Why are atheists so unhappy?

“Become doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves with false reasoning. For if anyone is a hearer of the word, and not a doer, this one is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself, and off he goes and immediately forgets what sort of man he is. But he who peers into the perfect law that belongs to freedom and who persists in it, this man, because he has become, not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, will be happy in his doing it.” (James 1:22-25).

If a Catholic has the spirit then not one word or put down is necessary. People will feel it and become curious, but many Catholics are Catholic in tongue only so turn people off to the faith. The statement atheists are so unhappy is a put down. Catholics also are unhappy so we should be talking about that.
Speak the Truth in Love, yes, and do good works, but do not be afraid to speak the Truth! If we didn’t speak, the “very rocks would cry out…” Atheists are unhappy because they reject the reality and the love, joy and peace of God!
Catholics are unhappy if we haven’t
fully assimilated the Truth.
But that’s only half of the story, the other half, is that we have an unspeakable joy and the undeserved privilege through Christ, of knowing the"…glorious freedom of the children of God…" And the great irony is this, it is our hope and our prayer, in union with Jesus, "that not one of these be lost…"(Catholic*** or ***atheist)
God bless you.

Yes, but CD doesn’t believe in the dictionary definition- he prefers to make his own.😃
It really doesn’t matter what the dictionary says or what atheism really means. CD is trying to tell you what he means when he uses the term. CD doesn’t believe in God. You do. He’s the one that calls himself an atheist, not you, so it seems to me that he should be able to tell you what he means when he calls himself that. Why would you think that you could tell him what he believes?

If it is such a big problem for you, why not just drop the term form the conversation? CD doesn’t feel any burden of proof for not believing in God. He just doesn’t find the arguments and evidence for belief convincing. Why not just proceed from there? If you want to try to convince him, then go ahead.

Charlie has stayed with us up until now, as have you, dear Leela…both of you could have unsubscribed at any time…so I’m guessing that it is consoling to you both (and others) who have the same nagging curiosity about our origins-since your search hasn’t really been satisfied by science alone- to spend time here on a Catholic forum seeking the Truth.
We thank you, and welcome you to continue your search here at CAF.
Blessings of peace be with you.
I’m always puzzled what brings atheists and agnostics here. Not that I mind having them- I think it’s a good thing for the reason you mentioned. But I’m curious why, if they feel that strongly about the non-existence of God, they spend so much time on a religious website. Personally, in my agnostic days a forum like this would probably be the last place I’d spend my time on. But that’s just me…😉

LOL no I’m sorry but dictionary definitions may satisfy you (when they suit you), however some of us realise there is a little more to the subject than the reader digest understanding of it.

Break the word down then get back to me Einstein ;).

Your still agnostic dude.

I’m here to save people, you all only have ONE life! I don’t want to see you waste it :crying:

Actually, I’m not agnostic anymore…😉

Nor am I “wasting my life.” My faith has actually made it more fulfilling…👍

Charlie that’s God’s job (to save people), and furthermore what makes you think that I’m wasting my life? Please don’t cry. 😃

p.s What’s a pearlist?

Thanks for the awesome cut and paste work from dictionery.com! That ***saved ***us all from denial, anyway.😃

But my other life (the eternal one) has already been secured by another Love, so you can let the other pearlists know…gratefully, a fellow “Scot” somewhat removed.🎉

Please dissect the two words and explain to me how “without” mean “denial”.

Ah i don’t really think your wasting your life, however i saddens me that you deny yourself the opportunity to seek real answers. I also worry that you may do the same to others.

That been said i apologise for any time i have ever offended you. It really is not in my nature i just get very emotional about believe compared to knowledge.

Sure.** with out**-not to have something or Someone.** de nial**-rejection of a request.
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest for your souls.”

But Charlie that’s how I think of you (please do not take offense). Knowledge for me is faith and reason. I don’t deny the big bang, or evolution, or science its right to discover the world, I believe however that it’s limited in understanding the “why”. And I’m not planning a crusade against knowledge, in fact, I have three degrees, know three languages, and spent 8 years in University (taking courses in many fields). God bless. What’s a pearlist by the way (pearls of wisdom)?

p.s. Apology accepted, friend.

Wow, I’m impressed! I only have a high school education, since I dropped out of a community college after two weeks, because my poor Dad (God rest his soul) needed my loan money. I finally paid it off (the loan) 20 years later, with another loan (home equity).
Now I’m too old, tired and broke to ever go back, but I LOVE knowledge so much, that I pray for that gift from the Holy Spirit.( it*** is*** free:)) and I come to these forums to learn more!

I hope that more of my nine children will have the opportunity to go to college someday. (I have one daughter in her junior year of Nursing school at Franciscan University) But I’m really praying for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, too.:yup:

Physical evidence and reasoned logic. I am fed up of the atheist tag, it is redundant as a descriptive term. It’s like me calling you a Thor rejectionist, it is a perfectly accurate description but it tells me nothing about you, it is (like atheism) a redundant description.

The thing is there is a big difference between belief and knowledge. Just because one believes something does not make it true. There are very few ways to actually demonstrate real truth, to further the knowledge of man kind. We all have beliefs, for example i believe that socialism is a much fairer and better system than capitalism. However i cannot demonstrate this as fact, i believe it to be true, but i don’t KNOW it is true. My point is this, i am adamant that belief be kept separate from knowledge.

Science is a good thing, but it can only answer the how, not the why. It can’t answer our deepest longings- “Why are we here?” “What is the purpose of our existence?”
Several posts back I quoted from Karl Adams book The Spirit of Catholicism. He basically said that if God could merely be solved or measured like a mathematics equation, then only the wise and clever could see Him, not the humble and pure of heart.
