Scripture is clear that God wishes us to share eternal life with him, to partake in that life. That’s the whole point of the cross. Christ shares in our humanity that we might share in eternal life.*Infinite *value? Not to belabor the point, but what part of the Bible tells us that?
I know we can infer that Christ dying on the Cross to atone for the sins of Man is an act of infinite love, but that is because of the infinity of God himself, not because of our value. His heart is overflowing with love, but we are not infinitely valuable. He is the only infinite in the equation of love here. We totally don’t deserve the redemption he offers us. That is why it is gratuitous. It is totally undeserved. If we were of infinite value and dignity, one could infer that we do deserve Christ’s redemptive act.
The end goal in my exchange with you is to affirm the dogma of Original Sin and our humility before an all-loving, almighty God who, through no merit of our own, came down to Earth and died for us. **That act of utter humility (the Incarnation) demands a respect. ** At the altar rail, your external posture informs and guides your intellect to adopt a humble stance before Our Lord in the simply Host before us. It doesn’t guarantee it, but it should lead your mind to humble thoughts.
Do you believe that God is infinite? And that he wishes to share that life with us? Scripture tells us we are bought at a great price. What value would you put on that price exactly?
Blessed John Paul II said this in his encyclical letter, The Gospel of Life, n. 25.
St. Peter“The blood of Christ, while it reveals the grandeur of the Father’s love…shows howprecious man is in God’s eyes and how priceless the value of his life. Christ’s blood reveals to man that his greatness, and therefore his vocation, consists in the sincere gift of self.”
Again, I did not read Tim to say he believes we are the source of our own infinite value, which it seems is how you are interpreting what was said. This issue is about who we are in God’s eyes, not about who we are of our own efforts. Communion rails are not of the essence this holiness.“Realize that you were delivered…by Christ’s blood beyond all price: the blood of a spotless, unblemished lamb.” (1 Pt. 1:18a,19a)
