Who here likes video games? Anyone?

I think it could also be a lack of creativity. Now every game is a clone of Call of Duty, Warcraft, GTA, etc… Its very evident too with low budget mobile phone games where everything is a clone of Candy Crush, Clash of Clans, or a poor port of a game from bygone times.
It’s the nature of business to play it safe by copying something that is already popular rather than striking out into new territory. But I think the innovations will still come. They just might be more difficult to find amidst the multitude of clones.

I wonder about that, though. I mean, how many more new innovative things or concepts can be created? There’s already like thousands upon thousands of video games out. It’s like TV shows, what concept hasn’t been done yet? 🤷

If anything, I’m just waiting for a virtual reality kinda game, and I don’t mean Virtual Boy! 😃 Maybe something similar to the Holodeck that u see in Star Trek. That might be too awesome, though. ^.^

It seems to already be going in that direction. The big selling point of the Wii back in 2006, or whenever it came out, was that you could capture motion movements with the Wiimote. And then they made it better with the MotionPlus thing (playing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword with that was so much fun :p) and Sony and Microsoft followed suit with the PSMove and Kinect. I know they already have very good virtual reality simulations for flight simulation for the Air Force. In fact, it’s supposedly so good that you can’t tell the difference between the simulation and reality. It’s probably just the case that the technology is cost-prohibitive for commercial uses, but with time the cost comes down. I’m waiting for the day when you can actually go to Hyrule :D.

I do wonder about that, too, but then I am always suprised at what new things come out and gain traction. Just look at Skylanders. Who would have thought it would take so long for someone to think of putting video games and collectible action figures together? And yet it wasn’t until a few years ago that it hit the stores and netted Activision more than 2 billion (with a “b”) dollars with just three games released over the course of two and a half years.

As time goes by, though, it does seem to get more difficult. I remember in high school, my theater teacher listed off the 20-some different types of plots that pretty much characterized all of literature throughout human history. And everything is more or less a variation on those themes. But people still find original ways to implement the same ol’, same ol’.

I think there is still room for new ideas. If I could think of one to describe, though, I would become a game developer and make millions of dollars. 😛

I bought my cousin a Virtual Boy back when it was on super-duper clearance after it totally flopped. That’s pretty much the only console Nintendo ever put out that truly flopped.

I faintly recall when it went on clearance as well, lol. I never bothered to buy it, though. I’ll admit back when I wasn’t really practicing my faith, I did play it thru the use of emulators. I just remember everything in the gameplay being red. ^.^

Also, though, not a console, I believe Nintendo also flopped with the Power Glove. 😛 Remember that? Lol.

I wouldn’t have bought the Virtual Boy for myself, but since my brother and I were trying to figure out what to get my cousin for Christmas, our combined spending limit was enough to cover the new low, low cost. 😛 My cousin still has it, too. 🙂

Yeah, Nintendo has created quite a few peripherals that haven’t fared so well. I do remember the power glove. 😃 I always thought it would be cool to have, but I never did get it. I guess I was part of the reason it didn’t do so well. :o

One thing about Nintendo, though, is that they are often years ahead of their own innovations. Their imagination usually runs ahead of the technology. They came out with the Virtual Boy as a “portable” game system offering 3D visuals. It flopped. But then 15+ years later, they come out with the 3DS – which now is able to offer 3D graphics in color and it actually fits in your pocket.

Also, I recall reading in Nintendo Power back when the Super Nintendo was just about to come out about how they wanted to introduce things into Mario games such as the capacity to be able to play as yourself in the game. Fast forward to the age of the Wii and the “Miis” become a staple of Nintendo gaming.

And what is the power glove if not a precursor to the motion controls of the Wii? The NES Zapper, too, forsaw the days of point and click gaming on the Wii.

It makes me want to dig out my old Nintendo Power magazines and look for more such things. 😛

When Nintendo gets an idea, they don’t let it go very easily.

