Who here likes video games? Anyone?

I enjoyed Half-Life: Source; it’s certainly exciting to play, but it’s not a storytelling tour-de-force, nor am I crazy about some questionable symbolism that arrives at the end, such as the aliens that look like human fetuses, that giant crab that has functions like male genitalia, and the deity-like alien that we have to kill.

However, I’ve just started the seventh chapter of Half-Life 2, and so far the game has been blowing me away on almost every level, from the graphics’ attention to detail to the interactive environments to the characters we meet to the pro-life undertones underneath the brutality. I really hope the ending isn’t as problematic as the first one’s (and I don’t want to know until I get to it).

Looking forward to hearing what you think when you finish this one. If I remember right chapter 7 is Ravenholme? Great level.

“Highway 17”, actually, and I’m now into “Sandtrap”. Though I’m finding that I’ll have to limit Half-Life 2 even more than the other video games I’ve recently played because, as riveting as it is, I don’t want its disturbing imagery on my mind all the time.

I know what you mean. That’s mainly why I prefer Episode 2 over Half-Life 2 (even though it’s half the length) It’s a lot less grim. Well, for the most part anyways.

You probably would enjoy the Portal games if you haven’t played those already. They’re set in the same universe as Half-Life, but they’re not as disturbing.

Does anyone like the Final Fantasy game(s). I have only played FFX, which I really enjoyed. I just saw that they came out with a remastered version for the PS4, which looks really good. I also see that they are coming out with a remastered FFVII, which I haven’t played. (Don’t have a PS4, but we do need a new blue ray player soon).

Has anyone played Metal Gear V: Ground Zeroes? I haven’t played any part of the series but this one apparently got rave reviews. Is it worth buying?

Just beat Half-Life 2. I’m gonna write a full review, but the ending left me more disturbed by the level of violence.

Hello gamers

What system would you recommend for a newbie at this? I played nintendo as a child but then kinda went away for it. I’ve been interested in taking up gaming again since i enjoyed it so much. I also have gone to friend’s houses and been amazed at how cool some of the games are
Even though I don’t have kids, I’m looking for mostly family friendly games. I don’t like violence. Thanks in advance

For family friendly fun, you can’t beat Nintendo. 🙂 The Wii U is not as popular as the other two, but has some great games: Zelda Wind Waker, Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Maker, Splatoon, Super Smash Bros., Pikmin 3, and more. 🙂

I am biased though. 😛

Yep, probable Nintendo. You can play the classic games on it, and it has the most family friendly games on it. (The Wii U is compatible with Wii games, and there is the store where you can buy old games). Or the Nintendo DS for a handheld games system might be the way to go, depending on what kind of gaming you like.

Otherwise the playstation can double as a blue-ray player, but there are less family friendly games.

I would say generally, the Lego games are good “new” family friendly games (for any system). The Disney Infinity, Skylanders, and Lego Dimensions games are family friendly, but are money black holes. 😛

Why are they money black holes?

I got Black Ops III and Star Wars Battlefront for Christmas and both on the Xbox One.

BOIII so far is decent. It’s a little difficult adjusting to the futuristic elements in the game, but so far so good. The campaign is a little slow though.

Star Wars Battlefront is really good. I haven’t done the multiplayer but the graphics and of course soundtrack are excellent. I recommend this one easy…

Just played the first Portal this weekend; I took advantage of Steam’s Christmas sale and bought it along with Portal 2 and the Half-Life 2 followups.

And I gotta say, that was two dollars well-spent. It was way shorter than I was expecting, but in those four hours the twisted geniuses at Valve may have out-genius’d themselves.

Those particular games have a really cool feature, where you have a light pad that you replace characters or even items instantly just by placing and removing things from the pad. Unfortunately to take advantage of this cool game mechanics, the developers made it so that you cannot complete the game without getting a lot the accessories and characters (all sold separately). They are nice games and cool in theory. In practice they are expensive and frustrating (because you cannot go there or do that until you buy that $14.99 character or $4.99 doohickey, which you can only find at this store but not at that store, etc.).

Completed the Portal Duology and really enjoyed it. I’ve also started playing Beyond Eyes, a game that seems to do nothing more than tell a sweet story about a blind girl who’s searching for her cat, though partly why I’ve started it sooner than later is to balance out my mind after playing through Ravenholm 2.0 in Half-Life 2: Episode 1 (very exciting game, though; I’m not sure how prepared I am to be disappointed by Episode 2’s apparent cliffhanger ending).

Actually, half that entire game was Ravenholm x 2. Wasn’t crazy about it.

I prefer Episode 2 myself even more than Half Life 2. I like the mountain setting, and there’s less zombies. But yeah the cliffhanger is painful. Don’t know why they never finished the series.

At least the Portal games are complete.

I didn’t get Rise of the Tomb Raider for Christmas. It isn’t compatible with our Xbox.

Although on the plus side I did have Metal Gear Solid V which I’m starting to like.
