Who Else Saw The Plates Besides Smith?

Diana, I do indeed see the irony of everything you’re saying, considering the fact, the FACT that, in fifteen years as a LDS, actively attending Gospel Essentials, Gospel Doctrine, Relief Society (occasionally) and Sacrament Meeting, I was never ONCE not even ONCE taught ANYTHING about the Christian Church, from the time of the Apostles to Joseph Smith, other than that the entire Church went into a universal Apostasy - that it had shattered, like ‘a broken mirror’!

Imagine how I felt when I discovered the stories of the Early Saints and all the Saints down through the ages who lived and died for the Faith! I felt like I would crumble into a million pieces!

Never once was I taught anything other than APOSTASY and Joseph Smith, as a LDS. So yes Diana, your words are ironic indeed.

And as Rebecca pointed out, Jesus’ Church failed, according to Mormonism, not only once, but indeed it failed TWICE; in the Old World as well as the New. Where did it go, Diana? Where was God then?
You weren’t taught about all the people who struggled so hard to keep the gospel alive on the earth? You weren’t taught the words of Luther, and Calvin, of Peter and some of the men who compiled the bible as we know it?

Odd.

I was.

There is a verse about the RCC however which you should be aware of:
Quote:
For it shall come to pass in that day that the churches which are built up and not unto the Lord when the one shall say unto the other Behold I I am the Lord’s and the other shall say I I am the Lord’s and thus shall every one say that hath built up the churches and not unto the Lord. ()
Once again, the Holy Book of Mormon has nailed it to a “T”.
Wrong again, it’s not the Catholic Church but the LDS and believers of the Book of Mormon that is being referred to, can’t you see that? It’s as clear as a bell for goodness sakes!

You weren’t taught about all the people who struggled so hard to keep the gospel alive on the earth? You weren’t taught the words of Luther, and Calvin, of Peter and some of the men who compiled the bible as we know it?

Odd.

I was.
I was taught that Luther, the onset of Protestantism, and even the founding of this Country was necessary for the Restoration to be able to take place.

As for Peter, I knew the Bible stories, vaguely. And certainly, I was taught that the “rock” was revelation, not Peter himself. As I said before, I learned nothing about Christianity from the time of the Apostles, except the supposed Apostasy/Restoration. And no, I was never taught anything about how the Bible was compiled or by whom. Just that we believed in it ‘as far as it is translated correctly’.

What has Mormonism taught you about the early Christians, and all the Christians from the time of Christ until now? Have you honestly been taught, in the LDS church, that the gospel was kept alive on the earth that whole time?

Here is a very short list of the differences between the bible and the BOM
  1. 3 Nephi 15:21-22 - The Nephites are the “other sheep” which Jesus spoke of in John 10:16.
    a. Mormonism teaches that these “other sheep” (Nephites) would become “one fold” with the Jewish converts.
    b. The Gentiles are completely left out of this “sheep and fold” illustration. (To Mormons, the “other sheep” are not Gentiles).
    c. If the Gentiles cannot be sheep in the fold of the Good Shepherd (even though they can be saved in Christ - Gal. 3:27-28), of what “fold” are they?!
    d. Alma 5:39 - There are only two possibilities according to this verse: The fold of Christ or the fold of the devil.
    e. v. 21-22 - Since the “one fold” is defined here as exclusively Jews, Gentiles (all of them) must be in the fold of the devil!
    f. Such is the logical extension of this passage. Completely contradicts the Bible, which teaches Jews and Gentiles (who are converted to Christ) are all equally sheep in the Shepherd’s fold.
  2. 3 Nephi 7:21 - These “converts” were visited by “the power and Spirit of God.”
    a. This was about 31-32 AD, in the new world (America).
    b. At about this same time in the old world, John 7:39 tells us that the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified!
    c. Obvious contradiction.
  3. 1 Nephi 22:15 - Malachi 4:1 is quoted by Nephi.
    a. Malachi did not prophesy until around 400 BC.
    b. But Nephi quotes Malachi (“For behold, saith the prophet”) in 588-570 BC, over 150 years before Malachi prophesied!
    c. Lends evidence to the view that Joseph Smith wrote the Book of Mormon on his own, without divine guidance.
  4. 3 Nephi 20:23-26 - Jesus quotes Acts 3:22-26.
    a. Chronological impossibility! This passage had not been spoken or written yet!
    b. Surely Jesus would not have made such a mistake! But a man writing this book on his own could!

