Does anyone else see the supreme irony of this?

What is troubling to me is those who call themselves Catholic and go through the motion of going to Sunday Mass, and then are unreasonably careless with their words and actions toward others. **They might even get all self-righteous **and question whether others are Catholic because they don’t like something the other person said. The outside is all shine, and the inside not so shiny. Like a hypocrite."

Get this straight, calling you on your generalization about Protestants IN NO WAY questions whether you are Catholic or not.

It was not a charitable or true statement, whether or not it was tongue-in-cheek. The fact is that two people, possibly three or more, have so far questioned whether I am Catholic.

So, if there is irony, it is that, even after taking the time to post links to try to back-up your generalization, you’d rather suggest that I’m being self-righteous.

Fact is, that I have not questioned whether anyone else here is Catholic or not. I might disagree with what is said, and be disappointed in the uncharitableness of some of the post, however, I have no right to question whether you or anyone else is Catholic, and will assume to give the benefit of the doubt, no how bad of a day any of us have here.

So, to all those who have questioned whether I am Catholic, don’t worry about it, no worries. And I hope God bless you each more and more. Sometimes I do wonder, however you won’t see me ask (except the once to make a point by turning the question back on the original questioner, not to really ask), that’s between you and God.

Michael

The one doctrine that unifies them all is the doctrine that the Catholic Church is the spawn of satan.😃
Ah, the “big grin”, much more appropriate than the smile or wink. Gets the point across as intended? Sort of like, look what I got away with saying, he he he…?

No I didnt. I wrote it in reference to "They might even get all self-righteous ". And note I bolded it so that everyone (exept of course for you , evidently) would know what i was talking about.

Well, if you look at your post #237, you certainly did include the entire quote. And in my reply post #242 I highlighted the exact same words you did, so evidently I did know what you were talking about. So how in the world can you say “No I didn’t” or “except of course for you, evidently”?

You might be Catholic, but the words coming out of your posts see so irrational. Just what we need, Catholics with irrational words and uncharitable generalizations about Protestants, tongue-in-cheek of course. 😃

Michael,

You are listed as a Catholic. Apparently, your experience has been different from mine.

Lots of Catholics on this site seem to take up position of ‘the other side’. Calling Catholics 'careless with their words and actions", in their eyes might be justified. They are just, in their experience, calling a spade a spade.

Yes, let’s call for ecumenism, and for charity, but also let’s not be naive.

As, for me, as a Catholic, I have experienced that kind of criticism of Catholicism, where our church is called "the w**** of Babylon’, or worse, and I am not talking about just reading the works of Martin Luther.

I think you are overly sensitive to what criticism there might be towards some non-Catholics who are less than kind to us, or ecumenical. Calling for prayer and forgiveness for insults is part of our Christian calling.

We are a threat to some Christians’ sense of serenity and peace. Accept it for what it is. And pray for those who call us names.

Phil 4:4-9
“Therefore, my beloved brethren whom I long to see, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord, my beloved. I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to live in harmony in the Lord. Indeed, true companion, I ask you also to help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement also and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”

God’s peace be with you,

Michael,

mgrfin, I am listed as Catholic because I am Catholic. To list otherwise would be false witness on my part. Not sure we have different experience. I have had friends tell me the Church is the w******* as well, and have had friendships split over that more than one. However, I’d rather lose a friendship than passively permit that type of false witness. And I’d be a hypocrit to passively permit or be silent when their appears to be false witness in the other direction. We are not to play favorites with our charity and respect for others.

Lots of Catholics on this site seem to take up position of ‘the other side’. Calling Catholics 'careless with their words and actions", in their eyes might be justified. They are just, in their experience, calling a spade a spade.

I don’t really care which side is careless with their words, or appears to false witness, even jokingly. Allowing it will only hinder others from seeing the beauty of the Catholic faith.

Yes, let’s call for ecumenism, and for charity, but also let’s not be naive.

Yes, let’s not be naive, or partial.

As, for me, as a Catholic, I have experienced that kind of criticism of Catholicism, where our church is called "the w**** of Babylon’, or worse, and I am not talking about just reading the works of Martin Luther.

