We, collectively, as a nation did accumulate this debt. Elections have consequences. We are all responsible for the national debt even if we didn’t vote for the guy that racked up the debt.
I already pay tens of thousands of dollars in state and federal taxes. I will file my final return on October 15th (following the usual annual extension) and I’m certain I will have to pay Uncle Sam even more. I cringe whenever I look at my final tax bill every single year.

I’m a huge national sales tax fan, for just that reason. No surprises.

I want to see everyone pay something, no matter how little the tax bill. People pay attention when they have skin in the game.
With the ACA and its involvement with the IRS, they will NEVER get rid of the progressive income tax.

Agree completely. It shouldn’t be possible to vote to spend other people’s money.

I can live with a progressive tax structure, if necessary, so long as everyone antes something into the kitty. When half the population pays zero federal income taxes, its simply wrong.

Why do you hate poor people? I bet you want to see grandma eat cat food while she dies of untreated bedsores while lying in a gutter after she gets kicked out of her home…

😉

I am NOT a fan of the “progressive” tax system. I believe in a flat tax for both corporate and personal taxes (including capital gains. The rate is negotiable…between 15% and 20% for all income above 150% of the poverty level…and eliminating most deductions. At this time a family of four has to make 50K a year before they have any federal income tax liability…that’s just ridiculous.

I don’t hate poor people. Your assertion is both ludicrous and offensive. I fully support aid to the mentally and physically infirm population. Otherwise healthy and mentally fit individuals should get a job ( a second one if necessary), pool family resources, live within their means, and become contributing members of society. Why should society carry people capable of supporting themselves?

You guys realize that there are more shows than sesame street? The two BEST kids shows that I have seen (super why and word world) are funded by the government and on PBS. They are by far the most educational shows for toddlers.

The amount of money that goes into pbs is so minuscule when you look at the total government expenditure that there seems to be no reason to cut it.
Big Bird/Sesame Street makes 100million plus a year. Why should the government be subsidizing this? It can easily stand on its own.

Also consider that it has a vault of tapes which I’m sure are used just as the I LOVE LUCY show has been tapes of the orginal show made 60 years ago. Sesame came on in 1969…43 years ago. It can stand on its own.

I’ve always enjoyed PBS but let it get its own funding. If it is good, it will survive. If not, it doesn’t.

It’s not the progressiveness of the Fed. tax code that is the problem, though the bare rates themselves are hyper-progressive. Still the major problem is the complexity of special deductions and rate schedules for different “types” of income. The code also has a built in from of welfare, a negative tax. There are many professors that have proclaimed that the IRS is the most efficient method to distribute as long as you have to regulate taxes as well. The concepts that many of these were added (exceptions with some specially “targeted” loopholes) are not horrible in themselves, but all of these hodgepodge additions and deductions, Alternative Minimums, etc make the whole a tar ball of obscurity.

We just need a simple system that can be predicted from a formula of less than 7 variables. Where an animated graph that changes with each of the variables not on the x and y axis. This way at least a majority of people will understand of how much everyone is contributing under different circumstances. Then the politicians can haggle about this small set of the fixed coefficients that tweak each of the variables.

Why assume that there is nothing in place for this event? Besides SS, indigent grandma can receive Old Age Assistance, be treated for those bedsores and what ever aliment precludes her from moving in the first place, qualify for visiting nurse aid, meals on wheels, food stamps etc. All of this is in place and paid by taxes.

I guessed you missed the little winkie smiley, indicating sarcasm. Sorry. 😊

“Million Muppet March” planned to defend U.S. backing for PBS
Plans to save Big Bird, the fuzzy yellow character on U.S. public television’s “Sesame Street,” from possible extinction are taking shape in the form of a puppet-based protest next month dubbed the “Million Muppet March.”
The demonstration is planned for November 3 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., three days before the general election.
I am not putting down a bet that a million show up. Is this meant to be a mockery of the outrage over Romney saying he would end pbs funding or is this for real?

Maybe if these misguided people just donated $10 to “save” Big Bird, rather than march…they could fund Sesame Street for the forseeable future.
Sesame Street should be able to stand by itself. It has 43 years worth of tapes to run. It doesn’t even have to produce anything new. I LOVE LUCY has raked it in for 60 years.

By making Big Bird a campaign slogan, the Democrats show their desperation. Chris Matthews even called it ‘Mickey Mouse’. So, my advice to Obama is to keep it up. Save Big Bird! Save Big Bird!

I also missed the  Sorry.:o

I was talking to a gentleman and O supporter the other day who feared Medicare cuts because his wife is ill. Then he went into a tirade re. BIG BIRD cuts stating if the bird got cut, kids wouldn’t learn and its a national treasure etc. etc.

My thoughts were the show will survive and if we have to cut, better the bird gets the axe and not wife’s Medicare which will not suffer under Romney but will under O.

Scott,

Please make your 🙂 visible at the end of your post. I didn’t catch your attempt at sarcasm because 😉 was near the signature line. I responded as if you were totally serious (as you could tell).

Thank you! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