Rebecca, we claim that the apostasy caused the loss of the priesthood authority. We do not claim that the gospel was entirely lost; after all, if it were we would be pretty hypocritical to use the bible, or to believe anything else that was taught during that time.

In other words, WE do not claim that the world was ‘left in darkness’ completely…that would be your claim. As for the Jesuits, who exactly gave them their rides to the new world, and HOW long did it take them to get there?

No, the point still stands. You are claiming that Christ left the peoples of the new world without any of His teachings for 1500 years.

We aren’t the ones doing that.
First, the BoM is not the gospel of Jesus Christ, so no, it never existed in the Americas.

Second, the BoM is a fabrication, so you are going on fantasy.

Third, If you’re going to believe this stuff. Perhaps you should do your math. Mormonism teaches that the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Americas made it to 600AD. After that, it didn’t exist at all. Mormonism shows up 1200+ years later.

Leaving you with the problem still, the the person you believe in whom you call Jesus, utterly failed at starting a church, twice. Joseph Smith claimed as much.
I have more to boast of than any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such work as I (History of the Church, Vol.6, pp. 408-09).

  1. Mosiah 1:3 - The mysteries of God only known through the plates of brass (cf. 1 Nephi 5:10-13 - These plates of brass contained the five books of Moses and the writings of certain of the prophets).
    a. Rom. l6:25-26 - Paul said the mystery (God’s plan to save mankind in Jesus Christ) was not manifested until the first century in the gospel!
    b. Eph. 3:3-5 - Paul taught that the mystery of Christ had not been made known to the sons of men in earlier times, but that now (in the first century) it has been revealed to His apostles and prophets in the Spirit (by revelation).
  2. Alma 16:13 - The Nephites built synagogues after the manner of the Jews. cf. Alma 21:4-5, 20.
    a. How would these people have known about synagogues?
    b. Lehi left Jerusalem before the Babylonian exile.
    c. Synagogues did not appear until the Jews were in Babylonian exile!
    d. Contradiction!
  3. Moroni 7:1 - Mormon taught Christians in the synagogue they had built as a place of worship.
    a. Synagogues were strictly a Jewish phenomenon (place where they came to read the law of Moses, etc.).
    b. Synagogues were never built and maintained by Christians!
    c. Another contradiction of the Bible and ancient history.

I agree, If I told anybody about some of the statements made on this thread they would not believe that people could be that naive and that is an understatement.

Yes, poor me with my darkened intellect so inferior to your “white and delightsome” mind.
The Holy Book of Mormon taught me to discern, both by word and by experience, truly a marvelous help.
So you are positing the “Limited Geography Theory” of the BOM? That’s strange, since you decry the LDS and they’re the ones who came up with that to defend against the DNA evidence showing that the Amerindians are Mongolian in ancestry.
I don’t recall using that term in my statement. Our model is based on what TBOM says, it didn’t say S. America, so we had nothing to change. Ours has always been as it stands. So simple that a child could understand.
The BOM itself says that there was no one else on the American continents when Lehi and his family arrived (I believe you cited that passage a short while ago).
TBOM does not say that, but the uninformed have assumed it, you included. We have TBOM references that show there were others there before them. Again, very straight forward, nothing imagined or fabricated.
All Mormons believed and taught that until the DNA evidence came forth, and then suddenly the LGT shows up. Now they must do violence to the BOM text in order to protect their belief.
As I said, God does not want the Mormon church finding the true location, or the archaeological finds to back them up. They are deluded and will remain deluded so long as they ignore the teachings of TBOM.
Anyway, here is the math for the 230,000: Mormon 6:9-15 with a running total: Note that Mormon calls the fallen soldiers “my people”, not “mercenaries” “allies” or “those other guys” but “my people”, IOW Nephites.
Did you think we didn’t crunch the numbers ourselves? What did you think of Governor Clinton’s statement? Perfect match!

