Lorarose:
As the mother of daughters and sons I’ve given this problem quite alot of thought.
Many good points have been made concerning girls and their desire to please - they often don’t understand the image they are presenting.

But I also have a big problem with the male side of this issue also.
Girls have picked up a message they have received loud and clear from many males …

You are not worthy unless you are HOT!
Many women feel their worth is based on how attractive they are to men, and I think that is a big factor in the stye of dress we are seeing these days.
Yep, it was the chubby little girls like me who put thier noses in books and didn’t pay any attention to the guys - and didnt’ have that problem. LOL. There comes a point where you just give up! I think that is one of the reasons girls feel so bad about themselves, that they are constantly feeling like they have to compete with other girls. You should try to be the best you can be, but not just to win some shallow jerk! I wish I had realized back then that it didn’t matter.

What your pappa always told you is true all along. “Guys who will want you for your looks alone are not worth having. A great guy will love you no matter your shape, color or size.”

I think the only way I might be put off by a man’s appearance is if a guy just didn’t care about himself enough to be hygenic and all. I married the neatest neat freak I could find …and I still have to peel his socks off the bathroom floor occasionally!

I just got this email today - feel free to copy and distribute!!!

Our Lady Speaks about Modesty

“the sins which bring most souls to hell are the sins of the flesh. Certain fashions are going to be introduced which will offend Our Lord very much… the Church has no fashions; Our Lord is always the same…” Our Lady of Fatima - 1917

The Church speaks about Modesty

To say that "…modesty is a matter of custom" is just as wrong as to say that, “…honesty is a matter of custom.”

Pope Pius XII
Code:
Standards of Modesty in Dress
Imprimatur dated Sept. 24, 1956

“A dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers breadth under the pit of the throat; which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows; and scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knees. Furthermore, dresses of transparent materials are improper.”

The Cardinal Vicar of Pius XII
Code:
"The good of our soul is more important than that of our body; and we have to prefer the spiritual welfare of our neighbor to our bodily comforts. If a certain kind of dress constitutes a grave and proximate occasion of sin, and endangers the salvation of your soul and others, it is your duty to give it up. O Christian mothers, if you knew what a future of anxieties and perils, of ill-guarded shame you prepare for your sons and daughters, imprudently getting them accustomed to live scantily dressed and making them lose the sense of modesty, you would be ashamed of yourselves and you would dread the harm you are making of yourselves, the harm which you are causing these children, whom Heaven has entrusted to you to be brought up as Christians."
Pius XII to Catholic Young Women’s Groups of Italy

**Pope Benedict XV has taught very clearly about modesty in an encyclical letter (Sacra Propediem, 1921), commemorating the 7th centenary of the founding of the Franciscan Third Order.
**

“One can not sufficiently deplore the blindness of so many women of every age and station. Made foolish by a desire to please, they do not see to what degree the indecency of their clothing shocks every honest man and offends God. Most of them would formerly have blushed for such apparel as for a grave fault against Christian modesty. Now it does not suffice to exhibit themselves on public thoroughfares; they do not fear to cross the threshold of churches, to assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and even to bear the seducing food of shameful passions to the Eucharistic Table, where one receives the Heavenly Author of Purity.”

1930 Letter of the Congregation of the Council

By virtue of the supreme apostolate which he wields over the Universal Church by Divine Will, our Most Holy Father Pope Pius XI has never ceased to inculcate, both verbally and by his writings, the words of St. Paul (1 Tim. xi,9-10), namely, “Women … adorning themselves with modesty and sobriety … and professing godliness with good works.”

Very often, when occasion arose, the same Supreme Pontiff condemned emphatically the immodest fashion of dress adopted by Catholic women and girls – which fashion not only offends the dignity of women and against her adornment, but conduces to the temporal ruin of the women and girls, and, what is still worse, to their eternal ruin, miserably dragging down others in their fall. It is not surprising, therefore, that all Bishops and other ordinaries, as is the duty of ministers of Christ, should in their own dioceses have unanimously opposed their depraved licentiousness and promiscuity of manners, often bearing with fortitude the derision and mockery leveled against them for this cause.

**Therefore this Sacred Council, which watches over the discipline of clergy and people, while cordially commending the action of the Venerable Bishops, most emphatically exhorts them to persevere in their attitude and increase their activities insofar as their strength permits, in order that this unwholesome disease be definitely uprooted from human society.

