You don’t approve of altar girls even the Pope is fine with them. So…you are more Catholic than the Pope!?
Hmmm…I never thought I’d actually have the opportunity to know someone like that.
The Pope doesn’t use them either.

I am not a Priest who can approve or not. I am a parent and will have my daughter sing in the choir.

They are not more special than the girls! We need both good, strong Catholic men AND women.
There’s no reason on Earth that the male notion of superiority should be reinforced, especially in God’s house, where there is no male or female!
Two words.
Female Priests.

Why does everyone seem to be against them so much?
There’s nothing wrong with female altar servers. They are just as valid and worthy as the male servers.
Some folks are against them.
As to why, here’s my guess:
If you’re male, you want to keep all the glory for yourselves and your own sex, or you may honestly consider the female the lesser of the species.
If you’re female, you may TWO reasons, one is to patronize the males by making them think that they’re MORE important than the girls, OR it’s possible that there are some women who love to imagine that men are, in fact, superior to them by virtue of their gender alone.
There is absolutely NO GOOD reason to deny a girl equality in this manner.
It’s cruel to teach your girls that she is less than a male, and it’s also foolish.
Some women are like that, though, and there’s nothing that will educate them otherwise.
The fortunate thing is that they have little influence in the greater society and sooner or later, their girls grow up and leave home.
I’m focusing on the mothers because actually, the majority of fathers that I know WANT their girls to be all that they CAN be.

The difference is that God calls us to serve with joy. Some girls would be a lot more joyful serving at mass than forced into a choir or just sitting with their family. Some boys would be a lot more joyful singing in a choir than forced to serve mass or just sitting with their family. God creates us with different personalities, affinities, and talents.
Our boys serve with joy at the altar.
Our girls serve with joy in the choir.

My daughter would not be anymore joyful if she served at the Altar. I just asked her. To her, it’s a novelty.

Why is being in the choir LESS than serving on the altar?

So is the Priest wrong to allow four year old boys to serve?
The Vatican left it up to them.
My niece memorized the entire book of James at TWO YEARS OLD.
Her dad taught it to her a verse a day and when she mastered it he awarded her a penny.
Therefore, there are probably SOME four year olds who could handle serving at Mass.
You have to learn to make decisions based on the individuals, not the general, one size fits all.

Not less than a male. Different than a male.

My son is not less than a female because he can’t be pregnant. He is different than a female, and he can’t be pregnant.

Why is being in the choir LESS than serving on the altar?
The reason is self evident, the priest always needs an altar server, or almost always.
The Choir is not present at all Masses. So it’s the difference between dessert and meat and potatos.
One is essential, the other is a delightful indulgence.

Right! And the four year olds in our parish handle it very well, according to our Wonderful Pastor (God Bless him and give him long life).

Your point is irrelevant to the discussion at hand.
We are not discussing biological differences here. You are correct that males cannot bear children, however.

I agree with you.

Only a bully would be made to “feel good” by someone else being made to feel inferior and unwanted.

The Church has need of both men and women to serve in many areas of lay ministry, but it has no need of bullies, in any capacity whatsoever.

yep, yep!
Agree totally!

Both are service to the Lord, as is a reader, an EMHC, an usher. One can have another Priest or Deacon assist, therefore an Altar server is not essential.
One is not less than the other.

I’d love to see that!
Do they have trouble with handling any of the equipment, I mean are there things that are too heavy for them?
Look for the pictures that Brendan posted.
Our boys are so holy, so serious.
Each is given his own job. From candles to bells, some are ready for bigger equipment sooner because of size, but all are guided by the older boys.

Okay, but in a way you validate my point, an assistant is needed at the Mass.
A choir is not.
Not a server. They are icing on the cake so to speak just as a choir is. It can be done with another Priest or Deacon. No servers at all.
