John the Baptist tells of a Baptism of Fire.

JustAsking, you should know where this is…

So cleansing of the soul with fire has been done and will be done again…

“I indeed baptize you with water,…but he that cometh after me…shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire” (Matt. 3:11).
good point… Thanks, even htough i don’t think it will do much good. J-asking is kind of… sold out to Protestantism…:sad_bye:

Oh , you’re damn good !! But to be honest ,

But even this witness can overreact or even lie !!

Go to Mass every day for 3 yrs… you will hear the entire Bible (the Word of God)…

Then come back and tell me that it is NOT the word of God… Until then, i am not listening… (to that aspect of your comments… those that have to do with a religion you do not understand…)

Here is what the New American Bible (A Catholic Bible) says about this verse in its footnotes:
[11] Baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire: the water baptism of John will be followed by an “immersion” of the repentant in the cleansing power of the Spirit of God, and of the unrepentant in the destroying power of God’s judgment. However, some see the holy Spirit and fire as synonymous, and the effect of this “baptism” as either purification or destruction. See the note on Luke 3:16

Here is what it says about the verse in Luke 3:16:
[16] He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire: in contrast to John’s baptism with water, Jesus is said to baptize with the holy Spirit and with fire. From the point of view of the early Christian community, the Spirit and fire must have been understood in the light of the fire symbolism of the pouring out of the Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4); but as part of John’s preaching, the Spirit and fire should be related to their purifying and refining characteristics (Ezekiel 36:25-27; Malachi 3:2-3). See the note on Matthew 3:11.

As you can see by these Catholic scholars it has nothing to do with purgatory.

Do not forget that Hell is not the only thing associated with fire in the Bible. God is also associated with fire. He is referred to as “a consuming fire” in Deut. He is referred to as “the God who answers by fire” in I Kings. And who can forget God in the burning bush?

true

If its not then its not about purgatory since this passage is said to be about purgatory which happens after you die. Correct?
Hey, justasking…

Aren’t you going to repond to my post… about the MAN who goes through fire (to be saved)??

Hmmm… Why am i not surprised… ??

Au contraire, I think you’ve answered your own dilemma with purgatory my friend. It is meant to be a “cleansing” as is the “purifying and refining characteristics” as you so well explained youself.

God’s fire being a different property than what you know as earthly fire, is all purifying. Hense Purgatory.

hey… before i forget… How do you get that little quotation thing at the end of every one of your posts??

Concerning what you say about God being a consuming fire:

I am really glad you brought this up. I haven’t eaten in a long time and my blood sugar is plummeting by the minute so i can’t think straight … which is why i didn’t think of this passage…

So, i am glad someone around here eats… 😃

Yes, God is a consuming fire… and that is ahwt Purgatory is… a consuming fire… lit by the wrath of God - against sin… (NOT against sinners, but against their SINS… which disfigure their souls…)

As Jesus once told a saint he took to Purgatoyr with him… “My mercy does not want ths but Justice reuqires it…”

JustAsking:

You should try cutting and pasting what proves your theory, not ours.

It works better for you that way.