In order to facilitate the desired effect, this Sacred Congregation, by the mandate of the Most Holy Father, has decreed as follows:

In order to facilitate the desired effect, this Sacred Congregation, by the mandate of the Most Holy Father, has decreed as follows:

**Exhortation to Those in Authority
**

1. The parish priest, and especially the preacher, when occasion arises, should, according to the words of the Apostle Paul (2 Tim. iv, 2), insist, argue exhort and command that feminine garb be based on modesty and womanly ornament be a defense of virtue. Let them likewise admonish parents to cause their daughters to cease wearing indecorous dress.
  1. Parents, conscious of their grave obligations toward the education, especially religious and moral, to their offspring, should see to it that their daughters are solidly instructed, from earliest childhood, in Christian doctrine; and they themselves should assiduously inculcate in their souls, by word and example, love for the virtues of modesty and chastity; and since their family should follow the example of the Holy Family, they must rule in such a manner that all its members, reared within the walls of the home, should find reason and incentive to love and preserve modesty.
  2. Let parents keep their daughters away from public gymnastic games and contests; but if their daughters are compelled to attend such exhibitions, let them see that they are fully and modestly dressed. Let them never permit their daughters to don immodest garb.
  3. Superioresses and teachers in schools for girls must do their utmost to instill love of modesty in the hearts of maidens confided to their care and urge them to dress modestly.
5.** Said Superioresses and teachers must not receive in their colleges and schools immodestly dressed girls, and should not even make an exception in the case of mothers of pupils. If, after being admitted, girls persist in dressing immodestly, such pupils should be dismissed.
**
  1. **Nuns, in compliance with the Letter dated August 23, 1928, by the Sacred Congregation of Religious, must not receive in their colleges, schools, oratories or recreation grounds, or, if once admitted, tolerate girls who are not dressed with Christian modesty; said Nuns, in addition, should do their utmost so that love for holy chastity and Christian modesty may become deeply rooted in the hearts of their pupils.

7. It is desirable that pious organizations of women be founded, which by their counsel, example and propaganda should combat the wearing of apparel unsuited to Christian modesty, and should promote purity of customs and modesty of dress.
  1. In the pious associations of women those who dress immodestly should not be admitted to membership; but if, perchance, they are received, and after having been admitted, fall again into their error, they should be dismissed forthwith.
9. Maidens and women dressed immodestly are to be debarred from Holy Communion and from acting as sponsors at the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation; further, if the offense be extreme, they may even be forbidden to enter the church.

God’s law comes through the church with no “if’s, and’s or but’s”. Are we with Him or do we make excuses for ourselves? Are we truly Catholic or truly "protest"ant?

Adios,

Yeah…that all sounds okay except the part about not wearing shirts that don’t cover your arm up to the elbow. That sounds extreme to say the least when it is 90+ degrees out.

Why don’t they just make us wear viels over our faces too, while thier at it.

That’s why I tell my girls, (ages 12 and 9) “Keep the bar high. Any man that will not rise to that level, is not worth marrying.”

These are simply the infallable teachings of the church. We follow them or we sin.

Christ suffered 3 hours on the cross after having been beaten bloody, and he was innocent.

Have you not seen the full habit of the Carmelite nuns? We have a convent of Carmelites in Alhambra, CA, which hits about 100 degrees on many days during the summer.

Anything cotton, and loose, is comfortable in the summer. And a shirt that has sleeves 4 or 5 inches shorter is not going to make much of a difference.

Pray and do penance.
God Bless,
Angel.

Modesty is not practriced in this day and age. When an employee feels that s/he needs to dress in a more modest way many employers veto that desire. This situation can force an employee to follow GOD or the company. :banghead: Go figure.

Angels that is not an infallible teaching of the church. It is what Pope Pius XII opinion. It is not bad but does not need to be followed. I am not saying to dress imodest. One can still dress modestly without following Pius XII instructions. Read the section in the Cathecism on modesty.

Actually, up until I turned 18 this was how I dressed. My shorts pretty much went to my knees and my shirts went to my elbows. This was not because of religion, I was just a shy girl who didn’t want that kind of attention.

It seems the styles today are much different from when I was younger, I grew up in the 80’s when baggy clothes for women were the rage. Women looked like linebackers back then heh

Young ladies today adopt the clothing of celebrities and most of them are very tiny clothing. The most appalling besides the dress are the words kids use, kids outside and kids on tv calling each other “hot”, am I the only one who finds this incredibly inappropriate? A young girl on a clothing commercial I just saw said she wanted to be a diva and be hot. She couldn’t have been more then 13 years old.

Kids today try to grow up so fast but then when they are 30 they are going to be regretting it big time.

I don’t feel I dress immodestly at all, but I am not going to church in long sleeves. I have to walk a long ways to get thier. If I could even find a shirt with long sleeves that wasn’t of a thick material, I probably couldn’t afford it anyway.
