Where are your good, strong Catholic men in all these ministries? Shouldn’t your boys be involved in this too?😉
Where did you get the idea that they aren’t?

We had a busload riding with “Catholics in the Public Square” go to Washington for the Right to Life march last year.

How is it in your parish?

Good to hear it, Net - I’m just teasing ya with that one. Our parish…let’s see…we don’t have much in the way of social action protests. We might have had a meeting about the ice cream social that week. Maybe they took up a 2nd collection on Sunday for the poor. And we have this traveling Virgin statue that some people pray with. I sure do wish our old-timers would be more willing to open up the parish to younger parishioners and attempt to form a sense of community.

Honestly, the seniors will always be the seniors, When our parish was very small, one group ruled the roost.
As more and more young families came in, they started their own groups until now, Lord be praised, we are building on to have room for all of us.

We have the language barrier as well. I have found myself talking to someone only to realize they don’t speak English (only Slovak).
But you should see our dual language Holy Masses! Three choirs, packed church, and lots of socialization after. It’s great.

Do you have a procession with your Virgin statue? I miss that from Little Italy back home in Cleveland.

God Bless and Merry Christmas, CB.

This topic has probably been discussed in the past but I am new to the forum so I would like to discuss this topic. Why did the Vatican allow Alter Girls? I have been told that Pope John Paul II caved into pressure from feminist groups and went along with this only in times that when no other boys were around to serve? Any truth to this and if not can one site a source. Of course we all know that this isn’t the case and can attend Mass where the only Man on the alter is the Priest, while boys sit in the pews. I believe that this has had a very negative effect on Vocations and has only fueled the fire of why women can’t be priest. So now that I have opened the can of worms I would be interested to hear from both sides. If you think it is good to have alter girls let me know why. If you don’t think this is good I would also like to know why. 👍

Actually, it’s Altar Servers.

At my parish, thanks to our wonderful Pastor (May God Bless him and give him long life), it’s Altar Boys.

I predicted the outcome of what is happening in my diocese, once they started to allow girls to serve, and that is, girls would take over and boys would stop.

It became such a problem that the Bishop had to ask the parish priest to make an effort to recruit boys and not bother with the girls. However, it hasn’t seem to work. The stereotype that being an altar server is a girls job, has stuck.

Even in today’s world, boys won’t participate in activities which they see as a girl activity. So, as little boys saw more and more girls, less and less boys desired to become altar servers.

Regardless of whether the cause and effect you have seen is really cause and effect and not coinicidence, there’s an easy fix: Parents, preferably fathers, instruct their sons to volunteer as altar boys. It worked with my son.

Several months ago, the permanent deacon at my parish asked my son Christopher, “Would like to altar serve?”

My answer was, “Yes, he would.”

I took Christopher to altar server training on Saturday, and I make sure he gets to Mass on time to get vested. He now regularly wants to serve because I made it clear it was something he ought to do to please both God and me.

The problem isn’t altar girls. The problem is laissez-faire parenting.

So far after 4 responses to the thread we have established that #1. I can’t spell and 2# Altar girls is/was a bad idea?
Mlchance, in a perfect world where each Catholic family has a strong Catholic father leading his family Altar girls wouldn’t be an issue. But I don’t see every Catholic family being led by a strong father. In fact usually its the mother who is more Catholic than the father. Altar girls has had an impact on the U.S. church and not for the better in my opinion. But I want to hear from others. I want to hear from the person who thinks altar girls was a good move and their parish has benefited from this. Then tell me why. 👍

The Catholic paper, and my pastor said it was the reason.

For some it works. For others, getting boys to do something that they’ll end up being the butt of jokes in the schoolyard, doesn’t.

Really? Try to have your son ride a girls bike to school everyday. 😃

Alter is a common mistake here.
No sweat.

We have 250 Altar Boys at our parish. Five seminarians and two priests who were former Altar boys.
Do you think Altar Girls are a good idea or should we use my parish as a model?

By the way, we have Choir Girls.

I can tell you that my experience of being a short girl and riding a boys bike is bad too.
That pelvic bone slamming into the bar, Owwwie!

Does your parish allow Altar Girls, and if so how many do you have?

I agree with your post. My sons served until the Sunday before they went away to college. They are quite tall the tallest 6 5.
There are none to take their place so my husband did. This is only the case for our 7 a.m. Mass. I mentioned to Father one day that my sons use to serve and he said “I know all about your sons. I wondered why there were such long robes and was told about your sons.”
Until then I didn’t realize that the parish had special ordered robes for my sons.

And in every thread on this subject, I never see any actual proof for this assertion. It’s all just anecdote.

Face it: The problems with the Church now and always have been divided into two large categories. First, there are corrupt, incompetent, lazy priests causing scandal which weakens the Church’s moral authority. Second, there are parents following the example of those priests.

So, rather than sit around whining about how evil altar girls are because boys think girl-things are icky, or that boys who altar serve might get made fun of (O! The humanity!), or that there is a really loud but numerically insignificant group who think altar girls are priestesses in training, I prefer to be a bit more constructive.

Thus, I get my own house in order by the grace of God. I humbly suggest everyone else do the same thing.

:rotfl:

We don’t have to get our house in order. Our wonderful pastor (May God Bless him and grant him long life) already did. No Altar Girls.

When you parish is mentioned on EWTN for it’s piety, you can be happy like we are.
