Where would Martin Luther go to church if he came back today?

A lot of folks mellow with age. Plus… the state of the Church has changed a whole lot in 500 years. I think Luther would be amazed in some ways, and disappointed in others.

Plus… he could take lithium for his bipolar disorder. Who knows what he’d be like? 🙂

I don’t think so. My understanding is that the whole notion of indulgences contradicts the spirit of Holy Orthodoxy.

No where. He’d go off and start his own…again! Maybe he’d call it, “the Lutheran, no really, the Lutheran, I really mean Lutheran, just Lutheran but really Lutheran Church,” this time. Heh. 😉

And just for the record, I ain’t never heard of no Slapout, Alabama. Must be one o’ them new-fangled urbane communities I done heard so much about. 😉
 
He would stay with the Church he loved even then except for the widespread use of indulgences.
 
I believe it was the abuse, not the use, of indulgences that Luther found so offensive. But I could be wrong. In general he seems to have begun to point out some actual abuses, as he saw them. But rather quickly, seems to me, his main problem turned into-- whatta surprise-- a problem with authority.

And ain’t that the way it usually goes? Nobody wants nobody else to tell ‘em nuthin’. Nope, not a dang thing. Ain’t no different now than it was then. Or ever, for that matter. Adam and Eve had the same problem and so did Lucifer. Adam and Eve only had one rule, one, and they couldn’t even keep that. Oy. And Lucifer knew God personally! What’s his excuse, huh? Oy ve. 😉
 
he would just walk into an average Catholic parish, be appalled and run in panic to find the TLM or EF. he would try to start a conversation with average Catholics about indulgences and be shocked to learn none of them even know that it is.

I think an even more intriguing question is: Would ML accept the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification as a breakthrough, or as baloney.

After reviewing his works and their implications in history, I think Luther will squirm with some painful regrets.
Some of them:
  • Regret his reliance on German politicians who pretended to protect him but in reality used his controversial works to gain political mileage with the rulers that be.
  • Regret bequething his theology to defrocked clerics who mutilated it to fit their tastes and thirst for heresy.
  • Regret giving birth to a theology that allows abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage, etc.
Were he to see these in 21st century, he will get touch with the Vatican Curia dealing with heresy.
 
Well…I’d imagine if Martin Luther came back from the dead, he’d have to first figure out how to get outta his grave.
