Big Bird and other Sesame Street characters were created by Jim Henson whose company supports things that are quite liberal and anti-Catholic such as Same-Sex Marriage. Also those characters are sold in toy stores and probably bring in as much income as do Disney characters. So why should PBS need government support?
You guys realize that there are more shows than sesame street? The two BEST kids shows that I have seen (super why and word world) are funded by the government and on PBS. They are by far the most educational shows for toddlers.

The amount of money that goes into pbs is so minuscule when you look at the total government expenditure that there seems to be no reason to cut it.

Really?

Or were you being sarcastic?
I just think that the government shouldn’t be restricted to a document written over 200 years ago. I guess it makes sense that the constitution doesn’t mention anything about TV though.

As well as a whole ton of interruptions asking for money and giving out “free” stuff.

Maybe I’m watching at the wrong time.
Watching PBS reminds of listening to VCPR “Please we’re trying to pay for our second house here!”, “And here’s a $10 donation from Jessica from Tampa…Wow you think she could have given more.” :D:D:p

What I’m really worried about is the effects of even mentioning it. The idea of big bird getting fired is becoming quite popular.

Methinks the focus is a little ridiculous. No real interest in the Benghazi security, but quick to jump on Big Bird. 🤷

I’m sure the same thing happened in Soviet Russia.

Stalin murdered 4.5 million more comrades because he had a bad breakfast…:coffeeread:

OOOHHH Yuri the Red Pioneer may not be aired on Pravda Radio…the horror! :bigyikes:

The major stations are all owned by major corporations, and they derive all of their income from other major corporations by selling their products. Unfortunately, we rely on these media outlets to tell us what is going on in the country, so that we can vote from an informed position. It’s no secret that the “news” that we get is mostly happy talk meant to keep us buying and not thinking about our situation too deeply. Voters these days are woefully under-informed, in my opinion.

So I for one am glad to have PBS. And to privatize PBS would utterly change it, forcing it to rely on corporate cash like all the others. It’s a certainty that the product would be made to change by those paying the bills.

Media sources like PBS and the BBC are indispensable to the dissemination of information necessary to inform the electorate. The reason the Rebubs want PBS squashed has nothing to do with the cost to run it.

So you think that PBS has no spin because it’s bought by the government instead of corporations? Does the government not also want people to act a certain way?

Nonsense. PBS can be viewer-funded. It doesn’t have to rely on corporate cash, and it doesn’t have to receive money from the federal government.

Actually some shows on PBS are funded by corporate money.

But Romney/Ryan are talking about eliminating deductions so …

That’s one thing I would actually support them on. I’m always in support of lower taxes.

Point of contention in most debates. Lower number of deductions et ceteris paribus means individual and corporate higher tax bill generally. Also it would affect entities, such as charities in this case, especially those charites which have contributions from large donors, which makes the charities even more dependent on the government for survival.

But however you look at it, the tax code as long as we have it generally allows social engineering on the part of government. Newt Gingrich got that part right.
