Why is the US Catholic church so obsessed with the gay issue?

And you are back blindly following orders without looking at the whole spectrum of human knowledge.
I am having a hard time determining whether you are a universalist(everyone goes to heaven) of a Gnostic(salvation through knowledge)

Again nothing abnormal about homosexuality.
In the same way that there is nothing abnormal about blindness or paralysis.

Homosexuality is a disorder that hinders a person from a ‘normal’ use of his/her reproductive system in the same way that blindness hinders a person’s sight and paralysis hinders a person’s mobility. That is what I mean by abnormal.

And being left handed hinders a person from the “normal” use of their right hand. So is being left handed a disorder?

No, because left-handedness doesn’t affect an entire aspect of the body’s functioning. Being blind keeps a person from seeing.

And what does being gay keep a person from doing?
It keeps one from:
  1. natural human reproduction.
  2. being ordained as a Catholic priest
  3. a normal healthy life
But…

It certainly does not prevent one from gripeing and bad-mouthing the Catholic Church simply because the Church’s teachings do not conform with abnormal sexual behavior.

A Church of men is a Church of men therefore can be in error. You have your truth and I have mine.
First of all, I see that you are a “Trial Member” or a newbie here. Let me welcome you to the forum.

That being said let’s get something straight.

There is no such thing as “your truth” or “my truth”. There is simply THE TRUTH.
If you believe that “your truth” is THE truth then you are living in a “dictatorship of relativism" and you essentially deny truth.

If you acknowledge that truth exists, then we can discuss and even argue about whether or not I or the Catholic Church correctly understands the truth of this matter. But if you deny that there is such a thing as truth, that is, the truth, not just my truth and your truth, then the matter becomes merely an exercise of raw political power in terms of who has more votes to impose an agenda, and that is what makes it ultimately tyrannical.

Ummm…yea no the Church is a Church of men. Always has been and always will be. If we can’t agree with then you must not study the history of the Church. My truth comes from reason, science, faith, history, and general knowledge. I do not blindly accept what is told to me and I use my own reason and ability to learn in order to discern truth.
Interesting…

I accept as a matter of faith that the Catholic Church is the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church founded by Jesus Christ. I accept this rationally and logically. I have inspected each doctrine and found it perfectly internally consistent. I acknowledge as a matter of intellectual honesty that the Church is led by very intelligent philosophers who are never going to allow any deviation from this perfect consistency.

I wasn’t aware that the blind are forbidden from heaven. Homosexuality does not prevent people from living happy normal lives…that would be homophobia and bigotry that prevents homosexual people from living happy normal lives(sometimes).

I believe homosexual human beings are not living sin by living out who they are. That is The truth! 🙂

See it is that type of language and passive aggressive behavior that gets us nowhere. Number 1, you don’t know my sexual orientation and number 2 I am not bad mouthing the Church for sake of bad mouthing the Church. Regardless of what you believe it is my Church as well.

Both have great ideas but alas I am Roman Catholic. I was baptized, confirmed, and at one point even considered the priesthood. Currently, I have been worshipping at an Episcopalian Catholic Church but I still consider myself in communion with Rome. I don’t believe all of knowledge can be derived from just two sources, the bible and tradition. Instead, I believe believe reason and science should also be considered. There are many things in the hard sciences but especially the social sciences that the Church fathers had no knowledge about. That is ok and there is nothing wrong with that. God blessed us with wonderful brains in order to question and keep searching. I do believe that not everyone goes to be with the Lord but I believe that is more of a choice. I can go on about my beliefs but I won’t bore you with the details.

I think you are confusing the laws of living a chaste life by single people vs. people who are homosexually oriented.
All single people are called to live a chaste live, regardless of who they are attracted to. They are all children of God and have immense dignity.

You’re talking about sex.
Some people believe it’s the only reason to live. 🤷

The church believes in a properly ordered, and open to life sexual intimacy that is unitive.
Gay people can certainly love someone. Love them deeply. They may not have sex with them. Neither can underage persons, priests, etc.

If I may ask…have you been told by someone that Catholics hate gays or someone who felt that gay people are somehow “less” because of their orientation?

Or is this just about sexual activity?

How can you be in communion with Rome when you reject core moral teachings of the Church? In fact why would you want to be in Communion with a Church that you consider to be a Church that has gotten so much so wrong over the last 2000 years?

Do you think the Church, which brings us the Bible, is incapable of interpreting it? Seriously? It would appear that, in answer to my question, you are left with no foundation for your faith.
“Recovering Catholic” generally denotes someone who has left the Catholic church and often is attending no church at all. Or the Episcopal “Church” USA, which pretty much amounts to the same thing anymore.

TEC, right?

This is a very rude post. I currently am attending a Catholic Episcopal Church but still am in communion with Rome. I also attend Roman Catholic services and I find that the Episcopal parish is much more welcoming and community orientated as compared to the Roman Church I attend. It is this attitude that is killing the faith in many.

Perhaps believers in the sacramental nature of true marriage should simply stop using the word “marriage” at all. There is holy matrimony, and there is

I am fully aware of the teaching which is better than other Churches…at least the Catholic Church realizes that orientation isn’t a choice and not a sin. I am talking about both. Yes, in the Catholic world you can be gay as long as you never act on your love for someone. That, in my opinion, is wrong.

And-- let me guess-- you receive the Eucharist in both because your invented theology (e.g. God “changes his mind”) tells you it’s okay, right?
