I wonder if the reason why Protestants do not recite the rosary, is because it reminds them of Buddhism?
I’m friendly with a number of Buddhists, and they have a string of beads called mala beads, on which they say prayers. They even hold their hands as Christians do when they pray and show reverence (folded hands while praying is an ancient pagan custom.)

Tibetan Buddhists use a string of 108 beads, and they recite prayers using them (the beads help them keep track of how many prayers they have said.) I’ve also heard some Buddhists refer to them as “rosaries” (probably so non-Buddhists will more easily grasp what they are for.)

Prayer beads exist in Islam, Baha’i, Hinduism, and Sikhism, too.
It is just an ancient, pre-printing press method of organizing prayers. Protestants don’t have them only because they came into existence around the same time as the printing press.

I just wanted to ask about this statement. I am not sure if this was intentional so I don’t want to take it that way but wouldn’t Christ be central to the Catholic Church and not Mary? Though Mary is Christ’s mother she is still a supporting character in Chrisitanity. Isn’t Christ the center?

Which is why Christ says ‘This, then, is how you should pray’ in Matthew 6. He doesn’t say ‘This, then, is WHAT you shoud pray’ but HOW. He also says to pray to God this way. No mention of any other that should receive prayers. Since there is no evidence that Christ prayed to anyone but His Heavenly Father I try to be like Him and pray to God.

Well, we know from the Transfiguration in Luke 9:28-36, that Jesus and the Apostles went up on a mountain to pray. While Jesus was* praying*, Moses and Elijah appeared, talking with Jesus. How do you interpret that? Was he praying or not when Moses and Elijah appeared and began conversing with Him? Luke specifically calls it “praying” when this event occurs and states the purpose of the trip was to pray. I’m curious as to your take on these passages.Since there is no evidence that Christ prayed to anyone but His Heavenly Father I try to be like Him and pray to God.

Saying that Christ is central but Mary not is like you saying your husband is central in your life but your children are not. For a normal wife and mother BOTH husband and children are absolutely central, and it doesn’t take anything away from her love of either husband or children to say so. Indeed there’d be something wrong with her if she loved her husband but didn’t equally love the children that are so much a part of him.I just wanted to ask about this statement. Same with Christ and Mary - there’s nothing lacking in your love for Christ if you say that Mary is also central in your life. And Mary is such an important part of Christ’s life - there’s no-one else who was literally there every step of His human existence with Him, from the Annunciation to the Ascension - that if you truly want to imitate Him you’ll make her an equally important part of yours.
See love isn’t like a pie where there’s a limited amount and a big piece for one person means a smaller piece for others, it’s like a muscle that grows and expands in all directions when you exercise it in any way. That’s why Jesus said love of neighbour was like love of God. :yup:
As for praying to God - Jesus requested the Apostles to pray, did He not? “When you pray” and all that? ‘Pray’ means ‘ask’ - so if Our Lord asked them to pray then He did indeed pray to them, and so can you if you want to follow His example.

The rosary is our thing…the item and the prayer it represents. It is Catholic. Protestants and other non-Catholic Christians don’t have the same relationship with the Blessed Mother that we do. To us, Mary is OUR mother too. To them, she was the vessel used for Christ’s birth. I feel very priviledged to share the relationship that Christ had with his mother. She’s not God, no, and we all know that. But who could be a better role model for anyone who wants to know and love Jesus than His own mother? I pray to her to help me deal with my own family problems. St. Monica is right up there for me too, because my sons are not the people they could be and I ask her to guide me and intercede for them that they open their eyes and hearts to Our Lord, just as her son did. In addition to the rosary, I say the Chaplet of Divine Mercy every day on the way home from work, for my sons and all of our adult children who need to turn their lives around.
Maybe we could introduce other Christians to the Chaplet. That might fit their prayer traditions better than the rosary, and they could understand what those “repetitious” prayers do for us.

There is only one prayer on it and it is said over and over until completed at the end of the Prayer Rope. The Prayer is called the Jesus Prayer.

Very interesting. There’s a picture of one, and some links to how you can make one. I like the Jesus prayer. It’s something you could just say off and on all day, as time and activities allow.

It’s different, and perhaps easier. I wouldn’t say better. After 50 some years of saying the rosary, it’s pretty easy. I’m planning to stick to my rosary and chaplet, and maybe I’ll remember to say the Jesus prayer a few times each day. It couldn’t hurt!
