From what I have read here (correct me if I’m wrong), YOU are the one that got offended
Giannawannabe, I like your username. It’s after St. Gianna Molla, right?
You are right that I get offended too easily. Thank you for reminding me to stop taking things personally. God bless you!

my Mother my Confidence,
Corinne

God Bless you too Corinne. I’m glad you didn’t take “offense” at my post 🙂

Hope you get more Club Members soon!!!

God Bless

Oh. I forgot. Yes, my user name is in honor of St. Gianna Molla. I hope to be as selfless a mother as she was.

God Bless

All that members need to do is not watch TV.
Been a charter member for – well, umm, I won’t say exactly how long, but I stopped watching TV when I was still a teenager. Books were just so much more engaging. I’ve never owned a TV in my life.
No TV in your home.
Does a monastery count? 😉 No TVs here.

Coral, I don’t think springbreeze gets offended “too easily”. She was merely responding to your husband, in what I would call a very calm and kind manner.
Wanting an apology because she was offended by a mere obvious generalisation? If people are offended by the wrong things, that is their problem. I don’t remember who said it, but “the truth offends” is somewhat similar-- you don’t go apologising for being Catholic to people offended by it, do you?

Nope. I saw false information and personal attacks against my wife and got annoyed enough to post.

Let’s get back to who wants to join the No TV Club. That was great!!!
Or at least take off-topic stuff off the thread…

Just found this thread…count me in. I don’t have cable and my TV doesn’t even have an antenna hooked up to it. I watch DVDs and that’s it. I don’t miss TV at all.

count me in too, i just don’t care @ the tube (except for religious ed/ent), hardly ever touch it:thumbsup:

Of course a monastery counts! 🙂 I love monks. I went to Benedictine College for a year and that was the first time I was around nuns (four were students while I was there) and brothers. Books are very engaging and I find that with very few exceptions, books are better than the movies made from them.

Great! That’s almost like Luke and I. We watch DVDs on his computer (and he tells me that computer monitors are better quality than TVs anyway). How could you possibly miss a near occasion of sin like TV? I detest the vulgarity, sexual innuendo, commercials (more temptation to buy things and they’re annoying), and extremely biased liberal mainstream media.

Corrine ~

Do you have like different levels of membership? Here is the reason I ask.

I have given up almost all TV watching in preference of spiritual reading, house cleaning, prayer, gardening… endless things.
But - I believe the TV is helping to save my husbands soul. I will only watch EWTN and sometimes my husband comes and watches with me and his interest and knowlege of the faith is growing. EWTN is a great tool for his evangelism, and he wouldn’t get the same from internet streaming as their is no computer in the house and he wouldn’t come to my workplace to listen. He is not a christian or a catholic, and EWTN is helping him so much - and is a great help in my life.

So - could you please develop a membership package for us “EWTN Only” NO TV CLUB members. Then I will join as soon as American Idol wraps up for another season. :o

ridesawhitehors,
Welcome to the club. I am very glad to hear that EWTN is leading your husband to God. Your membership package is what I hope you’re already doing: having fun on CAF and praying for your husband. 🙂

Dear friend

I am sure you will agree that we should remain peaceful. If someone has been offended they have a right to rebuff an argument and you also have made your feelings clear as well. I’m not leaping into someone’s arguement here, but as someone who is not overweight I found the comments about beauty and obesity offensive and can see why they may, even if not intended to be, come across as offensive. It did imply that all people who are over-weight are lazy and this is just not true!

Being over-weight has risen in society, but there are many other factors for that, not just the watching of TV. Also on the rise are health problems such as bulimia and anorexia, so much so that children are suffering from these awful diseases. This is mostly due to pressure from society to be ‘thin’ not taking into account the natural physique of a person or other factors such as disability, depression etc etc. Not all slim people are fit, I’m not fit, I know I am not, I have a disability, I cannot exercise, but I am definitely not lazy!! If I was over-wight and did not exercise would that be because I am lazy?

I just didn’t like the parallels drawn or implied and I can sympathise why others have taken offence at your wife’s posting. I am sure no-one was making a personal attack, I am sure they are rebuffing a post that has caused offense and that is simply all that it is. Just because your wife has posted something that has offended people’s feelings does not mean we do not like or love her, I respect her even if I do not like her views or agree with them as stated in previous posts of mine in this thread.

How do you account for all those people in history who were obese before the TV was invented?

Still best of luck with the no TV club and no it would be silly to let it affect your wife’s club, there are plenty of people on this forum who support her views on getting rid of the TV. I hope this thread can return to peaceful discussion again.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

I don’t know much about history, but I think that the overweight people who were around before TV (may they rest in peace) were considered rich. The poor people had a harder time buying food and they had to work harder. It’s interesting that the tables have turned: fat people are now looked down upon (though certainly not by me). springbreeze, you are offended too easily. God bless you!

my Mother my Confidence,
Corinne
Dear Corrine

I am not offended easily, what you might not find offensive other people do and can find offensive. You cannot know anything about me. I am a name on a screen, just as you are, so in the interests of peace, let’s not bounce things back and forth, that would be purely juvenile.

<<<thinks it is never good to try and talk things like this out on a medium like the internet, so many things can be misconstrued.

Good luck with your thread, good luck with your club:)

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

I love this!! I had given up tv for my children & myself for sometime except PBS(& don’t get me started on PBS, especially lately ugh!!) & news specials…BUT I let us slip back into watching too much!! This is great, if I can use it for tapes & big news events. My folks have EWTN & I dearly love it…
Also, as an aside, the internet takes up more of my time than the tv & I’d love some support around this…Thanks for such a great idea & just in time!

Renee, I am glad that you are so excited! EWTN is the only exception for the “No TV Club”. If you need help spending less time on the Internet, here’s my advice:
  1. listen to your body when it feels really stiff (take a walk, take your kids to the park, etc.)
  2. go to flylady.net and subscribe to the free email service. FlyLady is all about routines and the emails are a great motivator to get things done around the home!

For years I have limited TV, and took cable off when my then teenaged son was in the clutches of MTV. I love to read, especially the big classics that take up tons of time and are so full of worthwhile ideas and language. TV has its place though, as long as it is used sparingly and shut off when the idea floating from it into your head is truly awful. I wish broadcasters would be more responsible, since some of the stuff is just soooo tacky and vulgar, having absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever. My kids get completely annoyed when they come over and sit down to “watch the fuzz” on the tv, but I still wouldn’t want to give up on it altogether. I have enjoyed some of the things I’ve seen there immensely. Kids should be taught Responsible Use of the Televsion 101 in Catechism class alongside all the other temptations out there.

Corinne,
Thank you for your suggestions. I recently bought the book, A Mother’s Rule of Life by Holly Pierlot & it is wonderful…I just have to put it into practice now!! (btw, Pierlot has been called the Catholic fly lady)

Anyway, did I read earlier that movies were permitted?
Thanks again,Renee

The internet is a location, not an action, and this would be like saying “Town-in-which-I-live takes up so much of my time!”
What activity is it that takes up the time and you would like support dropping?

Just like kids should be taught to have responsible sex and drink alcohol responsibly if they’re going to do those things at all? (just kidding)