On the other note regarding who they were and how they were referred, TBOM is explicit that the believers, regardless of tribe or family name were considered “Nephites.”

It was a war over spiritual differences, of course those who sided with the Nephites from outlying areas were believers in Jesus Christ, and therefore Moroni would consider them his people/his team/his side. Ever been on a sports team? Same thing.
Your notion that these were non-Lehites recruited from other indigenous peoples is purely your own invention, not supported at all by the BOM text.
There is plenty of support. The Hopewell people disappeared at the same time as the Nephites. They, or the believers among them came and fought, and died at the same time!
If you think I’m wrong, show me where the BOM describes non-Lehites living in the Americas and the Nephites’ interactions with them. The bible is quite descriptive of the other cultures and peoples the Israelites interacted with. I would expect the same from the BOM.
These plates contain the smallest amount of non-essentials, or, not important for your salvation details for a reason. Don’t worry, the other records will come forth with what you are asking about.

Nevertheless, the facts are straightforward and present. After a mere fifty-five years, Jacob records that a man named Sherem came among them. You will notice that no family relation is stated, no “son of” reference. Keep in mind, it had only been 55 years!

Next, Jacob says that a whole “multitude” gathered together to hear about it. Where did “the multitude” come from? The locals of course.

Just because he did not waste his time engraving non-essentials, don’t let that cause you to overlook the essentials, which Jacob has plenty of. The allegory of the olive trees, his vision of the last days, and the fact that he met Christ - wow!

Consider the American Indian reservations. They are side-by-side to many cities and counties and yet we rarely hear of them in our papers, or on the radio, or TV, yet they’re right next door!

And third, Jacob had to speak out against polygamy. So where did the extra women to have polygamous relationships come from? The locals of course. Ever see the movie called The Bounty? Yes, American Indians were easily taken in by the white man.

Once more, it is very straight forward.
Not in the same condition, but surely recognizable. 421 AD is just this morning in archeological time. Much older sites (even in the Americas) have yielded artifacts in good condition that can easily be tied to specific cultures.
As we detail on our geography site, plenty of things have been found, for example, at the ancient City of Zarahemla was found a copper plate with “ancient engravings” on it. Also was found “several hundred pounds of axes” the iron of which was of “superior quality.”

At the ancient City of Bountiful it was reported to “have yielded for years, hundreds and even thousands of weapons, tools and utensils made and left there by the pre-historic occupants of the region.”

God did not, and does not want any evidence to be found to give credit to the Mormon Church. We actual know the location of a Nephite camp that was last used in the final battle. No one has asked to see it. Mormons are scared to death that their years of toil in South America were for naught.

If you had the decency to read the thread before “contributing” you would have found that those concerns were previously raised AND answered. Sorry.

Actually I appreciate the opportunity to get the information on record and on search engines. Thanks guys! Oops, I thought I was just a troll.

The kingdom founded by the Jaredites - I’m not making this up - was known as “the land of Moron.”

I think that pretty well sums it up.

Diana,

This is way off topic, but I am so curious to know about what you have learned about the Christian Church in LDS meetings.

I am curious to know what you’ve learned about the lives of Augustine, Benedict, or Francis? Ignatius, Therese of Liseux, or Catherine of Sienna? Padre Pio, Bernadette, Merton, Dorothy Day? Maximilian Kolbe? The Chinese Martyrs, the Ugandan Martyrs? (Do you have an idea of how many Christians have been martyred for the Faith in the last 100 years alone?)

The list of names of faithful Christians goes on and on and on. Their testimonies are powerful, and beautiful. I’d be absolutely blown away if you were to tell me you’ve learned about even one of them, in an LDS meeting of any kind.

uhmn…

Are you telling me that one does not need to know and accept Jesus to be saved? Why, if what you are saying is true, did God send any prophets to anybody at all? Why did He send His Son?
You posted about how if Jesus hadn’t come to the Americas after the resurrection, then God left them alone. I posted I don’t believe God leaves us alone and messengers aren’t necessary for humans to know God is with us. I never said anything about salvation.