Point of information: The Power Glove was actually from Mattel. Motion control was being experimented with in several places in the late 80s; Broderbund (a famous computer game company that made several NES games, including one of the most infamously bad, Deadly Towers) had the U-Force, which was almost a proto-Kinect where you moved your hands over the sensor for controls. But I think Nintendo proper realized that such things were too pricey and unreliable for the mainstream market; each of those peripherals would, IIRC, run you about as much as an NES.

If it weren’t for its cameo in The Wizard, I suspect the Power Glove would be forgotten except by old-timers like myself. (My NES turns 25 this year. Haven’t turned it on in about a decade, I’m afraid.)

Very good point. I started playing the board game Wings of War recently and was impressed with its strategy, simplicity, and levels of difficulty. You can go at your own pace, stop to chat with the other players, and smack talk all with a board and some cards! In a weird way, it was the most realistic flying game I’ve ever played: damage, firing range, plane capabilities, air tactics, etc. I was very surprised that the board game genre was so robust and popular.
If you liked Wings of War, you might be interested in the fact that there are now Star Wars and Star Trek games based on the same system (with just a few tweaks). Both games are HUGELY popular, and there’s probably a game store nearby where people gather to play them once a week.

There’s also a dragon-themed version set to come out soon, just I’m case you’re more into fantasy than sci-fi.

I am! But my big issue is time management now with a growing family. I’m just getting into the board games with my extended family so we’ll see where it goes. Meanwhile my Xbox 360 is collecting dust! I love final fantasy and games with a great story so I may eventually get back to the original RPG style games.

I LOVE video games! Especially strategy games since I’m a history buff.

Besides that genre games I’ve played were those in the simulation genre (SimCity, Sims 2, etc.), shooter games (CounterStrike, Half-Life), and some GTA games.

I’ve played numerous console games too like Portal 2, Splinter Cell, etc.

Avid video game lover here! My first was, I think, Harvest Moon 64. My big brother had me playing video games since I could hold the controller. I still remember him teaching me how to play Ocarina of Time. And him and me and my twin sister spent many days racing in Mario Kart. My brother always beat us 😦

I grew up on video games. They’ve shaped my life, and I think they’re just awesome. But as a general list, I’ve played:

A little bit of Mario games (as well as Luigi’s Mansion, a favorite at age 11)
TONS of Zelda, one of the best out there!
As stated above, plenty of Harvest Moon
Animal Crossing (I can’t put it down sometimes)
Soul Calibur
Perfect Dark (though truth be told that wasn’t often, but still fun)
Starfox
Super Smash Bros
Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie
Mystical Ninja
Final Fantasy: 5, 6, 7, and 8 (all of which I own currently)
and last but certainly not least, the Tales of series (Symphonia was my first, I fell in love with it. Then came Abyss, and I recently got Vesperia but haven’t beaten it yet)

So mainly, RPGs and such. 😃

Welcome! 👋 Sounds like you got a lot of use out of the Nintendo 64. That was a great console.

I’ve been working on Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix that came out last fall over the past couple of weeks. This is the first time I got to play Re: Chain of Memories and some of the boss battles are a little difficult (getting sick of fighting Riku over and over again). Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is coming out in a month and I’m looking forward to that.
I wouldn’t play it. There are a lot of anti-religious themes in the Final Fantasy games.

Yeah, you’re right. I had only played FFXII and FFXIII and those made me a little uncomfortable and I know that FFVI and FFX are particularly bad in this regard. I had found out about some of the plot of Lightning Returns and decided not to get it in the end. Oh well…

Yes it was. I still miss the N64. I think that my brother got rid of all of our games because I can’t find them at our parents house, and I look almost every time I go back there. 😛 Too bad Nintendo doesn’t put more of them up on the Shop Channel.

Yeah, Nintendo is a bit slow in putting up their back catalogue for some reason. I still have my N64 up in my closet. I should take it out sometime.

Mario Kart 8 comes out in a couple weeks. The retro tracks are very much weighted towards Mario Kart 64 (5 of the 16 tracks). Every other version has only 1-3 tracks featured. I’ll have to get used to actually playing the full course for Wario Stadium and Rainbow Road. I’m so used to taking the unofficial “shortcuts” on those two tracks. I’m sure the upgraded versions make those shortcuts impossible.
