because you read one thing and assumed. Assuming is a dangerous thing. Most of the time it leads people to wrong conclusion.

Ya… nevertheless. the Core theology of Mormonism does not resemble Christianity in any of it’s details, root assumptions or goals. You can call it “the restoration of Christianity” if you want to distract from that fact, but it does not.

I’m confused at how The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints does not resemble Christianity. The basic definition of Christianity is that you accept Christ as your savior and Redeemer. Got that covered. What next? LDS are faithful Christians who accept Christ. They see him as their Redeemer and the only way to enter into the Kingdom of God is to repent through the atonement of Christ. Jesus was crucified and resurrected that we may all be resurrected and return to live with our Heavenly Father again. I fail to see how this qualifies us as Non-Christian.
