Part of it, in the US at least, is that death and killing are the most often highlighted news stories, plus the recent addition of scandals involving celebrities and political figures. These elements are purposely chosen to draw in the most readers and to condition them to think on this more than they should in my view. Selling news has become as important as reporting it. This sort of tabloid journalism shows a profound lack of balance.
We need stories about positive developments, positive events, worthwhile inventions and discoveries that inspire us. And people in wealthier countries have taken more time to engage in electronic living as opposed to actual living. This lack of face to face interaction is not a good thing.
