What will provoke the next Ecumenical Council?

What do you think will cause the next ecumenical council, and when do you think it will be? Next 20 years? Within the next 100 years?

We are still processing the teachings and effects of Vatican 2, of course.

But it’s just a fun question. What theological issues would be addressed?

Personally, I expect the next council dealing with family issues, similar to the Synod on the Family. It’ll probably have to deal with the hot-button issues of LGBT and women ordination and divorce and remarriage.

What I hope: That it would advance ecumenical dialogue with the Eastern Orthodox and have concrete steps towards for full communion with them. But also, I hope it would clarify the moral issues of today, especially regarding topics that don’t have clear answers (like Transgender persons?) etc.

“Provoke” is a less than appropriate word, given its’ negative connotations.

There’s always the chance that the official “black and white” answer to some of these things will be: “It depends on the case.” 😉

EDIT: Sorry, I thought it said when will the next Ecumenical Council happen. I think confusion on VII will cause VIII.

There were roughly 100 years between Vatican I and Vatican II. I wouldn’t imagine that we’ll see another council convened so quickly. But then, it’s above my pay grade. Thankfully! 🙂
 
People must first know and understand what Vatican II was all about and implement everything first faithfully and correctly. Then we can have another council. One thing at a time.

Most Church historians say it take about 100 years for the Church to stabilize after Councils. Each Council is often followed by 50 years of confusion, followed by 50 years of healing.
 
There is really no way to know at this point in time what the motivation will be, but I think the next ecumenical council will be done online.

No reason why with modern communications technology, the bishops and other participants can’t stay at home instead of going through the entire expense of trekking to Rome or wherever.
 
I have no idea what might spark the next council or when, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Pope Francis call one. He reminds me more and more of John XXIII each day.
 
My prediction based on secret sources: We’ll have Vatican III within the next 15 years.
 
The current crisis in the Church should be one of the factors.

I hope that when it happens Vatican II gets thrown out or amended to fit with the traditional teachings of the Faith.

Also the Novus Ordo Mass is ether reformed to be more traditional or suppressed completely
