Which is better: Mormonism or Islam? And why?
If you had a “reading Shakespeare trumps religion” option, I’d vote. As of now, I abstain. 😃

Mormonism is better for me. Islam is better for the Muslims. The Roman Catholic Church is better for the Catholics. If there is a God (which I doubt) he made us different for a purpose.

For me a religion is just as good as the kind of communities it produce. And obviously mormon communities are way better than muslim communities. Mormon communities are far more tolerant and progressive than muslim ones. I vote for the LDS.

On the negative sides I’d prefer polygamist camps over jihadist camps any day.

I don’t know that that’s true, really. Though I do see the point you’re trying to make.

I think both Mormons and Muslims have a long way to go toward tolerance of other people. I like Muslims who have immigrated to the west, for probably the same reasons I like Mormons who have left Utah (as I have). They tend to see their fellow men and women as individuals, rather than outsiders to be converted, or bothered when they will not convert.

That’s just my take on it all.

What kinds of biases and prejudices do mormon communities have? And how strong are these biases?

Anybody? 🤷

Sorry. I just got back from Friday prayers at the local masjid. I stopped short of converting, but it was as interesting as my recent visit to a Catholic Easter Mass, in its own way.

In answer to your question: my generation hated the FLDS types (the polygamists, who dress like every day is a square dance) the most fervently. This was followed closely by Roman Catholics, Freemasons, people who listened to AC/DC, and well, anyone who was outwardly different.

I grew up in the 1980s and early 1990s. It’d be interesting to talk to the Mormons growing up today and see if this has changed, and how much.

Back to the topic, I think from God’s perspective (assuming there might be such a character) the idea of Mormonism being “better” than Islam is on the same level as Chinese food being better than Italian, or Toyota being better than Mazda.

I have kids who occasionally disagree. None has yet been stupid enough to excuse their fights with the notion that I like one better than his or her opponent. If anyone in my house ever was so shortsighted, it’d just be motivation to lengthen the period spent contemplating the world quietly in the time out chair. They seem to know this instinctively. Too bad so many adults can’t grasp the concept.

In my mind they are the same. Neither has any more credibility than the other (how much is the question).

They both are based on private revelations. Since the revelation was heard by none other than the ‘prophet’ then there is really no other evidence that any of it is true other than that prophet saying so.

Jesus was a smart guy, he knew that a private revelation would not change the world, that is why he had disciples and did his miracles in public. Let others spread the word for you, not you spreading your own word.

Well, I’ll amend my statement, Islam has indeed changed the world, but in my opinion not for the better.

Hmmm, pretty poor comparison…

Where is God’s command that we should drive just one brand of car?

There is truth and then there is non-truth. God commands us to truth.

Why ask such a question on a Christian web page. Comparing a christian group to Islam. Only here will you find such insulting and attacking Threads. Does Dogma allow for these sort of personal attacks. I am not now nor never will be a member of the LDS. However I have met several very kind Memebers of the LDS. I have welcomed them in my home and discussed Christian values. I will say their Remarks of others are far more respectfull than some remarks you will hear from those of you who attack them. WWJD ??

The AC/DC thing made me laugh, in high school I hung out with a garage band group. They weren’t impressed with people who listened to AC/DC either. They were more Pink Floyd Van Halen people(you probably would have hated them too:D)

I have a question for you, Agnostheist:

Which would you rather have done? Be shot in your right foot or drop an anvil on your left foot?

Either way it’s too bad for you.

The same applies both to Mormonoidism and Mahometanism.

I confess there is NO GOD but Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and Jesus is God Incarnate risen from the dead.

What’s wrong with AC/DC? 😃

You should also had a box entitled “Neither”, see how much the line would of went through the thread-----------------------------------

Actually, both are non-Christian faiths started by self-proclaimed prophets and I wouldn’t consider one to be better than the other. If you think Mormonism is Christian, you seriously need to learn some basics of the cosmology. In a broad sense, Islam could actually be seen as closer. By the way, that’s not a criticism of either faith or their followers. I have not known near as many Moslems as I have Mormons, but those that I have known (and do know) are nowhere near as arrogant and standoffish as the Mormons. Of course I know Mormons who are totally cool, accepting, and regular people, but that has been the exception. On the other hand, ALL of the Moslems I have known fall into that category and their overall deportment leaves me with a MUCH better impression. On a personal level, I have never had a negative experience with a Moslem; here or even when traveling in Moslem countries. I think they all get a bad rep based the activities of a small, albeit very visible, minority of (largely) politically motivated nut-jobs. Based on my personal experience, I’d much rather have a Muslim neighbor than a Mormon neighbor.

I think I’d rather prefer being shot.

Mormonism = getting a hole in your foot?
Mohammedanism = getting your whole foot crushed (including part of your lower leg)?

interesting comparison. 😃

^ take note that in my point of view, Catholicism makes as much hole in the foot as Mormonism does. The two pretty much has the same practical ills and benefits. And the two pretty has the same level of objective evidences that supports their fantastic claims: NONE.
