Just saw this on Drudge, looks like I was right in my thought on independents.

washingtonexaminer.com/romney-winning-independents-59-35/article/2512610#.UJfn3MXA-4d
Team Romney is drawing satisfaction and a growing sense of confidence from a new CNN poll that, while over-weighting Democrats, shows that Mitt Romney is running away with independents, the Big Kahuna in Tuesday’s presidential election.
According to a new CNN poll, Romney is beating President Obama 59 percent to 35 percent among independents even when third party candidates are included. The poll has the race deadlocked at 49 percent, but the sample includes 11 percent more Democrats than Republicans, 41 percent to 30 percent, a bigger gap than recent elections have witnessed.
What’s more, the poll found a slight edge for Romney when it came to those who call themselves “very enthusiastic” about voting. In that category, Romney beats Obama 42 percent to 37 percent.
“We are winning with independents and enthusiasm goes to us,” said a Romney associate, who also pointed to the huge, 20,000-30,000 strong crowd that greeted Romney in Pennsylvania Sunday night as proof the Republican had regained momentum.

If Romney wins, we will know relatively early on in his first term whether or not ending abortion was his top priority. Needless to say, if he fails to do anything meaningful, this will be the last time conservatives buy the “lesser of two evils” argument and conservatives better go looking for another party.
A vote for Romney can immediate lessen the US support for worldwide abortion.

Under Obama (and Clinton) the US worked hard to support, promote, and develop the abortion industry in OTHER countries, especially developing countries (Mexican City policy). Each incoming President in recent years has made this one of the very first thing they institute upon taking the oath of office. This is an area presidents can have a direct, immediate impact - it can lessen abortion in the world, and also make the US less culpable for it in the world:

The Mexico City Policy, also known by critics as the Mexico City Gag Rule and the Global Gag Rule, is an intermittent United States government policy that** requires all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that receive federal funding to refrain from performing or promoting abortion services as a method of family planning **with non-US government funds in other countries. The policy has not been in effect since January 23, 2009 [when Obama too over]. Since 1973, USAID has followed the Helms Amendment ruling, banning use of US Government funds to provide abortion as a method of family planning anywhere in the world.

The policy is a political flashpoint in the abortion debate, with Republican administrations adopting it and Democratic administrations rescinding it. The policy was enacted by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1984, rescinded by Democratic President Bill Clinton in January 1993, re-instituted in January 2001 as Republican President George W. Bush took office, and rescinded January 23, 2009, 2 days after Democratic President Barack Obama took office

God bless you.

Anyone who serves the general population will have to stop doing so or be re-classified as a non-Church employee. In order to avoid being penalized by the HHS mandate one has to apply for and receive a religious exemption. ALL FOUR REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET:

"The exemption is only for a “religious employer,” defined as "one that (1) Has the inculcation of religious values as its purpose; (2) primarily employs persons who share its religious tenets; (3) primarily serves persons who share its religious tenets; and (4) is a non-profit organization under section 6033(a)(1) and section 6033(a)(3)(A)(i) or (iii) of the [Internal Revenue] Code." HHS notes that these provisions of the Code refer to “churches, their integrated auxiliaries, and conventions or associations of churches, as well as to the exclusively religious activities of any religious order.”"

Note the phrase “exclusively religious activities of any religious order.” Exclusively religious activities are those activities which meet the definition for an exemption. Operating soup kitchens, food banks, counseling centers, clinics or any other public institution which serves the general public WILL CAUSE them to lose the exemption. Basically in order to keep their exemption, they’re going to have to go home, lock themselves in and spend the day doing religious things only with other Catholics.

This takes effect JANUARY 1ST, 2013.

