What will provoke the next Ecumenical Council?

A lot of people don’t like big changes, particularly in the area of religious observance. If there were to be big changes, they’ll be phased in over an extended period of time.

If the church would go back to traditional Latin Mass, you’d have all kinds of people who are now participating as readers, EM’s, that will no longer be needed, unsure of what to do.
 
What was Vatican II a response to exactly? Modern/secular culture? Because most (or even all) councils are responses to heresy. Not what the world is doing.

Whatever the creeping heresy is now though, that’s what would spark it.

I’m hoping for perhaps a Third Vatican Council. Or something of the sort. To end all of the speculative grey areas that followed Vatican II. Hopefully it would bring an end to the hersesies and abuses that plague the Church today.

There have been heresies and abuses in every age, a goal to bring them to an end is an awfully high bar to reach.
 
The vast majority of the Faithful were horrified by the changes in the Mass after Vatican II.

Those faithful who serve in those ministries will simply go back to silent prayer and offering their sacrifices during the Mass which is where they are most needed Augustinian

That’s really not the way I remembered it, although I was just a kid born in 1956.

But even if you are right on this, most of the people that were around 50 years ago have long since died.
 
I’ve only experienced a post-Vatican 2 Catholicism, personally. It wasn’t until the internet recently that I found it had many detractors.

I meant the current heresy of modernism. There have been various heresies throughout the Church’s history, but each council addressed them and were soon expunged. That’s what the Holy See needs to do today, because this age of modernism/relativism is proving destructive to the faithful.
 
“Modernism” aka relativism is the problem that you cite, but the other poster is interested in a massive re-writing of the liturgy.

What do you think, are the issues related, will addressing one resolve the other?
 
To me yes the issues are both related to change the way we worship is to change the way we believe.

Before Vatican II Catholics understood the Faith now with the Novus Ordo and all the confusion caused by the Council. The vast majority of Catholics no longer go to Mass or abandon the Faith

The number of people associate with the Lefebvrites and other like minded groups are really wee compared to the whole church. That’s the real problem. Most folks who attend mass and contribute to the church are pleased enough with current situation.
 
The youth in the Church are usually more traditional.

Plus Archbishop Lefebvre’s excommunication was lifted by Pope Benedict XVI
 
I thought it was only lifted on the bishops he consecrated. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong!
 
I wasn’t really looking at the other poster. By modernism/relativism I mean poor catechesis, lack of reverence, liturgical abuses, cafeteria Catholics, and liberal bishops. I believe that the OF is just as valid and licit as the EF, but it has been subject to several abuses over the past five decades.

Fair enough, I don’t see it but if you do, fine.

But if the Latin Mass is reinstated, would you be in favor of an indult for those attached to the vernacular?
