THE old RSV is in a great format published by Oxford unfortunately it doesn’t have the catholic tweaking of the RSVCE but you could read it without getting a headache. Ignatius really could learn a thing from Oxford and other protestant publishing houses on how to print a Bible.

I voted Douay Rheims for the faithful literal translation. I have just purchased the most recent book of the Navarre Bible series, and the commentaries are wonderful! I have also downloaded a copy of e-Sword: e-sword.net/. I have the Douay Rheims, King James, and Latin Vulgate installed so I can compare translations quickly. This is a free program. Now I just wish I had more time to brush up on my Latin…

Apparantly, Oxford University Press will be releasing an edition of the RSV-CE on October 30 (though it will be a compact edition).

my favorite is the douay-rhiems translation, but a very interesting read is “A Practical Guide to the Holy Scripture”. it is by Bishop Knecht. it is written for students and has practical applications. it is worth reading. it is available through TAN publishers.

Does anyone know anything about the collegiate(not sure the exact name) commentaries, a friend of mine recommended them to me but I have not heard anything about them. I want to make sure I have commentaries that are good and go along with the teachings of the church, none of that modern or new age stuff, also what does anyone think of a practical commentary for scriputures I know TAN books just put that out and its also on EWTN’s website.

God Bless You All,

Billy Graham was asked this question, and his answer was:

“The one you read.”

I think there is alot of wisdom in that. However, here is a quick test to see if a translation is any good: read Genesis 3:15.

A good translation uses feminine pronouns – she and her – implying that the woman is the person being spoken of in this part of the verse. All modern translations use masculine pronouns – he and his – implying that the seed of the woman is the of that part of the verse.

My favorite translation? The New American Bible; St. Josephs’ Edition. It is the work of both Catholic and Protestant scholars using the most ancient manuscripts available. It contains the Constitution on Divine Revelation and other goodies. The most important reason is that my Bible is great is that it was a gift from my wife, a convert:)

Terrific I am excited I can throw out my badly printed Ignatius RSVCE and replace it with a soft leather high quality Oxford Bible.
Someone has been reading my request.
Thanks be to God. If you are in the market for the RSVCE wait for this one. Thanks for the info.

Church Militant:
Douay-Rheims for me, but I’ve got NAB, Jerusalem Bible.

**You sound like me…I have one of just about everything…except the DR. **

I grew up with the Kings James Version…and still hear those words in my head when I remember scripture. My favorite Bible is the RSV, because it is the most accurate, and is the most like the KJV.

Catholic Heart

I own The Living Catholic Bible which was easy to read but, now that I have learned it is paraphrased, I am going to buy a new Bible I was thinking either Douay-Rheims (although words like betwixt scare me a bit) or the RSV-CE, it appears these two seem to be the most accurate and least tampered with in terms of modernistic and liberal translation.

(The above was in reply to a question about which version was the Catholic Youth Bible.)

My son’s **Catholic Youth Bible **is Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition, NOT NAB. Here is the Amazon link:

While I voted for the RSV-CE, for study I prefer the Navarre – great commentary.

the Catholic youth bible originally was the NEW revised standard version (with inclusive language), now also comes in NAB version, but most of the study guides and resources are geared toward the original

I have both. The RSV-CE is an easier read, but the Douai-Rheims (the Challoner revision I have) has notes by Bishop Challoner (the man who revised it in the 18th century), which are unabashedly Catholic.

I put Duoay & RSVCE!

I also have a New American Bible, & I know it’s used in the Lectionary. However, I feel the NAB in trying to make the Bible readable has lost much of it’s poetry. The words & verses just aren’t as beautiful & don’t touch my heart especially Psalms.

For over 50 years I bounced back and for between Bibles. But last year I spent $99.95 for a two volume Douay-Rheims Bible. I love it.

Why? I always wanted to get as close to the Vugate as I could. I am not interested in “modernism”. The Dousy - Rheims Bible was translated from the Vulgate.

That wouldn’t happen to be a red covered Haydock Bible? I had an Orthodox acquaintance that had one of those. It was a Douai Bible, but with copious notes by a priest named Haydock. I saw it advertised on a Catholic books website for $110.
I bought a CD-ROM version for $60 (one disk). A bit pricey, but still worth it.

In nomine Jesu I offer you all His Peace,

I have RSV-CE Holy Bible by Ignatius Press. I love it and I read all the time but I also am a great admirer of the Douay-Rheims Bible as well and read it from a website for free.

I’m looking to purchase a Haydock Douay-Rheims in the near future (not to mention my birthday coming up 👍 )

The lowest price I could find on the net was $88 US (with free shipping) here.

At this link, you can find it for $74.95 (though I do not know how much the shipping would be):

Haydock Bible

New American all the way. But I did hear that there were a few issues with the translation (via This Rock Magazine). Could anyone give me a link to help me understand these “issues”?
