Do not worry you are not alone Diana, there are plenty of people who don’t know the theological reasons behind practices such as no meat on Fridays of Lent, including Catholics. Because of our disobedience we must give penance in the face of Gods Justice. Part of that penance can be accomplished through fasting and abstinence. It is some thing we can physically do to help us draw closer to God, something God wants. Here is a link to an article that traces the history of ecclesiastical legislation regarding the law of abstinence, as well as examines the motives which underlie the legislation.Thanks for the information; I didn’t know those details. Is this a part of the Tradition, sort of? Those practices and teachings that grow?
