Why can't homosexuals see that their behavior is an abomination?

I have just been learning about looking at one’s actions in a positive rather than a negative way. So rather than avoiding immodest clothing, trying to determine where the line is and all that, one would strive for a lady-like way of dressing. Does this make sense? And you post points out that we should apply the more positive way of looking at actions in other ways as well, so that rather than asking the question above, one might ask how can we help others to live or even to begin to want to live a chaste lifestyle for the glory of God, using His gifts to us as He intended them, and offering up our difficulties on the way?

Homosexual behavior is a truly disgusting form of sexual abuse, but homosexuals can’t see it or experience it. Why? It must be the deception of Satan!
You could say the latter about any form of habitual sin.

We all get frustrated, it isn’t easy when you find that one of the behaviours that will lead a person to death and destruction is not only accepted by society, but embraced and encouraged.
Yes, there are other sins that will take a person to hell, but many of those other sins are ‘easier’ to get away from, and don’t have the draw to them like sexual sins do.
(Reference to this in the verses about adultery in that “they have no understanding” and “every other sin is outside the body”)

As for me, I give in to my own frustrations sometimes about others and lash out. So while it may not be the most “compassionate” approach, it is understandable.

Also, as another poster pointed out, you did say the sin was disgusting, not the orientation/person.

Peace be with you now and in the coming New Year.

Probably because everyone doesn’t see homosexual behavior as an abomination according to THEIR moral values, which may not be exactly the same as yours or mine. I’m sure most homosexuals, and plenty of heterosexuals, do not regard gay sexual behavior as sexual abuse.
But what is it that makes some to view homosexual sex as normal while others see it as an abomination? It’s my perspective that it has to do with hypnotic trances that Satan has them (us) under.

Too me the act and the very idea of sodomy is disgusting, but I don’t see satan as behind everything.

It reminds me greatly of former pentecostal friends who actually wanted to “exorcise” me.

I did not let them of course.

BTW, the word abomination comes from Judaism and means any ritual impurtity. Eating clams is an abomination, as is touching the skin of a pig.

So football is an abomination literally speaking.

Back when I was a big-time sexual sinner, I couldn’t see anything wrong with it. The person I was then would see the person I am now as a repressed prude. I believed in a lot of lies.

It was a long spiritual journey, and made more difficult by my not wanting to see my own actions as evil.

Now I understand that they were, no matter how much fun I may have had and shared. More importantly, I know that Jesus loves me now, and loved me then. (Have you ever heard the bluegrass song, “the Ninety and Nine?” It’s based on the parable of the shepherd looking for his one lost sheep. It makes me cry every time.)

Whenever I talk to someone like me who has given up the sin, I say, “Party time in Heaven!” (See Lk 15:1-10)

Hetero- or Homosexual sinners - we were looking for the same thing: the unitive act. Chastity is a heavier cross to bear for the same-sex attracted, since we heteros have at least the possibility of marriage. (so, Mitex, :hug1::love:)

I like to say that the Church will ask a lot, but she will never ask a homosexual to try to change their orientation. Just another reason to know that I’m Home in Rome.

When I had a Mass offered for my very best friend, a gay man who died of Aids around 1986, I made a promise to him and to God, to say a Rosary every day for the hearts of homosexuals to be opened to the love of Jesus and His Church.

Care to join me?

Aww, that is beautiful. Thank you.

Sin is attractive to all of us because of our fallen nature and resulting inclination to sin. It’s just that some are attracted to different kinds of sins than others are. Porn (heterosexual) is truly disgusting, too. But I have to resist an attraction that I feel for it even though I know it’s disgusting. So, I assume it’s the same for those with homosexual attraction.

Sorry but I am sick of people saying that, because it is incorrect. Millions of heterosexuals are unable to marry, or never will marry, for a host of different reasons which are beyond their control (e.g. simply that they never meet someone who finds them attractive enough to marry). And homosexuals DO have the exact same possibility of marriage as heterosexuals do. Very few if any homosexuals actually would find it impossible to perform the normal conjugal act.

And if I’m suffering from a temptation to fornication/sodomy NOW, it doesn’t really help to think “well maybe in a few years or even tomorrow I’ll get married.”

And the statement is based on the false premise that if one is married, one can satisfy one’s sexual urges and needs completely at any time one wishes. (e.g. one’s spouse may be absent or sick for years).

The Hebrew word “to’evah,” meaning “abomination,” is used in the sense of being forbidden to engage in customs and modes of living similar to those practiced by pagan culture. Therefore, although female homosexuality is not explicitly forbidden according to Torah (Written Law), it is forbidden by Torah (Orthodox) Judaism because it is regarded as a pagan practice. Torah Judaism interprets such homosexual behavior as contrary to halakhah, Jewish law, involving how to conduct one’s life with respect to one’s own dignity, the dignity of others–including individual people and the larger social community, as well as animals–and one’s relationship with G-d. Homosexual behavior violates living a morally constructive life in this respect. Reform Judaism, on the other hand, interprets homosexual behavior as it is understood today, namely (potentially) more of a loving relationship than a pagan rite, and thus Reform Judaism believes that NOT allowing same-sex committed relationships is a violation of halakhah (Jewish law).

My apologies to the OP. You DID say that the act was disgusting and not the actor.

Thank you—there are many wonderful posts here and they are so great to read.
I love our Church and all of the members of Her body. Wow! So much love and wisdom!

Happy New Year all.

Cindy

You could say the latter about any form of habitual sin.
But we rarely do, do we? How often do you see this kind of language used about any sexual sin other than homosexuality? The only time you ever see it is on threads like this when people are trying to equivocate their feelings about homosexuality. The words get thrown out about homosexuals, and then somewhere around page 2 we get to someone (often the OP) who says “oh, and all those other sexual sins are bad too”.

Homosexuality is THE sin that everyone wants to rail against these days. My pastor’s theory is that it’s a sin that less than 10% of the population will ever struggle with, so it’s easy for them to condemn. People are always looking for someone to be a worse sinner than they are, it’s a human response that starts when we’re kids “but MOM, look what HE did!!!”. So, we continue to find a sin that we have no chance of ever committing and make it the worst sin ever, so that we look better by comparison. He did a whole homily on how we find other sins to point at so we don’t look at our own. You could have heard a pin drop in that church.

That is an excellent analysis. It is similar to what I used to hear when I was a kid “well, at least I am not as bad as Hitler.” No matter what I did, it wasn’t as bad as Hitler. And you are absolutely correct!
ALL sin is sin, and chastity is what we ALL need to strive for.
Thank you very much for sharing that. I will pray on that one for you have hit a strong chord of truth that I have never thought about.

Thank you for a very thought-provoking post.

In regard to the OP, I question why he uses the combative language that he did. Would he use the same language if speaking face to face with a gay person?

Well that’s fascinating for people like me who are interested in etymology. But for normal discussion let’s just use words in the meaning that they have in modern English. An abomination is something evil that must be rejected.
