ooh, I forgot one more suggestion. Try the Cabela’s catalog. It’s one-stop shopping, for me–nice, practical clothes, fishing gear, comfortable, sensible shoes…
This is a late post, but I’m interested in the topic because my sister is always complaining that there are few stores that sell appropriate clothing for her preteen daughters. I have to agree. It’s appalling. But I have to disagree with the size issue brought up here. Sizes have become much, much BIGGER. A size 2 today would have been a size 8 or 10 in 1980. The designers have actually admitted that they have increased the measurements and changed sizes for American women. We are telling our youth that they are NOT fat, when the American population becomes more and more obese.(But I completely digress from the thread). I think we need to teach our daughters that clothes which are purposely revealing are simply TACKY, and our sons that those girls who make a point of showing their bare bellies and barely covered backsides are clueless about what is attractive or appropriate. Yes, it is an uncharitable route – but it works. As for stores that actually sell appropriate clothing, they’re out there, but you sure have to search for them.>What I find equally alarming is how sizes have changed. For example, a true size 6, say in the Juniors section, looks like a size 4. A size 8 looks like a size 6…and so on…it’s as though there is a subliminal message running through the fabric screaming at our youth…‘you’re fat if you’re a size 8.’ (
I agree, the sizing has gotten much more generous. This is a late post, but I’m interested in the topic because my sister is always complaining that there are few stores that sell appropriate clothing for her preteen daughters. Yes, I think they are lemmings. I can’t think of any other reason why otherwise lovely young girls would wear pants that are so low-rise that 1) they give the girls plumber-crack when they sit down or even bend over slightly, and 2) have to be worn so tightly that they give even the slimmest girls fat rolls or else they’ll fall down. Those pants are unbelievably unflattering, look ridiculously uncomfortable, and seem to be everywhere.I agree, the sizing has gotten much more generous.
And yes: a lot of the clothes are TACKY. I’m glad my oldest girl seems to like the more modest stuff–so far. My other girls are too young to care, and they just wear what I give them; so long as it’s comfortable. Why do you suppose that so many girls go for the tacky stuff? Are they all just like the lemmings following the one in front of them? Too me, the more revealing clothes are so uncomfortable. And who wants that kind of attention, anyway? Stupid.

I think that calico print long cape dresses are attractive.I think there needs to be a happy medium of looking too “sexy” and wearing calico print long cape dress…some of the mcall pattern are a perfect balance…It still makes a woman feel attractive without showing too much!
It used to be almost impossible to find pants that weren’t low rise, but the now it’s much more easy to find mid-rise pants. (I’m not talking about above the belly button pants, but like 2 inches below the belly button.)Yes, I think they are lemmings. Speaking as a 16 male, I am personally appalled by the clothes that are worn in the malls and at pools. My sister who is struggling with which category she will fall in asked me for what modesty is. It is what may be worn without members of the opposite sex from having impure thoughts race through his or her head as a result of seeing the person in said cloths. I respect women very much and wish that they would respect themselves enough not to wear inappropriate clothing.Men just dont respect women anymore, and it scares me to raise a young woman in todays world.
This is my experience as well… Thankfully 90% of what my 16 yo dd wants to wear is just fine… but I struggle more with stupid saying on t-shirts (finger lickin good, happy bunny, etc…) My dh has a big problem with what he calls “strappy” shoes… my dd is very good at walking in high heels and being of short stature, tends to like high heels… I think they are fine but dh has a fit. The other problem I see is in prom dresses… when did they become “slutwear?” Big cut outs on sides and between breasts!!! Slits up to crotch!!! I remember my prom dresses as covering so much more than they do now!It used to be almost impossible to find pants that weren’t low rise, but the now it’s much more easy to find mid-rise pants. I also love that shirts are finally made long enough! A few years ago shirts tended to be MUCH shorter. Although shirts do seem to be low-cut more often, but it’s so easy to just put a cami on underneath.
