Where are all the large Catholic families?

I’m saying – large families are not necessarily an indicator of a healthy culture for children and women.
There are many large families in the Philippines. There are many women and children caught in the sex trades in the Philippines. Ergo, large families in the Philippines cause women and children to be caught in sex trades in the Philippines. Brilliant!!! 👍

As I said — large families – is not necessarily – and indicator --that the culture is a healthy one for children and women.

Did you even read what she wrote? She did not make any such connection. She just said that since there are large families in the philipines while there is still an unhealthy attitude there it is wrong to take large families as a necessary sign that a society has a healthy image of the family. She made no claim that having large families leads to unhealthy cultural attitudes.

I think she said macho Philippino men are the cause of the sex trade and homelessness in the Philippines:shrug:.

Walking_Home had evaded my responses… o:
We are all on different time zones with different obligations. She probably has something else that was more pressing to do for the past few hours instead of being stuck on this forum.

Your responses to what? Your posts also sound as though they assume that she is claiming that large families lead to unhealthy cultural situations which is far from what she actually said. I really didn’t understand why you reacted the way you did in the first place to be honest. 🤷

You do have a point there.
I’m very angry at how large Filipino families are looked at in the West.

Oh my goodness gentlemen!! Crescentinus mentioned that even non-Catholic families have large families. Walking Home mentioned that if it wasn’t faith that was a primary reason for large families (like with those that aren’t devoutly Catholic) that the machismo culture probably has something to do with still having large families.

Next, even though the Phillipines may have strong family values, it still has a high amount of sex trade going on, so even though family values are strong, the current culture is hostile to the well-being of women and children in certain areas.

Were her posts that difficult to figure out?

I think some of you were trying to extrapolate things that just weren’t there to begin with…

It is odd that Walking Home would enter a conversation about the possible reasons for larger families in the Philippines and change the topic to - “I’m saying – large families are not necessarily an indicator of a healthy culture for children and women.” Nobody had even made the assertion that large families were an indicator of a healthy culture for children and women (not that the assertion couldn’t be made). The interjection of the statement into the conversation seems to show that Walking Home might have a bias towards large families or cultures that foster them.

Okay, I can see where that might have caused confusion for some. I know Walking Home and she is a strong defender of abused and exploited women and children across the globe and here at home. Stick around the forum long enough and you’ll encounter some well-meaning folks that think getting back to a complete Pre-Vatican ll mindset (life in the 1950’s) is the cure for all of society’s ills. It’s not. Now, Crescentinus mentioned his Filipino culture having large families (a good thing) and it does have a strong Catholic culture, so it would be par for course that some would think that life in the Philippines is just perfect and they are free from the problems of modern Western society and it’s the model Catholic country. As Crescentinus has pointed out on here and many other of his posts, they have plenty of problems of their own. Walking Home was pointing out that even for the wonderful family situation for a good many of its people, there is an ugly underbelly that people tend to forget. I hope she doesn’t mind me answering some of these things for her, but she and I have communicated about domestic abuse issues and I have a good idea of where she stands on treatment of the poor and marginalized. I stand with her on that.

I have been to the Philippines - more than once and I have met Filipinas who spoke at length about the macho culture, about how its usual for husbands to have other women, all Catholic men. I have seen the poverty in Manila. I am told that staples like rice, oil and even soap are so very expensive. I do not think the Filipinos who post on CAF are among the large numbers of poor. Yes, I have seen how devout many people are but who is teaching the poor how to use NFP? Encouraging a large family will just keep them in poverty. Is it Christian to encourage the poor to have large families?

I agree that WH is very concerned about the abuse of women and children. Its not just about having the largest number of children who will all be Catholic, even the Church says that.

The Catholic Church requires all of us to be responsible, and the married life is not a responsible choice for everyone. For those who are married, the Church forbids contraception and requires all couples to be open to life. Would you encourage the people of the Phillipines to disregard the Church’s teaching in these matters?

To be Christian is to follow Christ and His Church. Following the Church’s teachings might not always be easy, but it is always our duty.

I do not believe-- severus68-- was saying couples use ABC --sterilize themselves --worse abort a child. The Church teaches responsible parenthood. A couple must take – various factors into consideration – health, poverty, etc. – and this is where NFP comes in.

Don’t mind at all --🙂

So please tell the improverished Filipinos that they should not get married. Why not teach people about NFP? The Church does not say we should not space our children, the Church does not say have babies after babies never mind the health of the mother, never mind the ability or not to feed the existing children.

I feel that this discussion about my people is an “either/or” than a “both/and” thing going on. It’s sad that it’s based more on stereotypes about my country and my people than anything else. The issue of poverty is not as easy to rationalize nor as simple as most of us even think! Linking it to large families simply because of their size does not take other factors into consideration!