Me too, not very pleasant.

I think you are overly sensitive to what criticism there might be towards some non-Catholics who are less than kind to us, or ecumenical. Calling for prayer and forgiveness for insults is part of our Christian calling.

It doesn’t matter if others are less than kind to us, we are not to respond uncharitably. As it is, who was less than kind to Catholics in this thread that deserved the comment "The one doctrine that unifies them all is the doctrine that the Catholic Church is the spawn of satan.😃 Notice the big grin?

We are a threat to some Christians’ sense of serenity and peace. Accept it for what it is. And pray for those who call us names.

The Catholic faith is one of faith, hope, and love. We are not a threat to other’s sense of serenity and peace, unless what they see does not reflect our Catholic faith. I would imaging even jokingly suggesting that “The one doctrine that unifies them all is the doctrine that the Catholic Church is the spawn of satan.” would disturb many Protestants, and would hope it would disturb most Catholics to hear such a statement.

BTW-there are several other unifying factors for Protestants

The belief that all jews and Catholics are going to hell

The belief that all Catholics are idol worshipers.

The belief that the Pope is the Anti-Christ

The belief that Catholics are cannibals

Ill add some more tomorrow.

Don’t forget the smiley face, or big grin, someone might take you seriously. Does that post offend any Catholics or Protestants? I don’t want to be “oversensitive”

I was dead serious. I didnt want to deny you the opportunity for more righteous outrage.

Don’t need outrage to recognize as post as uncharitable. So which is it, your joking with a big grin, or dead serious?

Really? How so?
I just saw this. Yes Baptists are Protestant. The earliest Baptist congregations were established by John Smyth in Holland and Thomas Helwys in England in the 1600’s.

Smyth and his followers were part of the English Separatists (a Protestant group that felt that separation from the Church of England was necessary). This group fled to Holland from persecution in England. There they were influenced by the continental Anabaptists and thus adopted the practice of baptism being exclusive for adults. Also the first distinctively Baptist beliefs began to develop in this group.

Thomas Helwys led a small group of these Baptists in the creation of the 27 article confession which established their belief system. This group left Holland and established a Church in England in order fight religious persecution. This Baptist group was Armenian in core theology. They became known as the General Baptists.

The first truly Calvinist Baptist Church was created by a group of Puritans who blended Baptist and Calvinist values. This became the Particular Baptists.

The idea that Baptists are not Protestant comes from a myth that the Baptist Church was itself the visible Church established by Christ. This view holds that one can draw a never ending line of succession from either independently appearing churches or following a chain of churches each succeeding the other. The latter view is called Landmarkism (which you may have heard of).

What is interesting about Landmarkism is the churches it claims are part of the unbroken succession of Christ established Baptist Churches. These churches include: Montanists, Novatianists, Donatists, Paulicians, Albigensians, Catharists and Waldenses.

Today most Baptists completely disregard the above as it is of course historically and theologically indefensible. Still there are groups that continue to hold to Landmarkism, and of course there are individuals who like the idea. Also there are some individuals who have picked up on pieces of this concept and thus have an understanding that Baptists aren’t supposed to be Protestant but they may not know the details as to why.

Guys what happened to this thread? It was kind of interesting at first and now it seems to be angry for no reason?

Whenever we discuss Protestant doctrine derailers leap into the fray.
Amen, and Amen, and Amen to that.

Whenever we get something going, the non-Catholics on the scene seem to throw up all kinds of roadblocks.

Let us get back on tread, and stop the throwing out your favorite scriptural passage as a roadblock.

Michael,

I think you are judging Catholics. This is God’s job, not yours.

Encourage your Protestant friends to come to the site to share their views.

What other Catholics are doing on Sunday, in their pews, with their shinny faces, IS between them and God.

Please, lets move on.

…Though admittedly there are some uniquely-Protestant doctrines out there it still seems like all that is universally shared is that which is shared with Catholicism…
Could you step me through that world-changing insight please? It attracts me but I do not understand it fully. Thank you.🙂