TBOM does not say that, but the uninformed have assumed it, you included. We have TBOM references that show there were others there before them.
Post those BOM references and we can discuss them.
Did you think we didn’t crunch the numbers ourselves? What did you think of Governor Clinton’s statement? Perfect match!
Governor Clinton? Huh?
There is plenty of support. The Hopewell people disappeared at the same time as the Nephites. They, or the believers among them came and fought, and died at the same time!
Show me the Hopewell people in the BOM. I don’t remember them being named anywhere.
These plates contain the smallest amount of non-essentials, or, not important for your salvation details for a reason. Don’t worry, the other records will come forth with what you are asking about.
The smallest amount of non-essentials, like the repetition of “and it came to pass” about 10,000 times. 😉
Nevertheless, the facts are straightforward and present. After a mere fifty-five years, Jacob records that a man named Sherem came among them. You will notice that no family relation is stated, no “son of” reference. Keep in mind, it had only been 55 years!
Sherem was obviously a Lamanite. Jacob 7:4 says of Sherem:
And he was learned, that he had a perfect knowledge of the language of the people; wherefore, he could use much flattery, and much power of speech, according to the power of the devil.
Now why would a non-Lehite (even a learned one) have a perfect knowledge of Hebrew? Later in Jacob 6:24, it says:
And it came to pass that many means were devised to reclaim and restore the Lamanites to the knowledge of the truth; but it all was vain, for they delighted in wars and bloodshed, and they had an eternal hatred against us, their brethren. And they sought by the power of their arms to destroy us continually.
So this chapter is about a Lamanite who came and spoke to the Nephites in perfect Hebrew and tried to lead them away from Christ. Then after Sherem is dead, they devise ways to try to re-evangelize the Nephites. So simple a child could understand it.
Next, Jacob says that a whole “multitude” gathered together to hear about it. Where did “the multitude” come from? The locals of course.
The BOM people were amazingly fecund. They multiplied exceedingly and covered the face of the land.
And third, Jacob had to speak out against polygamy. So where did the extra women to have polygamous relationships come from? The locals of course. Ever see the movie called The Bounty? Yes, American Indians were easily taken in by the white man.
Pure conjecture on your part.
Once more, it is very straight forward.
Yes, straight from Spalding to Rigdon to Smith. 😃
As we detail on our geography site, plenty of things have been found, for example, at the ancient City of Zarahemla was found a copper plate with “ancient engravings” on it. Also was found “several hundred pounds of axes” the iron of which was of “superior quality.”

God did not, and does not want any evidence to be found to give credit to the Mormon Church.
(And you know God’s mind how exactly?)
We actual know the location of a Nephite camp that was last used in the final battle. No one has asked to see it. Mormons are scared to death that their years of toil in South America were for naught.
How come you know about all these archeological discoveries but nobody else does? Did you find them with the eyes of faith? A seer stone perhaps? :hmmm:

It gets stranger and stranger.
Paul

I agree, If I told anybody about some of the statements made on this thread they would not believe that people could be that naive and that is an understatement.
Isn’t this fun? Much better than television!

God bless us all,
Paul

We as Book of Mormon Christians only believe The Book of Mormon and what few revelations Joseph received that pertain to it.
So then you don’t follow the so-called “word of wisdom” (D&C 89)? Good, I’d like to buy you a beer! Despite our disagreements, you love Jesus as I do, so you are my brother. 👍

Do you mind if I smoke my pipe while we drink? 😃

God love you,
Paul

Well, I am glad you finally read it. You have to admit that the BOM is quite an unusual text. They mixed together anything that they could find fact, fiction, and legend, even slightly relative to the subject of pre-Columbian American history.

Yes, I suspect that there are scraps of even :whacky:" Beowulf" in it. Why else could Tolkien, a noted linguist, have been interested in the subject?
