"Blessed Assurance"

One of the most incredible life stories in Christian hymnology belongs to Blind Fanny Crosby (1820-1915) - the “Queen of Gospel Song Writers.” Literally a legend in her own time, she was blinded at age 6 weeks, later authoring over 8,000 hymns in addition to poetry, popular songs, cantatas, political songs, and patriotic songs, while memorizing the Holy Bible. By age 23 Crosby was addressing Congress and making friendships with presidents. In fact, she knew all the chief executives of her lifetime, especially Grover Cleveland…

Crosby was posthumously inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1975.

She has an incredible story and that is a beautiful hymn. Unfortunately, it is a little too much on the nose about assurance of salvation for Catholicism, in my opinion. But interestingly enough, I had just finished working up some of my favorite older hymns. Here are some I am playing:
It is Well With My Soul
Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus
He Leadeth Me. (my favorite)
 
I like most of the hymns except
  1. On eagles wings
  2. Let there be peace on earth
  3. Gather us in
  4. Be not afraid
  5. Halle Halle Halle

It’s also very Calvinist. Give the lyrics another reading.

If you look at a lot of older hymns through a theological lens, many of them read like systematic theologies. It’s why one hymn may be included in one collection and excluded from another.
 
My favorite hymn is the Ave Maria. I also like Ave Maris Stella and O Salutaris Hostia by Saint Thomas Aquinas.

I can see it now. I find a lot of ‘protestant-specific’ hymns tend to talk ABOUT rather than speak TO Our Lord in praise. Like that one, and also any other example… I Need Thee Every Hour, Nothing But the Blood of Jesus, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, etc…

heh. In the 70’s (when the Spirit was a’movin’), I inexplicably ended up in a folk Mass music group. 🎶 😎

Despite the seeming paradox of the music styles at that time - “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” written sixty years earlier remained a favorite of the congregation…

I still listen to it today! 😀
 
They’re also different in Greek, but without subtitles, how are we to know what they are? It could be a translation of the original or it could be new lyrics set to the same tune. That was beautiful, though. Thank you for sharing it.
