Agreed…‘Christ Be Our Light’ has been my favorite ever since I first heard it at the Easter Vigil many years ago…it’s sung after the baptisms, and it’s almost overwhelming…I haven’t missed a Vigil Mass in 30 years, and I’m still moved every time…

I’ve never heard that version, though I’ve heard several versions of the last two lines. In addition to the one that you quoted, I’ve heard “You reign now with Christ, our Redeemer and King” and “You reign now in heaven with Jesus our King.”

I’ve also never heard it referred to as “The Lourdes hymn”, just “Immaculate Mary”.

The Wikipedia article gives some information on the various versions. Apparently, different lyrics have been popular in different parts of the world.

 
According to that article, the Hears on Fire version was used until 1975, but apparently not everywhere.
(Was starting to think this was a false memory, only I’m not that creative)

Same here. I grew up hearing “Immaculate Mary” since the 1960s with a mom who had likely been singing it much longer than that, and I never heard or read those “desire” lyrics or heard my mom or anyone in her huge family mention different lyrics.

My heart swells and I nearly cry every time I hear “O God Beyond All Praising.” They often do it as the end of ordination Masses for deacons and priests in my diocese, and with the organ and the choir, it gets me every time.

I don’t recall raising any points on soteriology, this thread is about hymns.

I don’t support the theology of it anymore. But I can’t fully divorce myself from the joys of my youth, either. I always smile when I hear it done (which is rare, as it’s not used in my parish and reformed Protestants are a dwindling number).

The words of this piece are at odds with what Catholics believe. I’ve had many a priest state this, although the hymn tune is lovely and beloved.

I do cry! Last time I heard this hymn was at my Bishop’s funeral. No organ at the church but they did have a full orchestra! He loved that piece of music - - so do I! I think this will be at my funeral as well.

Oh, I just listened to this now and recognized the tune. Didn’t know the name. A beautiful hymn!
 
I haven’t thought about it enough to have designated a favorite, but “Maranatha Come Lord Jesus” is one that comes to mind.
 
An interesting sidebar, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence is a Catholic specific song that I had never heard. It was only after it kept being listed here as a favorite that I decided to look into it and add it to the hymns I play at Mass, though that one is good acapella.

The point is, that some of us have found this type of thread useful and not just entertaining.
 
Of the Father’s Love Begotten is a favorite a capella hymn as well.
