Why is Jesus never on the cross in a Protestant church?

I myself, don’t understand the reasoning for not having a corpus of Christ on the cross. It was his sacrificial death that saves us, and not a wooden cross.

That’s what the Church teaches. Rome has spoken, Case closed. 👍

Of course. I practice in an area where there are lots of Latino immigrants, mostly Catholic and lots are illiterate. Lots of them just do not understand much about religion, but they think they are good Catholics. What the heck, maybe they are!

I,too,live in an area that has thousands of Latino immigrants that are mostly Catholic. Most of them have a better understanding of the Faith and are closer to Jesus that you or I may ever be.

Sorry you feel the need to look down and come to conclusions about a specific race of people based on a narrow view.

Do you speak spanish? If so,then you should feel obligated to help these so called “illiterate” Latinos. Maybe God is asking you to reach out.

I do not look down on them at all. And they are no “so called illiterate” they are illiterate! Many are illiterate. That’s not a sin or a crime but it is unfortunate.

Lots of these people are illegal immigrants and they are very frightened of any authority. They are primitive. One woman today doesn’t even wear shoes! Her feet are just so horrible, and sad. But she is Catholic. Not the same as you perhaps, but she believes she is Catholic and I believe she is too. But she has a very primitive understanding.

My mission is not to educate about religion. I heal physically, that’s about all I can do.

You are very cruel and judgmental for a so called Christian.

Are you not, with your knowledge, morally responsible to inform these illiterate? Or at least to find out what they believe they are doing, and then to teach? Or are these unfortunate immigrants only good enough for such-terrible Catholicism, not Protestantism?

I am absolutely not in any way shape or form responsible for their spiritual education. Besides which, my time is very much taken up with their physical needs and many years ago I dedicated my life to that. I don’t want to change that mission and I reject the idea that I should compound my task with spiritual instruction. They have clergy available.

I think they should remain Catholic and worship as they see fit. You should do as you wish too.

Wow, Namesake - you seem to have a history in these forums of making claims based upon opinion, not fact. Just because someone doesn’t know how to read does not make less of a Christian or deny them accurate instruction in Christianity. The Catholic parish for whom I am a teacher has 9 Masses on Sundays, 7 of which are in Spanish. Does this mean that the people who attend the Spanish Masses are less educated? Certainly not, they are just able to more fully participate and worship in their native tongue.

With regard to graven images and the Crucifix:
The placement of the corpus upon the cross is a tool used to remind us of what Christ did for us. Has anyone here seen the Passion of Christ? Did anyone else weep and pray during the scourging or the crucifixion? A crucifix (and statuary, icons, etc) is very much the same thing. If praying in front of a crucifix is sinful, then so is praying in front of the movie screen or television during the Passion.

I never indicated that I think illiterate Catholics are less Christian and I do not deny them anything at all. My vocation isn’t religion. Why do you accuse me so?

This is one honest opinion! 😃

I’m sure there are a lot of different reasons why Protestant churches do not have the corpus on the cross. The two main ones I’ve heard are that they do not focus on Christ death; rather they focus on the Resurrection - and taking the scripture command of graven images to the extreme context.

The Church takes the entire Cross - from the carrying of it by Christ, to Him being nailed on it, being raised and hung, with Mary and John at the foot of the Cross, to the empty cross. We see the glory of the Resurrection in the depiction of the Empty Tomb, and Christ’s appearance to the twelve in the upper room. All of it should symbolize to all Christians His necessary sacrifice for our salvation.

Your knowledge of Protestantism seems to be very limited. The Anglican church has the Crucifix in its sanctuaries.
 
It’s amazing how catholics scream about protestants making unfounded assumptions about their religion but they turn around and do the EXACT same thing. 🤷

There are protestant churches that hang the crucifix in their sanctuaries.

Actually, i am catholic and i have a bare wooden cross hanging over my front door, we adore all types of crosses. In fact, most people in my family have a “cross colage” on a wall in there home. It is very pretty too!
 
Protestants tend to be minimalists,aesthetically and theologically. 😉
Works are not necessary for salvation…so the teaching example of Christ’s work on the cross need not be emphasized.
 
my question to you is, have you not read the book of James? “Faith without Works is dead”
 
usually the claim is that Christ is risen, therefore the empty cross somehow signifies this.

My take is, Christ didn’t rise from the cross, He died on it and His mother and John and others took him off of it and buried him. He rose from the tomb.

I always say to those who take the risen view of it…

“you should have a piece of art showing the empty tomb, rather than the empty cross.”

then it would be factual…

John 12:32-33 says that Christ would draw all men unto himself through his being lifted up from this earth, the way in which he would die. the crucifixion. If the world can’t see it, then how can they be drawn to it?
 
Yes, good point.

I think any type of cross that is honored is a good thing.🙂
I just recently found out that the “Crucifix” is frowned upon by other religons. I was dumb founded for a lil while.😃
