Perhaps we should begin another thread: 'which denominations are more hostile to people of any faith but their own?"
Besides a few denominations which don’t allow the faithful to even enter another mans House of God, Even to watch a cousin or child marry, it is rarely the denomination or religious group by rather the individual believer who has taken a fanatical stance. Since he is so sure that his “faith” is the absolute “truth” and all who do not accept what he believes are in some way mentally defective. Because otherwise they will accept everything that he does, on more then just faith.

The truth is always pastoral. I pray that your eyes will one day be opened.
the truth is.

But what if, in some picketing action, or pamphlet produced, you are WRONG?

that is, what if you ‘accuse’ another faith of believing something they do not, or what if you present their beliefs in the most unflattering way possible–on purpose?

What if you interfere with their freedom of religion?

Is that “pastoral” and 'truth?"

  1. there is a great deal of difference between restricting admission to one’s own house…and invading and disparaging another’s.
  2. Being a fanatic does NOT necessarily mean that he is antithetical to all other faiths, or that he will go out and actively campaign against any other faith. Quite a high proportion do, but that’s not a requirement.
  3. I have found that those people who do picket, attack and otherwise disparage the beliefs of another faith are supported, even encouraged, to do so by the belief system they espouse; most of them have publications by that belief system to distribute, for instance.
I haven’t run into many belief systems that discourage their members from being anti-somebody else, and most of 'em actively support it with books, pamphlets, flyers, coaching and active organization.

There is no hostility in stating the truth. The truth may hurt but it is not being hostile to state it.

Here’s a parable for you:

there was once a man who, knowing that a flood was coming, went about among the people with a lantern to guide them to high ground.

However, he became impatient with holding the lantern, lighting the path and calling for people to follow him, so he took an ax and began chopping down the houses of the people in the village, figuring that if they had no roof to rest under, they would then have no choice but to follow him.

The problem was, he found out that he couldn’t hold the lantern and work the ax at the same time; so he put the light down and worked with his ax to demolish as many houses as he could. He was quite successful; so much so that he forgot about the lantern he had set down, and when the flood came he was trapped with all the villagers who had neither walls to hold the waters back, nor light to lead them away.

Think about it.

But no one here is hacking anyone’s house to get them to move. More like holding the light and carrying a PA system to get to as many people as they can.

But people are afraid of the truth so complained about the brightness of the lamp and the noise from the PA system.

Parable does not apply.

Yes, we get that a lot. People telling us what we believe rather than finding out what we actually believe.

Here is a quote from Peter Kreeft’s conversion story : But if Catholic dogma contradicted Scripture or itself at any point, I could not believe it. I explored all the cases of claimed contradiction and found each to be a Protestant misunderstanding

And who is interfering with anyone’s freedom of religion. We may scream at the top of our lungs to say “Hey, watch out you are about to crash” but if people persist on ignoring the warning there is not much we can do.

Take any anti-[insert belief system here] (I believe I’m safe here, because antis work the same way no matter who the target is)

In it you will find:

a list of beliefs that the target faith has (you won’t ever find such a list that is bang on accurate; there will always be a strawman in there somewhere, either an honest error or deliberate misstatement–and it generally is deliberate).

a list of arguments against those beliefs.

…and not one line, not one word, explaining what the targets should believe instead. If there is some sort of comparison between the targets and whatever it is that the pamphlet author believes, it will be "[insert system here] believes this and we don’t.’ He will define his beliefs by the target. Every time.

He’s using the ax to destroy the target. Once he has done that, then what? Where do they go from there?

The ax wielder has lost the lantern, the anti has lost his own truth.

That is classic; people telling you what you believe, and then attacking that…they don’t really want to know what your beliefs actually are. That would, perhaps, make them rethink the hatred…and perhaps even make them think.

Can’t have that.

I am speaking of matters further afield than this forum. For instance, when I went down to the Temple in LA a month or so ago I could not get past the picketers.

Everytime I visit Temple Square in SLC I have to walk past people with signs making derogatory comments about my faith; people waving Temple garments in the air, or shouting anti-Mormon—stuff—using those loud speakers.

Tell me: just how likely is it that these people are actually achieving the goals they CLAIM they are aiming for?

I must say that I am appauled to learn that people would do such a thing. Surely there is tolerance of religion?

🙂

If we are talking about the protestors outside the Los Angeles Temple then those were gay activist who blame the LDS and their money because California once again said marriage is to between one man and one woman.

And no they don’t have any tolerance for any faith. However they do have the young on their side and the next time this comes up for election I think the people will join the Supreme Court Justices of the various states and America will join Europe and Canada on this issue and the picketers will disappear with their victory.

Cinette?

Surely ‘tolerance of religion’ is in such short supply that the founding fathers had to make it a constitutional matter–and even that didn’t work.

Aaahh. But here’s the weakness in that parable. You are assuming that there is no other belief system to replace what they have lost.

Here is a better parable.

You have this ginormous castle and the king says everyone should live in it because He built this to house every single one in His kingdom. But some had disagreements with the current chief-in-charge of the castle and decided to pitch tents on the castle grounds. The king said to the chief-in-charge go after those living in tents and tell them to come home. It is not safe there. If a hurricane comes what will happen to them. But the tent dwellers insist on living in the tent.

So we go over there saying, look this tent is made of very unsafe material. It is unstable and the wolves could easily huff and puff and blow your tent down. Come home to the castle. It is made of solid brick and re-inforced steel, the wolf will die of exhaustion before the castle will even come close to collapsing from its puffing. Its nice and warm and the king and your brothers and sisters are waiting for you. As a matter of fact the king has sent us to come and bring you back home.

Some realize the wisdom of this and come home but some still cling to the notion that their piece of stick and cloth for a home is indeed it. But we never tire calling out to them. As a matter of fact, some have died in the process of calling out to these lost souls because they cannot just abandon their brothers who insisted on clinging to the tent when the hurricane came.

Tolerance of religion does not mean that all faiths are equal because they are not. All it means is that you cannot persecute someone for their beliefs. It is still however, encumbent upon you to show them the light.

Regarding the Temple protestors, this was pure political harassment, and should have resulted in 911 being called, if it did not.
that is, what if you ‘accuse’ another faith of believing something they do not, or what if you present their beliefs in the most unflattering way possible–on purpose?
In the first case, that person would be mistaken or ignorant. The second case, for Catholics, is the sin of deception, which must be confessed as it separates us from God. It has its origin in the evil one, who is “a liar and the father of lies”
What if you interfere with their freedom of religion?
Call 911. That’s what it’s there for. Maybe you could post on a gay rights forum, to get your point across to them, some of the most intolerant on earth. If anyone on earth knows persecution, it is the Catholic Church. And, there’s much more to come, especially in the next four years.

Is that “pastoral” and 'truth?"Only the truth of Jesus Christ is the truth, and it is 100% pastoral. Those who do not have the truth never like to hear the plain, unvarnished truth. The evil one turns them against it. The grace of God returns them to it.
