My most favs:

All Creatures of Our God and King
Holy Holy Holy
O Come O Come Emmanuel
Be Thou My Vision

Oh man, so many possibilities with this question.

I really like “The Cup of Life Outpoured” by Jim Cowan, and “Lord I need You” from Matt Maher. Also really like David Crowder’s take on “Praise God from Whom all blessings flow”.

Let’s go old school. This one isn’t exactly a sing-along, but oh the power! Psalm 51

Easy. City of God by Dan Schutte. Performed on the Organ with Trumpets and strings.

I do cry! Last time I heard this hymn was at my Bishop’s funeral. No organ at the church but they did have a full orchestra! He loved that piece of music - - so do I! I think this will be at my funeral as well.
For your enjoyment…
Oh my, that is lovely!! Thank you for sharing!

(Also coincidentally, I probably knew some of those students performing because they are performing at the Abbey at Benedictine College, where I went!! I was a junior at that time, although I would not have seen this performance live because i was studying abroad that semester!)

My favorite is Let all Mortal Flesh keep Silent. I first heard the Sisters sing it over thirty years ago It stayed with me They do not sing it as much as I would like, so I ask to have it.

There’s so many beautiful hymns and songs of Praise, but my current favourite is ’ O Sacred Head once wounded ’ It was written by a Catholic Saint. When I hear it I think of Jesus on the Cross
wearing the crown of thorns, with blood streaming down his beautiful face. It still makes me want to cry !

I was raised in the Ozarks at a time when it was very little developed. No TV until I was probably about 10. Even then, there literally was nothing on TV except in the evening, and then it was mostly locally-produced programs.

And so, most of the music I heard was on the radio. This is a REALLY fundamentalist protestant part of the country, and those hymns were on the radio a lot. Then along came the “Ozark Jubilee” on TV, which used the old repertoire, but added some that were not strictly “hillbilly”, but still pretty “country”.

And so I grew up liking a lot of those old protestant hymns, and still do. I’m in the church choir, and we sing some of them now and then.

At the same time, I attended a Catholic grade school in a town nearby, and learned some of the “Catholic” hymns and liked most of them.

Of the more “modern” creations by such folk as Marty Haugen and the St. Louis Jesuits, I could live without them for the rest of my life and never miss them.

Our choir director (who is also the organist and is really good) selects some “ethnic” hymns now and then, and two or three from Mozart, which I like a lot.

But I’ll also say that I really do like some of the eastern European hymns. I absolutely love “Da Ispolnasya” (sp?) and “Gospodi Pomiluj”, also “Lulaje-ze Jesuniu”.

I’m not too good at pasting, but I’ll put two of them on here if anybody wants to listen to them. You won’t regret it.

Here’s “Da Ispolnasya”. It’s an old Ruthenian hymn. It’s sung in English. The English name is “May our mouth be filled with your praise”. Beautiful!

And while there are a lot of versions of “Gospodi Pomiluj”, I like this one the best. The soloist is singing the “Confiteor” in Russian, while the chorus is singing “Lord Have Mercy”. In other words, it combines the Confiteor and the Kyrie together.

Try them out. I think you’ll love them!

The best hymn I’ve heard so far is “In Paradisum” with the Fauré arrangement

I love “Seek Ye First” accompanied by organ. That was the opening hymn for my wedding mass.

Dominican Magnificat is another favourite.

I also really like Gaudete as a Christmas hymn.

Question: what’s wrong with the theology? It’s very ‘broad’, just one of general praise.

I’ve always liked “At the Name of Jesus” by Jim Cowen.

A new one I’ve heard recently was “What a Beautiful Name It Is” by Hillsong.

I do like Dies Irae and would like it sung at my funeral.