I have no idea how you could not know this. People have been talking about it since FEBRUARY. I’ve been pasting it all over the place since FEBRUARY. Catholics make me shake my head. It’s shocking how many of them are just plain clueless.
especially here in Ohio…I watched the news from Toledo this morning, and it was pretty plain the way the early voting will be going there…I say Obama will win, and this country will be headed down the path of self destruction soon afterwards…More rosaries and prayers for our country, please…

Your vote for Obama will do harm to your Church. Think about it. You would be voting to marginalize your own Church, just like the Reichstag marginalized themselves in 1933 and then could not legally stand up to Hitler.

I am amazed that Catholics intending to vote for Obama just cannot see this since it is very obvious. But then again, the Reichstag voted themselves out of existence in 1933 by basically trusting Hitler to do the right thing by Germany, so I see it is entirely possible.
.
Sigh. . . . . . .

Depends. Since it’s episcopalian, they may simply pay for abortions and be done with it. The Catholic Church does not have this option. Our own Catechism and basic doctrinal commitments for the last 2000 years do not permit this. Scripture does not permit this.

If they won’t pay for abortion, then they will pay $36,500 per year per employee in taxes OR they will use all volunteers or contractors.

Otherwise they’re going to close next year, CMatt.

Many protestant outreaches will close too, because they tend to read scripture and know what it says.
Ok I’m not going to worry about it then. It’s a very small, not a wealthy church. They both worship Christ on Sundays in and operate their outreach out of their parish hall. I don’t think they have many paid, if any staff beyond their pastor. The priest answers her own office phone. I know the many Christians who I’m sure as well read and hear Scripture, who serve at the outreach program during the wk are volunteers.

Independents have not been factored into the polls, and Romney leads there by a lot. Also most polls use the 2008 turnout model, which was an aberration in that the Dem turnout that year was extremely high, and is not expected to be close to that this time, meaning the poll models are wrong and are weighted toward the Dems when they should not be.

We will see.

If Obama wins, we can rest assured it is a continued chastisement for this country, with its institutionalized evil (“legalized” abortion, same-sex marriage, etc.).
Agreed, which is the one thing that keeps me more nervous than a typical election.

My head and heart say Romney, but my soul says “maybe we get another term of punishment.”

To set the record straight, what Cardinal George really said was…PS: If you want anyone to believe the stuff you’re spouting, HansTrappist, why don’t you try A QUOTE or a REFERENCE.
What was I “spouting”?

In fact, the Cardinal George reference to materialism (or “secularization”) comes from his recent column “The wrong side of history” (catholicnewworld.com/cnwonline/2012/1021/cardinal.aspx):🙂

Here is what he really said:

Communism imposed a total way of life based upon the belief that God does not exist. Secularism is communism’s better-scrubbed bedfellow. A small irony of history cropped up at the United Nations a few weeks ago when Russia joined the majority of other nations to defeat the United States and the western European nations that wanted to declare that killing the unborn should be a universal human right. Who is on the wrong side of history now?

The present political campaign has brought to the surface of our public life the anti-religious sentiment, much of it explicitly anti-Catholic, that has been growing in this country for several decades. The secularizing of our culture is a much larger issue than political causes or the outcome of the current electoral campaign, important though that is.

Speaking a few years ago to a group of priests, entirely outside of the current political debate, I was trying to express in overly dramatic fashion what the complete secularization of our society could bring. I was responding to a question and I never wrote down what I said, but the words were captured on somebody’s smart phone and have now gone viral on Wikipedia and elsewhere in the electronic communications world. I am (correctly) quoted as saying that I expected to die in bed, my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square. What is omitted from the reports is a final phrase I added about the bishop who follows a possibly martyred bishop: “His successor will pick up the shards of a ruined society and slowly help rebuild civilization, as the church has done so often in human history.” What I said is not “prophetic” but a way to force people to think outside of the usual categories that limit and sometimes poison both private and public discourse.

