Why would a straight person leave the Catholic Church over our teaching on gay marriage?

If they’re so far gone that they don’t see the need, in general, for more children to be born on the Earth, there’s not much anyone can tell them.

Why do you find it curious? Many people value their sex lives/pleasure over religion and dislike rules that may interfere with that. Its the selfishness that comes with human nature.

Edit-oh I see you were being facetious.

There are many straight people who are pro gay “marriage.” These people are well meaning. They want gay people to have the same rights as straight people. They may or may not realize that there’s no such thing as “gay marriage.” What they do see is that there’s an injustice being made in regard to gay people. And it conflicts with what they’ve always been taught about loving everyone the same as God loves them.

What these well meaning people don’t see is that it’s okay to love the person. But it isn’t okay to love the sin. As Catholics, as Christians, we can’t and we mustn’t condone sin. So if the pro gay “marriage” person is Catholic, there’s the possibility that he or she will leave as a rejection of the perceived injustice (ie: the Church not condoning gay “marriage”).

What the bible actually says: Romans: 24-32

“Therefore, God handed them over to impurity through the lusts of their hearts[o] for the mutual degradation of their bodies. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions. Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural, 27 and the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is improper. 29 They are filled with every form of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, rivalry, treachery, and spite. They are gossips 30 and scandalmongers and they hate God. They are insolent, haughty, boastful, ingenious in their wickedness, and rebellious toward their parents. 31 They are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know the just decree of God that all who practice such things deserve death, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.”
Some Catholics implying that this passage in Scripture applies to most gay men today might be one reason that people are leaving the Church. I’m a gay man but don’t think that my being the way that I am is because I’m “filled with every form of wickedness, evil, greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, rivalry, treachery, and spite” and am “senseless, faithless, heartless, [and] ruthless”.

I wouldn’t say that. I’d say they think that there are enough children being born from people who want to have heterosexual sex and have kids from it, but that that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t have sexual relationships unless they want kids.

But Thorolfr, are you a gossip? That would seal the death sentence, don’t you think?

Seriously tho, I don’t mean to make light of this. Paul went to extremes, as he was proned to do. It’s difficult, as a Christian in the 21st century, to know how to read these passages. We have learned a lot in 2100 years, about homosexuality and gender roles and all sorts of other things, and the Holy Spirit has guided us into a new way of loving God and each other. No more death sentences for our gay brothers and sisters, ok?

In my own lifetime, the world’s population has doubled and it’s becoming kind of crowded where I live. If 5% of the population doesn’t have any children, I doubt that the human race is going to die out.

Because they want to be down with the gay thing. It’s the modern social cause and they want to seem progressive and socially inclusive.
Or maybe they truly believe the Church is in error on this one.

Your post suggests you know the hearts, minds, and souls of those who genuinely can’t swallow what the Church teaches on this topic. You don’t. I would suggest being careful with that.

Death sentences?
Yes, death sentences. Paul calls for the death of those who practice homosexuality, at least those Christians in Rome. We don’t know if he meant all homosexuals, since his letter was addressed to the Romans specifically. However, if you are going to use this text to implicate all homosexuals in all times and places, you have to take his call to put them to death. Right?

Which verse specifically?
Romans 1: 32

They know God’s decree, that those who practice such things deserve to die…

Paul was undoubtedly citing Halachah, Jewish Law.

If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them. Leviticus 20:13
