When my mother was laid off back in '08 the company hired someone to help these people find another job. Needless to say they all managed to get together after the lay off. One thing they found out was that all of them where either over 40 or had major health problems. Only one person managed to get a job shortly after being laid off. He was in his 30s. I think the age gap has largely been ignored in all of this. It’s there though.

Thanks for pointing out the age discrimination problem. I couldn’t find any recent statistics, but I’m sure you’re right. The only person from my husband’s group who failed to get rehired after being laid off was one man who was in his late 50s. He was too old to get rehired and too young to retire - a pretty grim situation.

Greed, corruption, and avarice have nothing to do with conservatism or properly functioning capitalism. There is no perfect economic system, but capitalism (properly functioning) is the only system that allows an individual to have dignity. Crony capitalism (also called corporatism, or fascism) is what we have now do to governmental overinvolvement in the market. The government is supposed to be the “referee” by ensuring that all sides play fair as a neutral observer. However, under Bush and even more so under Obama, the government is picking sides, picking winners, and bending regulations to favor certain companies and certain industries, giving very favorable loans and grants to certain industries and companies. Go ahead and blame capitalism if you want, but Republican and Democrat politicians both have been reprehensibly guilty in causing the mess that we are in. There are no clean hands in this. For the Democrats to come out and “favor” the OWS crowd as if they had nothing to do with it is petty and naive. They are just as guilty as causing the mess on Wall Street as the Republicans are.Now imagine what it must be like for a high school graduate with NO college degree to get a job. How is he or she going to compete with your friend for those “entry level” positions that conservatives claim is the first step up the ladder?
An entry level job is not going to help our college students get out of debt - so they are screwed. A high school graduate is not going to get an entry level job, because they are all being taken by college graduates desperate for any kind of work - so they are screwed.
The old conservative pathways to success have evaporated due to the unregulated greed and stupidity of Wall Street. It’s a mess for everyone - expect the Wall Street bankers and the 1% who created the crisis in the first place. They are back in business and making a bundle.

I have to laugh at the “living wage” demands. Most of these people won’t take low level jobs that pay “living wage”. I know this because I interview them on college campuses and in my office. Usually about the time they start telling me how they organized their frat or sorority float during spirit week as an example of leadership skills I put down the pen and idle through the interview.

I didn’t get that from their signs, so it sounds like these protesters could do more good by going to Washington and lobbying against such practices.
