Why are non catholics here?

I mean, apart from for the great coffee and cookies, the wit, the repartie, - why else are non catholics here?

Is it out of idle curiosity for the catholic faith.

Is it to teach the catholics the error of their ways.

Is it to genuinely debate differences.

If its to debate differences - to what end? Is it to get converts for your religion, or are you open enough to respond to the catholic church if your concerns can be satisfied?

Im just curious that’s all.

It occured to me I have no interest in hinduism, so I dont visit hindu sites and I have currently no interest in debating their beliefs with them. I have no interest in Islam and dont visit Islamic sites and dont debate their beliefs with them. So what’s the interest here for non-catholics?

I’m actually here to understand catholicism better and to get a feel of what is going on. I wouldn’t have come here if it hadn’t been for the early church fathers.

I think the RCC is big and ubiquitous, so if Protestants or SDA or what have you si going to have opposition the RCC always comes into the picture. And, lots of people love a good debate. I do.

Depends.

Some are curious, some have agendas (some obvious, some well hidden), some are genuinely interested, and some are here to show us the error of our ways, to name a few options.

I would be careful not to generalize, though. It only takes a few posts to determine a non-Catholic poster’s intent so wait to see what course is taken before jumping to conclusions.
 
Hey there Ag not! Some come here to try and pry us out of God’s hand. Others are genuinely seeking to broaden their knowlege and some are reverts ashamed of the things they forgot while away. Some come here just to start arguments. Some lurk and see their arguments fall apart. Some have other intentions.

When I first joined, so long ago, most Non-Catholics on here were more interested in discussing our various faith systems. It was rare that someone would be on here trying to convert Catholics.

Then they found us.

Now, there are a multitude of reasons, from bordom to genuine interest in learning.
 
Ag-Not, You have set to the screen something I have wondered for a long time. If, in my opinion, folks are not Catholic & asking questions in a respectful manner, that’s cool. And some folks are like you were. Lots of questions, searching and sometimes feel like they are adrift without a rudder. That’s why we are here.

But my tolerence level for trolls in nonexistent. You know, it’s kinda funny. I belong to 6 forums that I regularly post to. This is the only one where I actually have to use the “ignore” option 😦

Because if non-Catholics were not here, you could not have the Non-Catholic Religions Forum section. Who better to represent the specific non-Catholic Faith than those from that particular faith?
 
I first joined so I could respond to some questions that were asked about my website. I then lurked for a while and then, suddenly, felt motivated to respond to a question. I still mostly just lurk, but that’s my preference at this point.

Frankly, I’m more at home among Catholics than I am among Evangelicals or most other Protestants. That’s probably mostly due to my Anglo-catholic spirituality.
 
The quest for knowledge never ends.

By the same token, why are there Catholics on here asking questions? For the most part, to enhance or clarify knowledge.

Perhaps Ag_not would be happier if the whole “Non-Catholic Religions Forum” were deleted?

I think she is just wondering about what brings them here, not so much saying how dare they!

Then again, I tend to see the good in people…

Well, there’s already a fairly recent thread on this topic, so I’d suggest reading the responses there.

To briefly summarize the response I already gave, my reasons for presence here are:

– to better understand the faith of a (semi-practicing) Catholic friend of mine

– to help others understand another perspective (in my case, evangelical Protestant) and foster ecumenical dialog, as I believe that the beliefs which tie us together are of much greater consequence than those which separate us.

I don’t have an active interest here in either convincing others to leave Catholicism or in becoming Catholic myself.