An earlier Archbishop of Chicago once tried his hand at reading the signs of his times. On May 18, 1937, Cardinal Mundelein, in a conference to priests of the archdiocese, called the then-German chancellor “an Austrian paper-hanger, and a darn poor one at that, I am told.” Why did Cardinal Mundelein speak in a way that drew applause from the New York Times and local papers and brought the German government to complain bitterly to the Holy See? The government of Germany, declaring its ideology the wave of the future, had dissolved Catholic youth groups and tried to discredit the church’s work among young people through trials of monks, priests and religious sisters accused of immorality. Cardinal Mundelein spoke of how the public protests of the bishops had been silenced in the German media, leaving the church in Germany more “helpless” than it had ever been.

He then added: “There is no guarantee that the battle-front may not stretch some day into our own land. Hodie mihi cras tibi. (Today it’s me; tomorrow, you). If we show no interest in this matter now, if we shrug our shoulders and mutter … it is not our fight, if we don’t back up the Holy Father when we have a chance, well, when our turn comes, we too will be fighting alone.”

“When our turn comes …” Was Cardinal Mundelein a prophet as well as an administrative genius? Hardly. At his death in 1939 he was well known as an American patriot and a friend of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, but he also had a Catholic conviction that no nation state has been immaculately conceived. The unofficial anthem of secularism today is John Lennon’s “Imagine,” in which we are encouraged to imagine a world without religion. We don’t have to imagine such a world; the 20th century has given us horrific examples of such worlds.

Instead of a world living in peace because it is without religion, why not imagine a world without nation states? After all, there would be no American ambassador recently killed in Libya if there were no America and no Libya! There are, obviously, individuals and groups who still misuse religion as a reason for violent behavior, but modern nation states don’t need religion as an excuse for going to war. Every major war in the last 300 years has been fought by nation states, not by the church. In our own history, the re-conquest of the secessionist states in the Civil War was far bloodier than the re-conquest of the Holy Land by the now despised Crusaders. The state apparatus for investigating civilians now is far more extensive than anything dreamed up by the Spanish Inquisition, although both were created to serve the same purpose: to preserve a government’s public ideology and control of society, whether based on religion or on modern constitutional order.

I hope that Romney wins but with Ohio too close to call and yesterday I heard on Fox News that independents nationwide shows a deadheat where at one point Romney had a 10 point margin over Obama.
Pew has Romney up 7 with indies.

I’m more than a little surprised that the DNC has not had “seminar posters” come in here to flood CAF the way they did in 2008. I’m not sure what that means. Have they just given up on the idea of persuading anybody on CAF to vote for Obama, or are their resources too limited this time to assign people to the task?

Do tell. Please substantiate your statement with logic, facts, catechetical evidence, or something. Anything other than a bald statement of belief that, on it’s face, valueless.
Pitchy never responds. She shoots off comments from india about how we do business, but never responds. Life must be boring on Bombay.

I don’t understand your response! I was really trying to see why. Not trying to be facitious. And if you understand it, could you please educate me?
Asking Cmatt to educate you about Catholicism is probably not the best idea.

Well there are certainly a few posters (not you) who seem to make a job (read employment) out of straight GOP talking points. Linked posts come every 15 mins. all day long. . . . . . . .

That takes some commitment.

If you don’t mind waiting until late tomorrow night or Wednesday morning, I’ll give you even more accurate figures. 🙂 🙂
Oh I agree, just refuting something that was said.

Polls now are a bit silly, but amke the last 24 more bearable for some.

Romney will win in a Landslide according to Professional Poll Reader and Author Dick Morris.
PS. I don’t know how any Catholic or Protestant could vote for Barrack HUSSEIN Obama !
Oh good you know the President’s middle name! 👍 Do you know Mitt’s? Considering that Barack Hussein Obama was baptized in the United Church of Christ, a denomination recognized by the Catholic Church as a Christian community… Professes to be a Christian, which at least according to what this forum’s rules say, no one can question… and as POTUS has attended St John’s Episcopal Church near the WH where he and his family have received Communion… also a Christian ecclesial community according to the Catholic Church… I’m not at all surprised.
