I’ve seen several threads on different forums about the cost of a church/coordinator. Below is a response that I have made before…Not everyone is like this, but I hope this puts it in perspective. I have been doing wedding music for 14 years, and been a music director for 5 1/2 years. If you could see what I have seen…phew.
This is not a matter of “paying for a sacrament” or “making money”.
First, lets compare this to most wedding expenses. What really matters here? It is somewhat of a justice issue. My pastor told me I should charge more for music services at weddings…so that it is valued more. When you compare the expense to so many other things…isn’t having a wedding in a church WORTH it? With utility costs itself, depending on the size of the church, the church may LOSE money on having the huge event there.
At my parish where I play music for weddings, having the in-house wedding coordinator is a God-send…they do so much…here is a list, and doesn’t cover everything:
They unlock, they take care of air conditioning/lights, moving kneelers, helping set up, keeping the decorations unobtrusive and in good taste, out of the communion aisles, make sure all the wedding party is in place (huge huge huge task) , they are “eyes” to keep things VALID (some wedding parties have problems with alcohol, or they don’t’ know how to respect the building, or the liturgical ceremony…“spit out the gum before going down the aisle please”), take care of photographers and florists (make sure photographers don’t take too long before or after, nor are intrusive to the ceremony), sometimes run rehearsals, run to the store for thread, diapers, pins, etc, and deal with bridezillas, make sure they aren’t taking offensive pics on the altar (hiking up skirts, silly photos, etc), making sure there is no writing on the groom’s shoes…keeping the groomsmen in line and not playing a stupid “where’s the ring?” game at the vows, etc etc etc. Making sure the food is cleaned up (the food that the wedding party was not supposed to have in the first place), listening for key phrases said before/after that might invalidate the wedding (it has happened), acting as sacristan (setting lectionary, vessels, etc), getting readers, gift bearers in line, helping any visiting musicians with sound system, keeping the guests respectful of the church (please take the phone call outside), etc, etc, etc
Yes, an in-house wedding coordinator from the church is worth their price.
