It is obvious you have joined this forum to lead us away from Catholic Church. Even if that were possible, which it isn’t, what exactly would you be leading us to? Your profile says that you don’t have a religion.

In all honesty, I am getting a little tired of people joining this forum in the attempt to get us to negatively question our faith and ultimately leave Christ’s Church. I find this to be extremely arrogant. How dare you come here, spend absolutely no time getting to know any of us, and then presume to tell us our faith in Christ is flawed! Is it not your job, your responsibility, or your mission to convert us.

Scout :tiphat:
However it is our job to convert you!!!

****I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. - ISAIAH 42:8 ****
**

**Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation **of them that hate me; - EXODUS 20:4-5
**
Ex_Catholic,

Where are you??? Yuhooo??? Pay careful attention to this:

You quoted Scriptures perfectly regarding the making of “any” graven images. But I suggest you take a deeper look at Scriptures that you are reading. Carefully read the following verses:

"Make two cherubim of beaten gold" Exodus 25:18

**"… on its panels he carved cherubim, lions and palm trees." 1Kings 7:36 **

**"And the Lord said unto Moses, 'Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass that, if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of bronze, he lived. Numbers 21:8-9

And within the inner sanctuary he made two cherubim of olive tree, each ten cubits high. And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub: from the outmost part of the one wing unto the outmost part of the other was ten cubits. An the other cherub was ten cubits; both the cherubim were of one measure and one size. The height of the one cherub was ten cubits and so was it of the other cherub And he set the cherubim within the inner house. And they stretched forth the wings of the cherubim, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall.; and their wings touched one another in teh middle of the house. And he overlaid the cherubim with gold And he carved all the walls of the house round abut with carved figures of cherubim and the palm trees and open flowers, within and without. 1 Kings 6:23-29 KJV.**

Don’t strip the Churches of images.

Happy reading!

Pio

I still want to know if ex-Catholic has photo albums in his house or has ever built a snowman. If he has, he might as well name him Baal, by the terms of his argument.

Here’s the thing, the saints remind us how to live holy lives dedicated to God. Their placement throughout the Church is a reminder of how to live and is at the same time a reminder of their eternal communion with all the children of God.

Where are you ex-Catholic? Why don’t you come on and refute the explanations that people have given you? Is it because you can’t refute them? Is it because you’re a coward and are afraid to come back on? :yup:

I am in RCIA.

And I used to order Jack Chick tracts by the box of 1,000. I’ve seen most of Jack Chick’s stuff. On Monday night, I had an appointment with my Priest and I showed him a Jack Chick receipt and other things that could incriminate me as anti-Catholic. He said it was all nothing to be concerned about. As long as I wasn’t still involved that way. He only learned about Jack Chick a few years ago.

Yet for me, it wasn’t a little thing to get past the anti-Catholic messages. And I’m surprised that my priest seems to be so ignorant of anti-Catholics. With my close ties, I could easily be under-cover and still very dangerously anti-Catholic. My priest seems ignorant of that possibility. It took me quite a while to struggle through anti-Catholic stuff. You have no idea how much distrust I had. For example “Trail of Blood” etc.

Important: With anti-Catholic web sites – I think it is important to research their motive and their central message. To find out what message they have to say (ignoring for a moment the anti-Catholic message). With the web site dokimos.org there is a core message.

“PRAY TO GOD RIGHT NOW AND ASK JESUS TO BE YOUR SAVIOR!” (the caps are theirs).

It is not a bad idea to ask Jesus to be your savior. But is that really the starting point?

Before I started thinking Catholic this year (I’m almost 50), just after my 30th birthday I got a ministry. I became a part-time evangelist for a little more than six years.

A big problem with the dokimos message is that there is no repentance. Before Jesus came, there was a message of repentance from John the Baptist.

Also see about King Jeroboam in 1 Kings 12:26-33. His evil was to make an easy false salvation, with false temples, false idols, false priests, false sacrifices, a false feast, etc. It was an easier but false Judaism. Read the book of Tobit and you will see how so many Jews died in exile just to get rid of the traps that caused so many Jews to be deceived and go to hell.

Would your wife or husband have married you if you didn’t want them very much?

How much do we need to want Jesus?

What happens if we pray to ask Jesus to be our savior and we don’t want Jesus first in our life?

Is it enough to want Jesus a little as long as it doesn’t interfere with your lifestyle?

I think those who speak the dokimos message can be rejected for their heresy.
The dokimos message is:
FAITH ALONE
GRACE ALONE
CHRIST ALONE
SCRIPTURE ALONE
GLORY TO GOD ALONE

The Council of Trent (6th Session, 1547AD) “ON JUSTIFICATION” CANON IX. If any one saith, that by faith alone the impious is justified; in such wise as to mean, that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to the obtaining the grace of Justification, and that it is not in any way necessary, that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema.

I’m sad to report (as if you don’t already know) that most of these types you’re talking about are being taught this behavior in their churches. They concentrate on “Thou shalt not” and accusingly point at Catholics. They are happy to believe that Catholics are on the hell express.

I’m glad the dominant themes of Catholicism are the two great commandments.
I know that a lot of protestants feel it is their mission to get Catholics to leave their faith. However, they should learn a little class. When a person says, “No thanks, I’m not interested in what you’re selling,” that means, “I’m not interested. I think you’re wrong. No, I’m not changing my mind. Go away.”

I don’t mind people coming here to debate ideas. I do mind being preached at by those who have no idea what they’re talking about. They’re only spitting out what they’ve been told by other Catholic-haters. If they’re going to preach at us, the least they could do is to come up with an original thought!

What every Roman Catholic should know…

Water baptism is not a requirement for salvation otherwise Paul would have been sent to baptize.

Symbols of the Holy Spirit

694 Water. The symbolism of water signifies the Holy Spirit’s action in Baptism, since after the invocation of the Holy Spirit it becomes the efficacious sacramental sign of new birth: just as the gestation of our first birth took place in water, so the water of Baptism truly signifies that our birth into the divine life is given to us in the Holy Spirit. As “by one Spirit we were all baptized,” so we are also “made to drink of one Spirit.” [1 Cor 12:13] Thus the Spirit is also personally the living water welling up from Christ crucified [Jn 19:34; 1 Jn 5:8] as its source and welling up in us to eternal life. [Cf. Jn 4:10-14; 738; Ex 17:1-6; Isa 55:1; Zech 14:8; 1 Cor 10:4; Rev 21:6; 22:17] 1218, 2652]

‘With my close ties, I could easily be under-cover and still very dangerously anti-Catholic.’

sure, you could. i’m sure there are hundreds of ‘undercover’ anticatholics in the church today. this fact doesn’t scare me, it assures me. as long as you’re doing the right thing, you’re going to have serious a fierce opposition in this world, often taking the form of ‘friend’.

fortunately, as catholic christians, we have nothing to hide, and nothing to fear. we are told to love our enemy. even if i was SURE that joe, next to me on the pew, is a subversive anticatholic, sent to learn all he can so he can misrepresent the church to all of his friends and potential converts, how would that change how i treat him? i would still love him. i would tell him the truth. i would pray for him. i would hope for the best - his ultimate salvation.

so - no fear. the gates of hell won’t prevail against the church - no matter what form those gates might take. 😉

I am not anti-Catholic. I’m in RCIA and ideologically I’ve flipped 180. In RCIA, it seems to me that the RCIA people take great pains to not be too Marian but rather be Christ-centric. I think they are going a little too far, because I presently love things about Mary (rosary, etc.). Right now, I think there is nothing wrong with kneeling in front of a statue of Mary and praying to her. Sure we don’t worship Mary. But somehow it means so much to me to pray to Mary.

Years ago (as a college student going to Campus Crusade for Christ meetings), I used to wonder when Nancy P__ was going to stop praying to Mary – now that Nancy was a Born Again Christian and no longer Catholic. I hope that Nancy and others will be in heaven too.

Could you please advise me where I should turn in my bible to read about praying to Mary and praying the rosary, I cant find it anywhere.

As a Christian I agree there are far to many Idols in the Catholic faith. The Cherubim you refer to here were behind the vail of the Holy of Holies so only the High priest could see them. They were there because God told Moses to put them there. Where and when did God say to erect a statue of Mary and Jesus. Help me if you can, I can’t find anything in the bible that says to build statues and erect them in the church, but I am no apologist.

Yeah, odd isn’t it? I can’t find the word Trinity in the Bible either. Much less anything in the Bible which clearly suggests that the Holy Spirit is of same essence as the Father and the Son. Can’t find much info about worshipping on Sunday either.

I don’t know why one can be opposed to praying the Rosary. Most of the prayers are directly from Scripture. The rosary is a way to meditate on the mysteries of the Incarnation. I see nothing wrong in doing that. 🙂

Keep looking after you start with Luke recounting the Annunciation… “Hail, full of grace”

Notice it is NOT “Hail, Mary,…”

Her unique position is addressed in a perfect past participle. That is, she has always been, is, and will continue to be full of grace. No one else is.

You might include “And all generations shall call her blessed”

Do you?
